Vital Information About Oriskany Oriskany received her name from a Revolutionary War battle fought on August 6, 1777, at Oriskany Creek near Rome, New York. The American militia under General Nicholas Herkimer was ambushed by British and Indian forces attempting to come to the aid of Fort Stanwix. Although General Herkimer was killed in the furious battle, it ended in an American victory, preventing the British occupation of the strategic Mohawk Valley and neutralizing Gen- eral Burgoyne's army at Saratoga. When was Oriskany launched? Oriskany was launched on October 13, 1945 at the Brooklyn Shipyard in New York. When was Oriskany commissioned? Oriskany was commissioned on Sept- ember 25, 1950. World War Two had ended with Oriskany unfinished at Brooklyn, and left incomplete until the outbreak of hostilities in Korea. The ship consists of 12 departments: Medical, Dental, Navigation, Com- munications, Administration, Supply, Air, Engineering, Aircraft, Intermedi- ate Maintainence, Weapons, Oper- ations, and Deck. Each department is under control of a Department Head. The departments break down into divisions under a Division Officer and Division Leading Petty Officer. 12
