Mrs. Will Lauritz, a Red Cross representative, gave us three days of practice lessons. We borrowed three freshmen girls to use as patients. We took the course to learn what we would do in case of illness or accident if no one was there to help us. It also gave us an idea of what we would do if any of us decided to go into the nursing profession. Some of the things we studied were causes and symptons of illness, the patient in bed, and food and nutrition. In the practice lessons we learned the correct way to wash our hands, to take temperature, to change bed linen with the patient in bed and out of bed, how to move the patient in bed, and how to give a bed bath. We practiced feeding the patient in bed, filling a hot water bottle, applying hot and cold compresses, giving a steam inhalation to a patient in bed, and applying sterile dressings. We made im- provised equipment to make the patient more comfortable while in bed. We received Red Cross pins and certificates for taking part in the course. We enjoyed taking the course, and we learned a great deal from it. Si-N' -W R 'W 9 ti my me ,- -A I I F .-fx-1 5 if . 5' - '11 ' -: ,, QQ f-.. ..,,.igs,- 44 Q.. i, h H L I . ., .f x , . Ah. A , at . The guests descended the stairs to a gang plank to enter the South Sea Islands where the Hawaiian Cruise theme was carried out in all the decorations and details. The sky was made of solid blue crepe paper from which twinkling stars were suspended, and the moon was shining at the east side of the island. The south wall was covered with turquoise waves meeting the darker blue star-covered sky. A Wicker furniture was used for the setting under the moon and a boat was anchored to a palm tree. The banquet was prepared by the members of the junior class and served by the mem- bers of the sophomore class. The waitresses were dressed in grass skirts and peasant blouses with an orchid tiara in their hair. They had leis around their necks, wrists, and ankels. The waiters were dressed in jeans and brightly colored shirts with a lei around their necks, and all were in native Hawaiian traditional habit, and were barefoot. The tables were centered with silver guitars, nut cups were little hula girls, and dinner was served by candle light. Each guest was presented a program which carried the menu of suggestive Hawaiian items, which afforded much entertainment in guessing just what foods they would find on their plates. Hawaiian music provided a soft background for the dinner. The sophomore class and the junior boys' quartet presented the program. Mrs. Brewster sang several Hawaiian numbers during the program. The coronation was one of the highlights of the evening. Ted Feick and Judy Gillispie were the King and Queen of the Prom and were crowned by Patti and Rollie Ray. 'F ,' ii yi? 4-1,-F Q5 ,. .uf Q? Homecoming 4 The Orient Homecoming dance was held on September 30th in the gym following the football game with Adair. The decorations consisted of red and white streamers hung as a ceiling across the gymnasium and extending down one wall. At one end of the gym, on the wall, were small paper footballs with the names of the boys who were on the football squad written on them. The other end was reserved for the throne which was on a decorated platform. The poles were made with red streamers on white paper to represent candy canes. The queen, Patti Ray, was crowned by football captain, Al Davis. The crown was covered with gold foil, Around the bottom part there was a band of purple, and covering part of that was a smaller band of light lavender. The music was furnished by the Rhythm Kings featuring Tom Son. ' I , 'IX 'iii .
