Foreword Sea and sky ...... a twin challenge for the modern sailor. From time immemorial courageous men have 'G gone down to the sea in ships ', to battle the sea and the elements. The story of this struggle is never- ending, a story of man mastering but never conquering. With the advent of the airplane as an implement of defense, a new chapter has been added to the story, a new challenge to implement the old. From this new challenge was born a new type of sailor mthe carrier sailor. Boilermen, cooks, tailors, machinist mates, aviation repairmen, yeomen, pilots, telemen, carrier sailors all. As carrier sailors, each one is proud to be a part of the Hghting unit that takes the action to the enemy and hits them where they live. As ORISKANY carrier sailors we have yet another reason to be proud. Whether pounding a typewriter in X Division spaces or spotting a plane for the catapult crew to start the strike by sending off the first aircraft, our carrier sailors are moulding a new Navy tradition ' -launch and recover. Our pride is a quiet type derived from constant accomplishment of dangerous missions, V because be it peace or war, every Air Operation is fraught with the threat of sobering death. Each of us knows this as we do our share in the overall team eiTort of .an air strikemeach of us knows that a single mistake can cost the lives of many men. But we do our job i and the big WE on the side of the Island Structure bears witness to how well we have accomplished our goal. ,.4444444444444 44.4-444444 4444444444444 .44-44444444444 .4444444444444 44444444..4.4444 44444.4444.4444 .44.4444.4:444444 4444444444444 44, .4444444444444 .4444444444444 4.44444.44.4 .4444444444444 -4- 4444444444444 .4444444444444 44444444Y444T4-4 .4444444444444 4444444444444. .444.4444444.44.4 4444444444444 .4444444.444444 .4444444444444 ...4-444444444 4444444444444 L4444444444444 .4-444444444-44.4 .44-44.4444444444 4444444444444 444444444 444444444 4444444444444 .4444444444444 4444444444444 .44.4444444444.4 4444444444444 4444444444444 :4444444444444 .4444444444444 .4444444444444 .4444444444444 .4444444444444 4444444444444 -444.44444-L.. 4444444444444 .44-4444444-4444 .4444444444444 .4444444444444 4444444444444 .44444444-444477444 4444444444444 4444444444444 444.4444--4.4.
