Last summer, eight students enrolled in the school of design and environment's class, DHE 299, hoping to learn and explore the elements of fashion styling. Instead of traditional lectures and tedious homework assignments, the three-week course took an unusual hands-on approach. In the course's first week, instructor Keith Nishida assigned his eight students their final project: Create a fashion magazine. With their sights set high, the students worked tirelessly on the assignment, eventually leading to an end result beyond anything they had originally anticipated. DAMchic Magazine began as a fictitious class project and developed into a full-time endeavor. r, ■Excerpt from the Daily Barometer. written by Gabriella Morrongiello

To others, this is a time to travel; whether it's back home to see family, or out of state, winter break is a reason to get away from the classroom atmosphere. For the extra time some students had, they participated in recreational activites like playing in the snow or going to the movies. During this winter break, students focused on the more enjoyable things they could remember. There are many events and activities students can do if staying in Corvallis as well. Many clubs and bars like Impulse, Harrison's, and Tom s Peacock Bar Grill are just some of the places to kill extra time. Feel like rocking out but can't find a place to play? Many students and faculty members run local events for bands. Want to catch up on the more cultural side? The Majestic Theater is perfect to catch a play or even audition for. Do you not like the cold? Many students have planned to stay inside to a warm hot chocolate and an open fire. The ideas to keep your mind occupied is endless, it comes down to what you want to do to spend free time you've earned after ten weeks of studying and reading. -Matt Stein
