Teri Crisp, a fifth year senior with an English major, is a remarkable student. While involved in student activities and working part time her first four years at school. Teri has maintained a high grade point average. Born in San Francisco. Teri attended elementary school in California, and after her family moved to the Philomath. Oregon area, she attended Philomath High School. She attended Oregon State for four years, then visited Europe for a year, and returned as a fifth year senior to complete her degree. As a sophomore. Teri was an editor for Montage Magazine. Writing feature stories. Teri previewed plays and artshows. profiled individuals, and covered other areas of entertainment. She found working on the staff very interesting and valuable. Providing needed help to many people. Teri worked for the Communications Skills Center during her junior and senior year. The center helps anyone that desires aid with tests and competencies. Teri spent an average of two hours a day helping people with communication problems as a writing tutor. This was a valuable experience for me, remarked Teri. I had to really learn grammar. To explain the concepts you really have to have a handle on them.” During these first four years at Oregon State. Teri also worked part time at Mazzi's, and did secretarial work during the summers. Teri spent her next year in Europe after she was given the opportunity to study in France by the American Heritage Program within Oregon State. She attended school in Avignon for the first three months, and then traveled around the continent for the latter months. While living within the city of Avignon, she stayed with a French family. Just by being able to live with a family you learn so much about a country.” After living in France. Teri traveled for six months to various countries; she went to Italy, Yugoslavia. Greece and Egypt. She believes Egypt was the most unusual part of the trip. She noted the tremendous gaps between the poor and the rich, and the old and the new. and the effect that larger countries, such as the United States have on Egypt. Through her studies and travels, she has become interested in cross-cultural and international relations. She believes that language affects the way that we perceive others from different countries and we tend to misunderstand their culture. Each country is so interrelated and interdependent that many organizations are in need of cross-cultural relations. After attending graduate school. Teri plans to involve herself in a career in which she can use what she has learned to this use. -Teresa Hewitt 28

rruito 6ujJl4e L T) erseverance. He just doesn’t know when to quit. remarked Jack Riley. X head coach of the OSU baseball team, as he described Knute Buehler. “He’s the type of student athlete that college athletics are all about. Knute Buehler. a pitcher for the OSU baseball team, is a junior majoring in Microbiology with hopes of entering medical school. Knute graduated from Roseburg High School where he participated in both football and baseball. He was honored as the All-Southern Oregon Conference Pitcher his senior year. Not only did he receive honors athletically but also academically. He was a member of the National Honor Society all four years. Knute’s decision to come to Oregon State was prompted by the pre-med program as well as the baseball program. He was influenced in becoming a doctor by his older brother Mark, who is now finishing his residency in Portland. Oregon. Knute remembers coming to OSU with Mark and attending some of his classes. He was fascinated by the type of classes Mark was taking and wondered if he would ever do something like it. These visits to OSU also sparked his interest in playing baseball, when one weekend Mark had to study so Knute had to find something to do. There happened to be a baseball game going on that weekend so he sat and watched it. From that point. Knute always had it in the back of his mind he wanted to play baseball. Upon entering OSU. Knute tried out for the team as an unrecruited player. Jack Riley saw a quality in him as a walk-on and decided he would be a player, down the road, that would develop. As a freshman Knute made a contribution to the baseball program as well as achieving scholastic honors. He was accepted into two freshman honorarics. Phi Eta Sigma and Alpha Lambda Delta. Despite his disappointing sophomore year in baseball. Knute managed to maintain a 4.0 GPA throughout the year. He felt as if his baseball performance took a big step backwards. It was partly due to a muscle injury, but the main reason was more of a mental frame of mind that he could not shake. He feels this was caused by playing too much baseball in one year. He played Legions, right after his freshman year at OSU. which consisted of a series of games throughout the summer. I saw the bad side of baseball that year. Knute explained. “The people in the stands started to get pretty cruel, which left a bad taste in my mouth for baseball. By the end of the season last year Knute was about to step off the mound for good. But talks with coach Riley and Del Kerber. the OSU pitching coach, convinced Knute to give it another try. Through that perseverance. Knute will contribute everything he has to both baseball and medicine. According to Riley. “His contributions will be nothing short of success. — Currie Smith
