Gonyaw, S. Hemenway, and S. Emmerson attended. Seven schools were represented. National Merit Exams were given in six business subjects; namely, Shorthand I II, Typing I II, Bookkeeping, and Office Practice. Eight of the ten O. H. She was awarded the typewriter pre- sented by the Caledonia Typewriter Company. In April, we participated in the Fifth Annual Business Get-Together held in Pittsburgh, New Hampshire. This year we have joined FBLA. The Future Busi- ness Leaders of America is an organization for stud- ents who are enrolled in business subjects. FBLA is designed particularly for those students who are look- ing forward to a career in business. One of its chief objectives is to develop strong, aggressive leadership so that these strong businessmen and women may participate more efficiently in the business and com- munity life of which they are a part. Some of the activities of this group are: to prepare and publish, “The Hourglass”, the school paper, do volunteer clerical work for charity organizations, and visit dif- ferent business organizations in the community. Two special outings of the year were: Mr. and Mrs. Arland Butler’s invitation to their sugar place for a real-old-fashioned sugar party, and a cook out at Pageant Park, which was enjoyed by 34 members. Our October meeting climaxed our United Nations program with Anne Champagne from Germany as our speaker. Special programs for the year include: Arm- istice, demonstration on gift wrapping with Edith Gray, sleigh ride, making favors for nursing homes, cake decorating, and Alumnae. Our annual Mother and Daughter Banquet brought the FHA year to a close. These programs were helpful in making our year interesting as well as enlightening. The chapter was pleased to receive $70 from the Sears Roebuck Foundation for a consumer buying and clothing construction program which in turn will be used to help our adopted family. We would like to thank Mr. Mrs. Germaine Choiniere and Mr. Mrs. Ronald Hilliker for being faithful chapter parents. Row 1: C. Young. P. Robinson. B. Blake. P. Hilliker. R. Boivin, E. Hunt. L. He went on to win first at the Tri-State speaking contest held at the University of Maine and placed second at the North Atlantic reg- ional contest held in connection with the Eastern States Exposition. At the fall district meeting, the officers, pictured below, won the Chapter Meeting contest. Last year, we won seven out of eight events on the district level. Again, the selling of Eastern States Seeds was our principal source of income for the chapter. Richard Jensen was our high salesman last year. Some of the moments to remember from this year were: Parents’ Night Meeting, Sugar Party with the F.H.A. Girls, Winter Carnival, and the F.F.A. District Dance. The year was 1949 when our hearts were gay and innocent. In the second grade, Mrs. Hardie started the task of teaching us arithmetic. The third grade with Mrs. Davis was the year we sat out our punishments on the floor. The climax of this year was our Dutch party. Mrs. Stearns succeeded in teaching us the rest of the multiplication tables. Mr. Cook taught us a very pleasant instrument to play . . . the tonette. In the fifth grade, Miss Taylor tried to shake frac- tions into us. Sue joined us that year and there was Lyncitc, Carol, and Viola—Bashful! a mad scramble, by the boys, to exterminate her pigtails. The sixth grade with Miss Rogers brings us pleas- ant memories. Activities, such as the patrol, minstrel show, class meetings, and softball, helped make this year interesting. In the seventh grade, we journeyed to the high school building with Mrs. Leslie. Darrell joined our crew that year. The girls also got a chance to try their skill at cheerleading. In the eighth grade with Mr. Dolgin, we struggled to learn Vermont history. We had a successful year in basketball. We journeyed to Montpelier, and also to Granby Zoo to see the monkeys. 44 Our first day in high school seemed to us like a national holiday. This memorable day had long been waited for. Freshmen initiation was the first high- light of our year when Lynda Metcalf had to do the Charleston in a grain bag with Wayne Rice. The ex- citing party given to the girls by Mr. Yandow for rais- ing the most money for the class in a boys versus girls contest was not quickly forgotten. As Sophomores, we gained the privilege of initiat- ing the Freshmen. Our paper drive, scrap-iron drive, and food sales were only a few reasons for the rise in our class treasury. Mrs. Houghaboom and Mrs. Hay- ford were our sponsors this year. Junior Prom and the Sadie Hawkins Dance helped make this year prosperous. Our Junior Prom theme was “Sweethearts on Parade” which portrayed count- less red and white miniature stars dangling from the ceiling. Hearts and roses were scattered everywhere. Terry Decker, Alden Hilliker, Danny Young, and Judy Cummings were chosen to attend Boys’ and Girls’ State. Mrs. White and Mr. Leslie were on hand to help us through this prosperous year. Our Senior year was perhaps the most picturesque of all four. Mrs. England and Mr. Stacy were with us this year. Alden Hilliker won the state public speaking contest and came in second in national. Looking back on these four wonderful years, we have many fond memories and lasting friendships that have surely left a memorable mark. Graduation was our fondest remembrance. It gave us a proud feel- ing to walk down the aisle as Orleans High School graduates of 1961.
