1962 THE SWORD PUBLISHED BY YEARBOOK STAFF ORLEANS HIGH SCHOOL ORLEANS, VERMONT . . . This year the class of 1962 has tried a completely new idea in yearbook organization. The first section pictures the students in their every day work, the different organizations and sports participated in. From the underclassmen section we reach our climax with the Seniors and their four years as a class. We have tried to show our world and life at OHS as we have seen it . . . If you can face the future with faith in yourself and faith in your fellow men, then many doors will open unto you. Best wishes for a happy and successful future. W. Few, if any of us, remember the Jones family, yet we can be proud of our library which was made possible through their generosity. Its facilities are there for all. The Jones family can be traced back to 1813. Hubbard Joslyn, who was a well-known manufacturer of churns and spade harrows in Brownington, was the largest estate owner in Orleans County. Mr. Joslyn was the uncle of Charles and Anna Jones, who were long-time residents of Barton Landing, now Orleans. Mr. Jones and Miss Jones left money for the above pictured library with a trust fund which helps maintain it. Portraits of Charles and Anna Jones hang in the library as a memorial. Even though for some of us formal education may end upon graduation from high school, we can still continue to appreciate this facility. Debating in Sophomore English Diagraming in English Languages French class touring France Latin class in Action 6 Business Education In Business Education we have done things we never thought we could accomplish. For example, in typing we never thought we could master the skill of the keys. Then in Shorthand, it was a new and interesting subject at first, but as time went on it became more difficult and more like learning a new language. In bookkeeping, those financial statements, ledgers, and journals, all fitted into the picture when we were “bookkeepers” for the Randall Wholesale Grocery Company. In Office Practice, we learned much about the proper methods of filing, and the “know how” of operating many different office machines. A student may begin training when he or she is a Freshman and continue that training until graduation. Business Education diplomas will not be granted to students if their four-year average in business subjects as well as general average is less than “C.” Upon graduation a student who has studied and worked to- wards a goal is qualified to go on to further his education or to a good position. Carmen Lorraine Shorthand II dictation is fun Dale balancing the ledger Homemaking Studying family needs Family members must study their needs in a home to determine whether the space they have gives them the satisfaction they desire at a price they can afford. There’s lots to learn about food! Good food for all the family is one of the homemaker’s major responsibilities. Teen- agers should get acquainted with the daily food problems and learn how they can do their share. Can you stitch a straight seam? Every girl likes pretty clothes and plenty of them. The girl who can sew can have more clothes for the same amount of money which she would otherwise spend for ready made garments plus the satis- faction of an interesting hobby. 9 “Prof” directs the testing of milk for mastitis. Agriculture Mr. Harold Clark from the State Department of Agriculture assist the boys in judging milk for flavor in preparation for the Barrc Milk Judging Contest. Members of the Freshman class learning to test milk for butter fat. Guidance All Freshmen are required to take guidance. Each group meets twice a week with Mr. Stacy. Pictured a' the right, several students are engaged in gather- ing material regarding possible future occupations. 10 U. S. History We find where the Civil War started. Joan shows Sherri where it happened. Economics Economics is an elective sub- ject. Here Jimmy Labor is giv- ing an oral report on a current economic problem while class looks on with interest. Physical Education Every student at OHS is re- quired to take at least two years of Physical Education. At left, Mr. Jarvis is explaining basketball techniques to a group of Freshman boys. 11 DIRECTOR: Bernard Matthews TROMBONES Marie Cleveland Jean Leslie Jack Dudley Steve Kipp Brent Marcottc Milton Todd TRUMPETS Jimmy Choiniere Linda Swanson Linda Rice Eugene Childers Brian Labor Rusty Marcotte Leon Mason SAXOPHONES Leslie Dudley Linda Young Jimmy Labor Judy Kennison Debbie Gage Barry Barton Gary Marcotte DRUMS Jim Alexander Bobby Ciechanowicz Richard Clark Harry Niles Rene Demands Roy Perkins CLARINETS Mona Roberts Muria Roberts Sherri Hemenwav Steve Matthews Betsy Dudley Diane Stearns Judy Lavoie Benita Leno Jean Ciechanowicz CYMBOLS Murielle Harbec GLOCKENSPIEL Margaret Davis BARITONE DRUM MAJOR John Blanchard Richard Hommell Majorettes: Jane Mary Janice Betty Jean o. hL S, Band Glee Club The Glee Club presented a Christinas Concert and took part in the Minstrel Show in April. ACTIVITIES To the Faculty: Now a museum of historical and pioneer articles, this stone structure once served as a dormitory, library and classroom. In 1829, the Rev. Alexander L. Twilight came, fresh from Middlebury College, to sene as principal ol Brownington Academy. Under his leadership the school outgrew the limited accommodations of the little pioneer village, and he proposed the erection of this building, which he called Athenian Hall. He soon met indifference and even opposition. He persevered and managed to erect, practically unaided, the building pictured above. The Rev. Twilight’s story shows how determination and foresight, channeled in the right direction can influence others. We realize that the interest shown in us today by our teachers often influences out futute anil will probably be better appreciated as years go by. 15 Science Club OFFICERS President E. The consistent high scores of our con- testants won us the trophy for the second time. Carmen Davis, pictured at the left, was presented a Royal portable typewriter by the Caledonia Typewriter Company for re- ceiving the highest score in the Typing I division. On June 6, the newly elected officers of the Orleans FBLA chapter were properly installed by the Colebrook FBLA chapter. This installation was held at Island Pond preceding the presentation of awards. Activities this year included clerical work which was done voluntarily for charity organizations and the making of favors which were given to patients in the hospitals and local nursing homes. Several interesting meetings were held during the year with outside speakers. The annual sugaring-off party was held at Arland Butler’s sugar place and greatly enjoyed by all. In September, a cook-out was held at Pageant Park with FBLA alumni and parents as guests. FBLA Officers President ......... Lorraine Beauregard Vice President ............ We spent six happy, carefree years in graded school. At first there was Carmen, Janice,' Muria, Mona, Leslie, Hale, and Dale. Later we were joined by Phyllis, Jane, Barbara, Jimmy, and Eugene. In 1956 we entered junior high with Mrs. Leslie and Mr. Dolgin. This year we chose cheerleaders and had a basketball team. Our activities included class trips to the White Mountains, Legislature in Montpelier, and Burlington. We also had several parties and dances. A new classmate, Milton, joined us in the seventh grade. The climax of our junior high years was our eighth grade gradua- tion exercises and banquet. When we entered the halls of O.H.S. in September 1958, we were obviously no more than inexperienced Freshmen. Our initiation was one which will always be remembered as nothing short of 50 Burlington Class Trip. Orleans Sixth Grade. Junior Prom Candidates for king and queen. “organized confusion.” Mr. Whitaker and Mr. Barton had the task of guiding us through our first year. Our Sophomore year started out with us getting re- venge bv initiating the Freshmen. We purchased a banner and presented it to the band. Towards the end of the year we had a field day. Eugene was elected president of our class and has served us faithfully since then. Mrs. Hayford and Mrs. Houghaboom were our sponsors. In 1960 we began our Junior year with Mrs. Houghaboom and Mr. Barton as our sponsors. Our first project of the year was the Sadie Hawkins dance. Our big project, falling in June, was the Junior Prom. Hawaiian Cruise was our theme, and the hall was beautifully decorated to look like an approach to the island. Judy Kennison and Tommy Emmerson were chosen King and Queen. Finally, we have entered into our senior year at O.H.S. In November we sponsored a very successful “Turkey Supper.” We look back on these four years with a feeling of pride and accomplishment. At this time we are looking forward to the highlight of our school career; graduation. It will be a proud and re- warding moment for each of us. We would like to give a special thanks to Mrs. England and Mr. Stacy for the help they have given us this year. by Mona, Muria, and Janice Graduation — Coventry Eighth Grade. 51 Graduation Irasburg Eighth Grade ADVERTISEMENTS To our Advertisers: Today, industry plays a very important part in the lives of all, young and old, rich or poor. Orleans is fortunate indeed for its businesses which offer employment to many. The following pages will serve as a silent reminder of the support so willingly given by businessmen and women in this vicinity and the faith they have in the young people of today- Let us ever remember our heritage as we continue to grow in all four areas — Mental, Social.
