R Boone, whose friendliness and optimism have made him the individual most responsible for the growth and achievement of Orlando Senior High School. E To the Class of l95l: Perhaps it seemed like a long, long road ahead when you first registered at OHS. But we hope that now your travels through the halls of the old school have many pleasant memories. May these memories regale your future lives as you pass along through the many other hallways that you will naturally follow during your life. Friendships formed in high school are among the most lasting that we have. May you have formed many of these friendships to carry along throughout life and to lighten the pathways of memories. When times come for you to face the problems of life may the influences upon you while in high school prove to be always a steadying force. May you feel that you have benefited by your associations, the social knowledge las well as book learningl, and the cultural opportunities offered by the high school. And finally, may you all graduate from high school with a desire to be good American citizens. LZQLWKL- . Qualifying after a series of pr a c t i c e congresses throughout the state, these Senators and Representa- tives were chosen to repre- sent OHS at the Tallahassee State Student Congress. The sessions were held in the capitol building, where the congressmen debated bills introduced by the participat- ing schools. At Tallahassee the title of Best Speaker ot the Senate came to Larry Sands. Since OHS students had received the award for the two previous years, with Larry's win, the gold cup became the perma- nent property of the Orlando Chapter. Larry presents the cup to President McCree. 84 ATIU AL PURE SIE LEAE E The Orlando chapter of the National Forensic League is one of 500 that exist throughout the United States to encourage the study of debate, oratory, and public speaking. To obtain membership a candidate must first earn twenty credit points by radio broadcasting or by speaking before a high school assembly or an adult audience of at least twenty-five persons. ln October and November the chapter was kept busy with the Forensic League Follies and student congresses. A highlight of the year was the public initiation on January l9. At this time the chapter was honored with a visit from Mr. Bruno E. Jacob, the executive secretary of NFL, who presented the leading chapter of Florida award for I949. Ours is one of only four chapters in the United States which have received the coveted award twice! February found our debaters working very hard to take part in the tournaments at the University of Florida, and in May some of our NFL'ers traveled to the State NFL Tourna- ment at Miami. A year of activity was climaxed in April with the Southern Speech Association Tournament, again at Gainesville. 'kg X5 , r v i f Q i . SANFORD 7500 fans saw an unpolished Tiger eleven roll to an I8-0 victory over Sanford. Hudnall swept around right end for the first score. Foti and Stephens scored the other two in the last quarter. Shaeffer, Hyer, and Cason were outstanding on the Bengal defense. ORLANDO VS. ROBERT E. LEE The Lee powerhouse from Jacksonville proved to be too much for the boys from Orlando as they suffered an I8-6 defeat. Byron Eicher punched over our only touchdown in the last quarter on a line plunge. ORLANDO VS. PLANT The Tigers racked up their first Big Ten win by downing Plant of Tampa, l2-O. Eicher and Hudnall picked up a touchdown each, as they sparked Tiger offensive machine. Jim Hall and Fred Baetzman turned in stellar line play for the locals. ORLANDO VS. MIAMI JACKSON The Bengals fought to a heart-breaking loss at the hands of the Jackson Generals. Behind l3-0 at half time, the Tigers picked up two quick TD's. Foti car- ried the mail both times, after which Holcomb added both extra points. A fourth down gamble gave the Generals their touchdown, and the game ended 20-l4 in favor of Miami. ORLANDO VS. ST. PETERSBURG The Tigers ran out of steam late in the first quar- ter after driving for a touchdown in the first minutes of the game. Eicher took it over for the Bengals from the seven. After that it was Green Devils all the way. Final score: St. Pete 20, Orlando 7. ITY ORLANDO VS. HILLSBOROUGH The revamped Tigers upset the Terriers for their first victory over Hillsborough in nine years. Bur'- roughs romped 45 yards to set up the score. Holcomb's educated toe provided the winning margin after a Foti to Cason touchdown pass. The game ended 7-6 favor OHS. ORLANDO VS. WEST PALM BEACH Claude Hunter, a Junior track star, took a hand- off from Burroughs and raced the opening kickoff back 90 yards for a TD, but after that West Palm Beach took over the reins. OHS mustered a touchdown in the final quarter on a Foti to Cason pass. Final score: West Palm Beach I9, Orlando l4. ORLANDO VS. MIAMI BEACH The Typhoons swept the Tigers off their feet by a I3-7 margin. A Foti to Cason pass gave Orlando its only touchdown. ORLANDO VS. LAN DON The Tigers were the toast of the state after defeat- ing the powerful Landon Lions, I5-l3, in a stunning upset. Orlando's offense rolled up an amazing l57 yards from scrimmage, but the superior defensive line play was the decisive factor of the game. The winning margin came when Stumpy Thompsen, All Southern back, slipped down in his own end zone. ORLANDO VS. LAKELAND A chilly but happy crowd saw the Tigers end their season by trouncing their annual Thanksgiving Day rivals, 26-7. The Dreadnaughts lead at half time, 7-6, but the out-manned Lakeland eleven was swamped in the second half by the Tigers. Burroughs picked up two TD's for the victors, while Stephens and Cason picked up one each. !s.1 t ff N 7 W, i ,yy Q -. .if-fa 'N 13 S2 g Xb 1 FIRST ROW: Rogers, Weaver, Pitts, Barlow, Ingram, Huckel, Mims.
