This ambitious venture was the first step in an evolution which has resulted in today's highly sophisticated and versatile attack aircraft carrier. In an age when immediate response to fast changing international developments is essential, the attack carrier has assumed an important role as an instrument of national purpose. With the capability to move quickly and to react immediately, the attack carrier is a formidable weapon in America's arsenal. Today, on Yankee Station in the Gulf of Tonkin, United States Navy aircraft carriers are performing missions in support of United States efforts in South Vietnam Daily, Navy aircraft deliver their bombs, rockets and missiles on target with pinpoint accuracy in defense 'of freedom not only for that embattled country, but for freedom deserving men throughoutthe world. The development of Naval Air has come a long way in 58 years, with the emergence of today's highly mobile and highly diverse fleet of attack carriers. ln November 1968 a long, nine month overhaul was complete and ORISKANY was readied for her tenth Western Pacific cruise, her fourth off Vietnam. The technical improvements in her equipment were matched by the renewed dedication of her crew and a thorough shake- down for the ship and Air Wing Team began. On April 16, 1969, after five months of intensive training, ORISKANY and her embarked Attack Carrier Air Wing NINETEEN departed her homeport, Naval Air Station, Alameda enroute to the Western Pacific. One month later to the day, on May 16, 1969, the Mighty 'O' arrived on the line in the Gulf of Tonkin. Commander Carrier Division Seven and his Staff embarked and ORISKANY took her turn at bat. When compared to the vast oceans of the world, the physical limits of Yankee Station are small. But, by the nature of the Vietnamese conflict, Yankee Station is the main arena, it is where the action is. During the 1969 WESTPAC cruise, ORISKANY spent more than 100 days on the line in that area. She visited Hawaii and the Philippines, too, with Hong Kong and Japan in between, the crew enjoyed some well-deserved and hard-earned rest and relaxation. This book is the story of ORlSKANY's 1969 WESTPAC Cruise. lt portrays the daily, cyclic activities of all 3,500 Oriskanymen in action, and highlights the changes in our Navy -then and now. copy to: Dr. Allard, or-oaaga, Bldg 210 wwr . . - OFFICE Ol IHl'1O1dflA2L'IOW f L c 'C 1'-I avy Dcpal'tmcn't Washington, D.C. 20350 February 2, l97l MEMORANDUM FOR RECORD Subj: Possible new book about USS ORISKANYfVietnam Mr. Zalin Grant, free lance writer, called lOOOf2 Feb, request- ing the following information pertaining to subject. It provides a Marine Corps unit which is organized, trained and equipped for operations ashore, and it provides for the internal security of the ship. The Marine Detachment acts as a separate Marine Command in the preparation and submission ofthe unit diary, personnel administration, promotions, requisitioning and accounting for Marine Corps property including ammunition and small arms, the accomplishment of training and similar details. The Detachment provides for the internal security of the ship by providing sentries and orderlies and posting security guards for special designated spaces. Additionally, the Detachment provides for the external security of the ship by instructing, posting, and supervising seamen sentries at various locations throughout the ship such as the fantail, sponsons, and aircraft elevators. The Marine Detachment also administers the ship's brig by providing sentries for its internal security and for the security of prisoners on work details and other required evolutions about the ship. The Marine Detachment provides personnel for the rendering of honors and the conduct of formal, official ceremonies. They also form the honor guardfcolor guard for other impressive functions aboard ship, including inspections, awards presentations, and memorial services. Marines form the nucleus for the ship's Landing Party Rifle Company. They supervise its organization, training and operations ashore as well as insure that thely are themselves trained and equipped for combat as ore. A familiar sight during ammunition UNREPS is the Marine Bombfin Busters. All bomb fins that come aboard Oriskany are removed from pallets and containers by Marines who then load them on carts and deliver them to storage areas. ln addition, the Marine Detachment accomplishes a comprehensive training program to prepare each Marine for his part in the Corps' primary mission- combat ashore. Physical training, close order drill and an extensive and varied course in military subjects contribute significantly to maintain this Force in Readiness . l Q3 ' viz, gy., Q I l,,....,, , . 1 'IB an ' , . .. ,.,...,,... , ,..4nm.- .,. ...-,+.,-ff. - .. . -- Q S N i 1 C i I V1 vs A1 E i. I know her abilities, her strengths her WIIIIVIEVVGSS and her dogged determination to do a job well. ln short, l know you, the officers and men of the ORISKANYXAIR WING NINETEEN Team, who embody these qualities and who are the very life blood of the ship. You have continuously sought to excel and that you have succeededso magnificently in that pursuit isa source of great pride to me, a pride that you should share both individually and collectively. Never havel been disappointed when any effort on your part has been requested-you have exhibited commendable performance on every occasion. Your excellence has been evidenced in many ways. Operationally you have demonstrated outstanding skill in the highly coordinated, integrated effort required in the innumerable functions comprising the makeup of attack carrier aviation. Your concern for the less fortunate has been admirably mirrored by your voluntary donations of some 545,000 to Navy Relief and Combined Charities campaigns. Your continued support of an overseas orphanage contributed to an even larger total. Visitors to the ship have consistently commented favorably on the warm and friendly atmosphere that you have created. In the area of our home port you have so distinguished yourselves that the City of Oakland saw fit in 0ctober 1968 to adopt ORISKANY, thereby creating a special bond between city and ship that will have lasting value in civic participation and community relations. ln many ways the decreased tempo of the fight against aggression that you have experienced during this deployment to Southeast Asia has made your job even tougher. In an all-out war, despite its inherent tragedy and suffering, the Serviceman enjoys the unified support of his countrymen. ln such a situation conformance is relatively easy. In the present case, where dissent has such an erosive effect on national unity and causes some to question our highest ideals, it is not easy to hang in there. You have endured under these circumstances-and you have done so with dignity. Most of myobservations, and the pleasure derived therefrom, have occurred in our natural habitat, the seas-in fairlweather and foul, from the winter cold of Northern California waters to the near stifling summer environment of the Tonkin Gulf and the South China Sea. From stem to stern, from the bilges tothe forepeak, l've watched you carry out your frequently hazardous duties with that quality which I believe transcends almost all others, an attitude of fair play, of concern for your fellow man and, in particular, for your shiprnates. This attitude, in my opinion, is largely what has raised you above the ordinary to the extraordinary. It has made the experience of being your shipmate the most rewarding one of my career. For this experience l will be ever in your debt. To each of you, and to your loyal loved ones who keep the home fires burning while you serve so well, I extend my warmest greetings and my deepest appreciation. May all of you, whatever your endeavor. enjoy success and happiness-and may God bless you, every one. Sincerely, KENYON Captain, U. S. Navy T-ff CAPTAIN IACK S. The squadron consists of some seventy officers and six hundred enlisted men, and is home based at Phototown , NAS Miramar, San Diego. The primary mission of VFP-63 is to provide aerial photography and aerial photographic intelligence in support of fleet operations. The RF-8G aircraft is utilized and is capable of taking forward fire, vertical, split vertical, panoramic and camouflage detecting infra red photography. Photographic coverage is flown over areas of North Vietnam in the heaviest SAM, MIG, and AAA environment in the world. Due to sophisticated electronic countermeasures, missiles, and fighter escorts, however, NVN reconnaissance missions are normally accomplished without incident. These missions over North Vietnam yield vital intelligence concerning defenses, construction, lines of communication, and amount of military supplies moving into South Vietnam. VFP-63 supplies Detachments for all 27 Charlie class aircraft carriers, such as the Mighty including those carriers deployed in the Mediterranean. Up to six detachments may, therefore, be formed at the same time to meet requirements. VFP-63 Det 34 has been proud to make its home in the greatest fighting aircraft carrier in the Seventh Fleet the USS ORISKANY, and of its significant contribution to the United States' efforts in support of the Republic of Vietnam. San Diego has been the home of early warning since the former squadron VAW-111 had its beginning as a research development of project Cadillac at MIT near the conclusion of World War. ll. During those first days, the mission of early warning was performed by the AD-5Q aircraft and later on by the TF-1Q. Today VAW-111 is an integral part of Carrier Airborne Early Warning Wing 11 which is composed of five squadrons flying the E2A aircraft, and one flying the E- IB, VAW-111. The E-1B squadron is actually seven detachments designated by the hull numbers of the aircraft carrier on which they are deployed. VAW-11.1 flies the Willy Fudd , as the Grumman EIB Tracer is called, while the other squadrons fly the SuPeV Fudd , which is the nickname for the Grumman EZA Hawkeye. The Willy Fudd is flown on 27C cIaSS carriers such as the ORISKANY, and the USUPQV Fudds fulfill the Early Warning role on the large' carriers such as the ENTERPRISE. Currently these tw0 aircraft perform the various missions of the E?flY Warning role on the strike control, pathfindingi navigational assistance, and middle man relay communications for missions flying beyond the radio distance of the parent carrier. The Fudd ' on the GRISKANY serves as Air Wing NlNETEEN'S flying fadaf station. HELSUPPRO DETACHMENT 34 ANGELS f i , rl 1 fs The primary mission of Helicopter Combat Support Squadron ONE, homeported at NAS Imperial Beach, is rescue. Since its commissioning in 1948, the squadron's Detachments have saved over 1400 persons in distress both on land and at sea. During the Korean War HC-1 pilots and aircrewmen routinely braved hostile fire to retrieve downed pilots from behind enemy lines. These acts of heroism culminated in the awarding of The Medal of Honor, the Nations's highest decoration, to one of the Squadron's pilots. This proud tradition is still very much alive. Today HC-1's DET 34 flies the UH-2C: a twin turbine, high speed helicopter especially configured for night, all weather search and rescue. During flight operations the Angel , as the helicopter is called, IS on ready alert in the plane guard position ready to deliver airmen from the briny deep. The Detachment also hauls mail, supplies, medlfgal patients, chaplains, and other personnel in, 'ls helicopters on a daily basis in order to provide l98'5t'C support for the ships traveling in company W'th the Mighty O . While these activities are not as dramaflg as an open sea rescue, they are every bit as FHUC demanding ot the pilots skill, The appearance Oftlle HC-1 helicopter with a bright orange U.S. Mail bag lS indeed a welcome sight to every sailor.
