Une hundred and thirty-four years later, on August Z I 943, Congress authorized construction of CV-34. The lzeel was laid May I, I 944, and the ship was launched on Gctober 13, 1945. With the Korean War at hand Orishany was commissioned into service on September 25, I 950. In the 23 years since commissioning, Orishany has made 14 major deployments: one to the Mediterranean and 13 to the Western Pacific. Eight ofthe Pacific deployments were to combat zones: one to Korea and seven to Vietnam. Orishany jets distinguished themselves in Korea when, on November I Z I 952, they engaged in what is believed to be the first multi-jet dogfight in naval history. Four Orishany F- 9F Pantherjets were pitted against seven Communist MIG-I5's. Two MIG 's were destroyed and a third was damaged. No Urishany jets were lost. Between Korea and Vietnam, Urisleany went into the movie business hosting William Holden and Michey Rooney in thefilming of THE BRIDGES AT TOK O-Rl MGM also cast her as the heroine of THE MEN OF THE FIGHTING LADY I 'nz ll 0. 4 . .Y .PJ .lc r IUIS. I Starting in October, 1956, Uriskany was molded into a striking new shape, complete with angled deck and streamlined hurricane bow. Steam- driven catapults capable of launching heavier aircraft were installed the combat information center was relocated to a more protected space, and the crew's berthing areas were modernized. In March, 1961, Uriskany became thefirst ship to be installed with the Navy Tactical Data System KNTDSQ. President John F. Kennedy visited the ship to observe the system at work. Tragedy struck Oriskany during her second combat deployment to Vietnam. At 7:28 a.m., Uctober 26, 1966, fire broke out in aforward magazine and raged through five decks. Many of the 43 men who died were combat pilots who hadflown raids over North Vietnam afew hours earlier. During her seventh cruise to Vietnam, CDR Denis R. Weichman made naval aviation history when he flew Oriskany's last combat mission over Vietnam on fanuary 27 1973. That mission was his 612th air mission over Vietnam-more than any other naval aviator. With the departure on Uctober 18, 1973, Oriskany embarked on her 14th deployment to the Western Pacific. It was to be a change ofpacefor the veteran carrier--herfirst peacetime cruise since 1 965. X I v K 1 XX. 'Xxx X 'X X , 1. 1 z A 4 x. X x awe .4?1'vq-'QQQ 15,12 1 ye ,. Hilton Communications Officer Communications Department personnel were the caretakers of the ship's various methods of signaling messages and information. A Z4-hour a day operation, Comm processed all incoming and outgoing general service messages and provided outlets for departments requiring voice or data communications. Comm was definitely a basic information center for the ship. Whether the latest football scores from home or the inevitable schedule change, Comm was the first to know. Responsible for the transmission, collection, and distribution of message traffic, Comm personnel were divided into three distinct organizations. CR Division handled all incoming and outgoing teletype message processing. CR radiomen also performed maintenance on teletype equipment belonging to all departments aboard the ship. CS Division provided visual communication services, utilizing such methods as flashing light, semaphore, and flag hoist. Signalmen were often called upon to provide additional service as visual lookout to obtain identification of other vessels. CC Division attended to the actual communication paths, except visual, for the ship. The radiomen maintained the ship's high frequency antennae and supplied frequencies for teletype, data, and voice communications. CR DIVISION Cl to rj First row: RM3 HE. MHCHIUSO, RM3 TJ. McNeely First Lieutenant Characteristic of their predecessors in naval history, the Deck Department boatswainmates exhibited a can-do attitude in the face of many thankless and tedious chores. Primary duties for the department included maintaining the ship's hull and sides, manning the 5-inch gun mounts, and conducting underway replenishments. Bos'nmates could be found chipping, painting, or scrubbing in a wide variety of areas about the ship. More knowledge of ship's operations and general seamanship was expected perhaps in the Deck Department than anywhere else on the ship. The responsibilities of the department's three divisions were divided in corelation with the three main sections of the ship. First Division, assigned the Alpha section of the ship, maintained the forecastle, the location of the ship's huge anchors and chain. The' cleanliness of the Quarterdeck, the ship's ceremonial deck, was also charged to First Division. The Captain's Gig was manned and maintained by personnel in this division. Second Division, owning the Bravo section of the ship, was responsible for raising and lowering of the ship's accomodation ladders. The port motor whale boat and its storage area were maintained by Second Division. Third Division was responsible for the ship's Charlie section and consequently for the fantail. The division also controlled the starboard boat. When the ship was in port, Third Division handled and dispatched assigned vehicles and they maintained the Afterbrow. Taylor, Jr. Chief Engineer The Engineering Department had only one responsibility-Ato keep Oriskany, the physical plant, functioning. That straight- forward chore kept hundreds of men working around the clock, Making steam to propel the ship and maintaining vital machinery and equipment. The term 'Asnipes characterized more than throttlemen standing for hours in the heat of Main Engine Control. Production, repair, and maintenance needed to keep the ship on top performance was delegated to Engineering's five divisions. A Division provided the necessary repairs and services that kept the ship's auxiliary equipment functioning. A Division operated the oxygen and nitrogen producing plants, provided steam to the catapults, maintained the aircraft elevator machinery, and repaired various ship's hardware through the machine shop. A much relied upon service of the division was the installation and repair of air conditioning units. B Division personnel were in the unenvied position of babysitters for Oriskany's eight oil-burning boilers. Boiler Thumpersu labored in a l20-plus degree environment, coaxing the boilers to provide enough steam to propel the ship and service other vital needs. B Division evaporator crews produced hundreds of thousands of gallons of water each day for use in boilers, galleys, heads, and fire-fighting equipment. E Division distributed the electrical energy necessary to provide the ship with light and the machinery with power to function. E Division's services also affected miscellaneous electrical equipment including shipls TV and radio sets, computers, steering system, and ventilation units. Sound-powered and telephonic communications were also a responsibility of the ship's electricians. And if that weren't enough, the Movie Booth selected and distributed Navy Motion Picture Exchange films. M Division operated the ship's four high-powered main engines, which provided the power to turn the screws. Machinist mates also converted steam from the boilers into electrical energy to be utilized throughout the ship. R Division personnel were jack-of-all-trade professionals. responsible for plumbing, carpeting, welding, and metal work. The division preserved the shipls material condition and watertight integrity, and provided the nucleus for fire-fighting and damage control parties. Daleke ., Navigator Navigator H ff? H Uv s,l- Departed 20 January 1974 Reported 6 January 1974 SP -e . The safety and efficiency of Oriskany as a vessel at sea was the task of the Navigation Department. Quartermasters constantly updated the ship's position and made recommendations on courses to steer to the Officer of the Deck. To accomplish their task, the quartermasters combined the traditional use of the sextant with the technology of electronic navigation. Whether at sea or in port, the Quartermaster of the Watch maintained a running account of both routine and special events significant to the history of the ship. The QMOW was also charged with knowledge of steering, ship's whistle, and navigational light operation. Sea and Anchor Details were most important evolutions, requiring the navigational skills of the quartermasters to maneuver the ship through hazardous waters. Ready to guide the ship anywhere on the globe, the Navigation Department maintained a library of charts of the world's oceans and sea. Anyone desiring to know the correct time needed merely to call the Chart Room, where the quartermasters maintained the ship's chronometers. At the head of the department, the Navigator trained both underway and inport watch teams on matters of seamanship and ceremonies. He also advised the Captain and Officer of the Deck during special evolutions such as Sea and Anchor Detail and underway replenishment. 4.5.17 1: -, e,.f.za,e.. X. Scott Weapons Officer The Weapon's Department provided for more than the firing of guns against an enemy. Weapons personnel worked long hours to maintain a ready supply of reliable ordnance to embarked aircraft. Providing a variety of weaponry from 20 millimeter cannon ammunition to 2,000 pound bombs, the red shirtsl' assembled and transported ordnance from magazines far below decks to the various weapons delivery systems. Four 5-inchf38- caliber gun mounts coupled with two fire control directors facilitated close-in defense of the ship. WA Division, Weapons Admin, acted as the administrative arm of the Gun Boss. G Division personnel assembled and moved conventional ordnance for delivery to the attack and fighter aircraft. Red shirts handled everything from flares, to gun pods, to iron bombs up G Division's bomb elevators from lower deck magazines to the loading area. Ordnancemen in the Bomb Assembly Areas attached fins and other essential parts to weapons on their way to the flight deck. GM Division received, stowed, tested, and issued sleek air- launched missiles. Radar-homing missiles and sophisticated guided bombs were stored in sanitary-like magazines and were assembled and tested with modern electronic machinery by men taking pride in maintaining professional standards. W Division personnel were constantly in training to maintain a high standard of technical expertise in weapons handling for delivery of safe, properly configured weapons to aircraft loading teams. The Explosive Drdnance Disposal CEODJ team directed the disposal of unexploded ordnance and trained personnel in explosive ordnance procedures. Every armed aircraft, launched or recovered, was observed by an expert trained to react if ordnance threatened lives. Fifth Division gunners maintained the ship's four five-inch guns. Nearly 600 rounds were fired from the guns in practice firings during the cruise? Fifth Division was also responsible for upkeep of magazines and the ship's armory. Every underway replenishment began with the firing of shot lines to the replenishment vessel by a gunner's mate from the armory. Fox Division, the fire control technicians, incorporated two fire control directors, a target designation system, and computers to locate targets beyond the range of eyesight and direct the ship's guns to bear on them. The Fox-manned directors provided accurate range data to aid the Navigator during replenishment and sea and anchor evolutions. ISIUN L' I. I5 I J. xItk'I1'2lI'X. INIIIIIIIX lx X. Richards, USMC Commanding Officer Oriskany's Marine Detachment represented the Corp's finest, complementing the ship's operations with a proud heritage and high standard of professionalism. Marines have been traditional additions to a ship's company, supplying capabilities for landing parties and repelling boarders, to mention only a couple. The very nature of a modern capital ship demands an air-tight internal and external security, a degree of security the Marines could be counted on to provide. Besides the around-the-clock security watches at sea, duty Marines coordinated the in-port roving patrol and pier watches and served as a moment's notice-control squad. The Marines also assigned an orderly to administer to many of the commanding officer's official affairs, as well as to guarantee his safety. Personnel ordered to correctional custody were guarded by Marines specially trained in rehabilitation. As a branch of the Weapons Department, MarDet assisted in the movement and storage of ordnance and manned one of the ship's four 5-inch guns. The Marines also worked closely with other departments on matters of security and, naturally, ceremonies. The Corps' smartness in dress and manner was called upon for such special occassions as change of command and official visits, as well as for routine ceremonies such as morning and evening colors. Though small in number fabout 60 menl, the Marine Detachment assumed and performed a function vital to the ship's operations, and at the same time maintained a ready force capable of providing combat support anywhere in the world. 0 xl jf stxrr mst' p.r...... .r,,,m,.l. ,WK , , L a anki.W-,1'u1r.-- xx xml. -v Imll X ',,,, ykk ii w IN ,f N 'Uv'- --Q Jw' ' .l ZX lTll'f.fl?QLrXRnl'PRS ll to rl CPL Danny Richards, CPL Ricky Uarnt-ll, bunl btcplwn D. Ball Commanding Officer A distinguished history of service preceded Fighter Squadron 191 into another cruise on Oriskany. The various exercises and operations conducted during the deployment prepared Satan's Kittens to fulfill their duties as attack and reconnaissance aircraft escorts. The squadron was also capable of attack functions and fleet defense. The story of VF-191 dates back to August 15, 1943, when the squadron was established as VF-19 at NAS Los Alamitos, California. The squadron saw its first action as a combat unit during World War II, flying from the deck of the USS Lexington in 1944. While flying the FSF-1 Bearcat aircraft in 1948, the squadron received its present designation as VF-191. VF-191 made its first cruise on Oriskany in 1953, the same year the squadron became the first to qualify all its pilots beyond the speed of sound. Satan's Kittens left Oriskany in 1955, and did not return until 1969. During the interim period, VF-191 served with several other Essex-class carriers, and earned its first award for excellence in battle readiness. The squadron was deployed with Air Wing Nineteen on Oriskany since 1969. Now based at NAS Miramar, California, VF-191 has earned a total of four battle Es, two of them on consecutive combat deployments to Vietnam. A footnote to VF-l91's colorful history, the squadron's insignia, depicting a Hellcat astride a trident, was designed by the late Walt Disney. 66 9 99 atan s Kittens S,-XT.-XN'S KITTENSH QI to rj First row: LT George WV. Ermis Commanding Officer Fighter Squadron 194, making the transition from combat to peace time operations, continued its history of fine service to Oriskany. More than 180 officers and enlisted men of various specialized skills maintained aircraft and equipment to sustain the squadron's mission: air superiority for defense of the fleet and support of other Air Wing Nineteen aircraft. Exemplary alertness on the part of several VF-194 personnel typified the squadron's professionalism. A01 Frank E. Norris and AN Frank C. Spencer distinguished themselves on November 27, 1973, by pulling a flight deck plane captain from the intake of a taxiing F-8 fighter. Eleven days earlier, ADJ3 Dale Munk had spotted and helped extinguish an aircraft fire before it could cause any serious damage to other aircraft on the flight deck. A cruise with the Red Lightningsl' was not without its exciting moments. LCDR James W. Nunn successfully returned his crippled F-81 Crusader to Oriskany and was snared in the barricade while an anxious crew watched over the ship's television system. VF-194 was commissioned as VF-91 at NAS Alameda in 1952. The squadron participated in Korea from the deck of the USS Philippine Sea. Aboard the USS Ranger in 1960, VF-91 became the first squadron to deploy with the new F-8 fighter. The squadron was redesignated VF-194 in 1963 and became part of Air Wing Nineteen aboard the USS Bon Homme Richard. The Red Lightnings consequently participated in the initial air warfare over Vietnam. VF-194 came to Oriskany in 1969 and continued to participate in Vietnam combat operations. The latest deployment marked the squadron's first peace time cruise in eight years. Red Lightningsv I IH!-i RNA K 1 mcl M. ,. ut-xr. i.'l lH limit! P. Bl'f7,lt'l', l,'l lon R.MolIm, I,'l'Rn-h1mlM. Leuschner, Jr. Commanding Officer Attack Squadron 155, a light jet attack squadron, deployed with Criskany to provide air to ground ordnance delivery. Flying the A-7B Corasair 11, the Silver Foxes could deliver all types of ordnance in the Navy's inventory. The first peace time deployment for the squadron since 1964 saw the Silver Foxes engaged in training to achieve and maintain a high state of readiness required of a deployed squadron. Training was accomplished in all phases of flight and maintenance to ensure the necessary level of expertise. VA-155 was commissioned as a carrier bomber squadron, VB- 15, in 1943. During World War II, the squadron participated in the battles at San Bernadino Straits and Leyte, as well as in the Marianas Turkey Shoot. With the end of the war, VB-15 was placed in a reserve status. The squadron was recalled to active duty in 1951, and was designated VA-155 in 1953. VA-155 moved to its present home at NAS Lemoore, California, in 1961, and was the first fleet squadron to arrive at that installation. As a part of Air Group Fifteen, the Silver Foxes made their first combat deployment to Vietnam aboard the USS Coral Sea in 1964. The Silver Foxes transitioned to the A-7 and became part of Air Wing Nineteen in 1969. The squadron, whose name was adopted in honor of a silver-haired aviator who commanded the squadron in 1959, deployed on Qriskany for the first time in 1970. ilrver F woes f F I V' f wat riwi XNll l BMX. French Commanding Officer Attack Squadron 215, along with Oriskany's other embarked squadrons, trained vigorously during the cruise to maintain proficiency in the areas of close air support and reconnaissance interdiction. The efforts of the Barn Owl team resulted in the receipt of the Air Wing Nineteen award for overall outstanding performance during the cruise. Established in 1955, the squadron was homeported at NAS Moffett Field, Califonria, until it moved to NAS Alameda in 1963. As a part of Air Wing Twenty-One, VA-215 made its first combat deployment to Vietnam aboard USS Hancock in 1965. The squadron was decommissioned in 1967 when the A-1 Spad was phased out of the fleet. Recommissioned in 1968, VA- 215 moved to its present home at NAS Lemoore, California, and transitioned to the A-7 Corsair ll. Subsequent cruises included combat deployments on USS Enterprise and a Mediterranean cruise with USS Franklin D. Roosevelt. LCDR R.F.H. Phillips Qfficer in Charge Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron lll, Detachment Six, serving Orisl-:any and the Pacific Fleet for many years, was redesignated during the cruise. Although renamed Carrier Airborne Early Warning Training Squadron 110, Detachment Six, the mission of the detachment remained the same. The El-B Tracer, known to air wing and ship's company alike as the Willy Fudd, served as an airborne radar during the ship's operations. With the aircraft's various equipment, the 'iFuddmen were capable of performing a multitude of tasks, including but not limited to, controlling fighter aircraft, vectoring Strike aircraft to targets, surface surveillance, flight following, and Fudd-controlled approaches to 0riskany's flight deck. The squadron, based at NAS North Island, California, was commissioned VAW-l ll in 1967 when the parent squadron was divided into six separate commands. Those squadrons converted to the E-ZB Hawkeye, but VAVV-lll, now RVAW-110, remained with the Fudd, a reliable workhorse for the fleet. Rodrick Officer in Charge Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron 130, Detachment Three, provided a double-barrelled capability for Qriskany and Air Wing 19. During air operations, EKA-3B A'Whales'l served as airborne gas stations, making fuel available to low state aircraft returning to the ship. When necessary, VAQ-130 crews were trained and prepared for electronic countermeasures The Whales carried equipment and personnel capable of receiving, analyzing, and jamming enemy threat emitters. A-3 jamming procedures could protect aircraft by degrading hostile air surveillance and fire control radars. VAQ-l30, the only squadron homeported at Oriskany's home at NAS Alameda, was commissioned as Carrier Early Warning Squadron 13 and was assigned the missions of early warning and ECM. The return of Det Three to Alameda at the conclusion of 0riskany's deployment marked the end of carrier-based A-3 service to the fleet, a service which dates back to 1956. The squadron was scheduled for transfer to NAS Whidbey lsland, Washington, for conversion to the EA-6B aircraft. T e Zappersv 'lill lf Z.Xlll'lfRS il to illfixsl rout: lflihlii .Xrllnii ll.
