Tense Moments Flight operations-a delicate ballet performed on the periphery of success and disaster-demand careful prep- arations and flawless execution from many people. Men battle chaos, straining for con- trol of a descending aircraft during the last seconds of an imperfect approach before the release ofthe wave off, hold- ing the explosive power of a jet engine in check while being hurled into space and away from the comforting soli- darity of a shipls deck. To achieve these split seconds of electrifying spec- tacle requires hours and sometimes days of less glamorous support work. An important phase of Car-Quals, aircraft recovery demands teamwork and practice to insure safety. Re- turning to their nest, Oriskany's birds find no long expanse of run- way to ease onto, A small floating platform - pitching and rolling in tune to the seas-offers one of thejoys of Naval Aviation.
