18 Jump is held every Fall and Spring term and celebrates Greek Life fraternities who are in the Interfraternity Council (IFC) and then men who are newly joining them. The name Jump is given to the event when a new member runs down the Memorial Union steps and is boosted into the arms of the house he is joining. Over 700 men each year join Greek life. Although Jump only happens twice a year, men may informally join a fraternity house any time during the year, unlike sororities, in which most cases, you must join choose a house the beginning of Fall term.

Anyone walking through the Memorial Union Quad on October 8th would have thought there was a parade going on, as hundreds of college women holding signs and balloons gathered that afternoon, dressed in bright colors and shouting loud chants. Music blasted from large speakers while a DJ played and a few select dads with quality cameras wandered around documenting the whole spectacle of bid day, a tradition for all PanHellenic sororities on campus. Members of each house wait in excitement to introduce their newly bid members to the Greek community, then bring them back to their respec- tive houses for bid day activities. Each house picks a theme, ranging from popcorn boxes and the 50's to flower headbands and tribal. It's one of the most looked forward to days of the year, to see members rushing down the Memorial Union steps to their new sisters. Story by: Holly Smith Photos by: Baylee Bulzer
