I X, 5 , wa., FOREWARD Recorded on the pages of the 1965 TOM TOM are the activities, the fun, and the achievements which the student body and faculty of Orestimba Union High School have participated in during this year. The Staff sincerely hopes that this TOM TOM will recall to you many pleasant memories and that it will serve as a reminder of those wonderful days spent at O. U. H. S. TABLE OF CONTENTS ADMINISTRATION.. . 4 CLASSES. . . I I ORGANIZATIONS. . . 41 ACTIVITIES.. 59 SPORTS. . . . 77 ADVERTISEMENTS. . . . IOO INDEX. . . I I5 -' ADMINISTRATION BOARD OF TRUSTEES Left to right. Mr. Louie Coelhog Mr. Enos Tosta, clerkg Mr. Lee jasper, presidentg Mr. Edward Laflerg and Mr. Ed. Cabral. The Board of Trustees is a group of citizens elected by the people of this district to represent them in matters concerning administration, property, maintenance, and personnel of this high school district. Since many school functions lie in the hands of these few men, Without them our public school would have a slim chance of existence. We are grateful for the careful consideration the Trustees gave in arriving at each de- cision they made for this school year. 5 DR. WILLIAM A. GUSTAFSON DISTRICT SUPERINTENDENT - PRINCIPAL 6 WE ARE ON THE SHORE . . . After four pleasant and productive years with the Class of 1965, we of the Orestimba Faculty must say farewell and good luck to you. During these years, most of you have grown and changed more than you realize. As Freshmen, you appeared somewhat confused by the sudden change in your status from competent eighth graders who had adjusted well to elementary school life, to planning and leading school activities, and to the responsible role of looking after the younger ones . In 1961 you became the younger ones in a new milieu, sometimes tenderly protected by--and occasionally shielded from--the attentions of the upper classmen. We regret that not all of your 1961 classmates were able to make the adjustment to high school requirements and responsibilities, and we know that in the com- ing years those students who dropped by the wayside will envy you as you take your place in society at higher levels of productive citizenship. . . . THE OCEAN LIES AHEAD. Now you are about to leave another situation in which you have made a com- fortable and profitable adjustment to embark on a new phase of your growth as men and women. You will again be novices, whether as Freshmen for further schooling or as beginning workers in the workaday world. You will find yourselves with new people, with new demands made upon you, and with new opportunities to display your talents and abilities. Nor will this be the last time you meet change, for the way of life in our mod- ern world is change and challenge. Whenever you begin to think there is no need for change and learning, you will then have begun the decline during which the world passes you by, and which ends with death. A We have every confidence that you will enjoy a long and pleasant journey across the sea of life as, with mixed emotions, we bid you BON VOYAGE. 7 OUR LILLIAN ANDERSON Library, English IV, Senior English Reviewg CSF and Browns Advisor. With the return of sixteen lettermen from the previous season the Warriors loaded forward to a fair showing in the 1965 Football Season. This year's team was dependent on the fact that its players were hard hitting, quick think- ing, but most of all that they played as a team. This is the reason that the team understood the need for the fresh blood that had come up from the junior Varsity squad. The Warriors schedule for this year's season showed Schools that Orestimba hadn't played for many years. Many of these schools were much bigger than ours, but in the words of the coach, john-Miller, They can only play eleven players at a time, just like us. The Warriors proved him right by beating such schools as Escalon, Hugh- son, and Bret Heart. Many teams are hurt by players injured in practice or in non-league games. This happened to Orestimba when the team's fullback, Donald Mederios, was hurt. Things weren't looking to good for the Warriors then. But be- cause of Ron Cornell, the team's and league's best fullback, the Warriors were able to stay high in the league standings . Ron Cornell had a lot of help from linemen such as Ron Hansen, Alex Landeros, and Glen Crow. Without, these boys Ron could not have made much yardage, even though he has' great drive and persistence. The Warriors started out the season by meeting the Bret Heart Bulldogs. In the first home game of the season the Warriors gave our school a victory. That made everyone hope that maybe another football championship would comeback to Newman with a 7-O defeat. ln the second game of the season the Warriors met the Gustine Redskins. Although the Warriors played a good game the Redskins won by the score of 20-O. The fifth and final non league game was held in Hughson against the Hughson Huskies. This was one of New- man's hurt games of the season. When the Warriors went in at the half the score was 13-O in favor of the Hus- kies. But because of penalties against the Huskies and pass interceptions, the Warriors defensive half, backs Robert Cabral and Larry Tucker, and a punt return by Dan Joyce the Warriors were able to rally 20 points to beat the Huskies 20-13. Against Ripon in the first league game of the season the Warriors were able to score 12 points to defeat the Ripon Indians 12-6. In the seventh game of the season against LeGrand, the Warriors lost a Co-Captain Robert Cabral Ron Hansen Danny Joyce Alex Landeros M ,,,r - Q ' -vtf Hard charging like this helped Ron No. 26 gain yardage. H close one in the last few moments of play, by a score of 13-6. Q Y Mg ' In Denair the Warriors lost what they thought was going to be an easy Q? game. But the Cayotes proved them miserably wrong by defeating us 27-7. 2 1 3, Things were pretty bad the night of the Mariposa game with fog cover- f - ing the field. The players could hardly see 30 yards in front of them. But A -155' because they were playing on their home field the Warriors were able to scalp Mariposa 34-2. A In the last game of the season in Hilmar where it was cold and misty the f Warriors were able to defeat the Yellow Jackets 27-13 to end the season i with a 6-4 record. In ' ..'V j The Warriors ended the season in a three way tie for second place. Some w t -if of their statistics were: total yards rushing 2310, number of first downs M passing 425, and number of first downs ru.shing 120. Ron Cornell CO-Captain lt usually took more than 2 players to stop Ron Cornell No. 26 in gaining more yardage Few athletes in the history of Orestimba's football team have been able to compare to the ability of Ronald Cornell. Ron is one of the few personalities that has come along to add to the pride of the Warriors squad, his school, town, and even state. In the past four years Ron has played a very import- ant part in making up the Warriors and Braves team. As a freshman and sophomore, Ron was a junior Varsity player, he showed much more eagerness to play than many of the upper classmen on the Var- sity Squad. As a junior, in his first year as a varsity player, Ron made first string. He played left halfback, and gained 788 yards rushing. He was one of the best halfbacks during that season and was noted for the teams and leagues most valuable halfback. Ron's senior year showed his best ability as a foot- ball player. In ten games he carried the ball 192 times for 1, 190 yards. Because of this Ron was ranked Sth in rushing in Northern California. He also made All Conference League two consecutive years. He was able to complete 9 passes for 22 attempts and 110 yards, -and caught 5 passes for 130 yards. He scored 15 touch downs and 2 points after touch downs. His average for both junior and senior year was 6.5 yards per carry. Totally, Ron Cornell was able to gain 2,518 yards, for two years of Varsity Football. Orestimba Union High School was proud to have Ron as a student and hopes that his eagerness has inspired others to show enthusiasm in sports. 1 ff:.t 4.AY':wmm0Hw -K5Hz',waf rm?
