Teri Crisp, a fifth year senior with an English major, is a remarkable student. While involved in student activities and working part time her first four years at school. Teri has maintained a high grade point average. Born in San Francisco. Teri attended elementary school in California, and after her family moved to the Philomath. Oregon area, she attended Philomath High School. She attended Oregon State for four years, then visited Europe for a year, and returned as a fifth year senior to complete her degree. As a sophomore. Teri was an editor for Montage Magazine. Writing feature stories. Teri previewed plays and artshows. profiled individuals, and covered other areas of entertainment. She found working on the staff very interesting and valuable. Providing needed help to many people. Teri worked for the Communications Skills Center during her junior and senior year. The center helps anyone that desires aid with tests and competencies. Teri spent an average of two hours a day helping people with communication problems as a writing tutor. This was a valuable experience for me, remarked Teri. I had to really learn grammar. To explain the concepts you really have to have a handle on them.” During these first four years at Oregon State. Teri also worked part time at Mazzi's, and did secretarial work during the summers. Teri spent her next year in Europe after she was given the opportunity to study in France by the American Heritage Program within Oregon State. She attended school in Avignon for the first three months, and then traveled around the continent for the latter months. While living within the city of Avignon, she stayed with a French family. Just by being able to live with a family you learn so much about a country.” After living in France. Teri traveled for six months to various countries; she went to Italy, Yugoslavia. Greece and Egypt. She believes Egypt was the most unusual part of the trip. She noted the tremendous gaps between the poor and the rich, and the old and the new. and the effect that larger countries, such as the United States have on Egypt. Through her studies and travels, she has become interested in cross-cultural and international relations. She believes that language affects the way that we perceive others from different countries and we tend to misunderstand their culture. Each country is so interrelated and interdependent that many organizations are in need of cross-cultural relations. After attending graduate school. Teri plans to involve herself in a career in which she can use what she has learned to this use. -Teresa Hewitt 28
