1985 NORTHWEST NUCLEAR DUMP?-The Energy Department includes the Hanford site in Washington state in its list of leading candidates to be the nation’s first permanent burial ground for nuclear waste, but immediately encounters a great deal of legal and political opposition. President Reagan will pick three of the sites for extensive drilling and testing. WHOOP-WHOOP- Portland’s new mayor and former tavern owner Bud ('lark officially takes office. February THE HEART OF ROCK ROLL- Popular rock singer Huey Lewis plays at Gill Coliseum to a large, diverse and very receptive audience. CONTROVERSIAL BUDGET PROPOSEI)-Reagan submits a 974 billion dollar budget for fiscal year 1986, calling for nearly 40 billion dollars to be cut from domestic programs while requesting an increase of 30 billion dollars for the Pentagon. The plan also forecasts a 180 billion dollar deficit. POSTAGE HIKE- The price of a first class postage stamp rises this month from 20 cents to 22 cents. The first rise in 3': years, the postal service says the increase is necessary to keep pace with inflation. March 600 FOR RALPH- OSU head basketball coach Ralph Miller wins his 600th game. This win moves him into 9th position on the all time career victory list among collegiate basketball coaches. INAUGURATION FOR BYRNE-Inauguration ceremonies welcoming new OSU president John Byrne take place this month. President Byrne replaces Robert MacVicar as president of OSU upon MacVicar’s retirement after holding that office for 14 years. CHERNENKO DIES- Long ailing Soviet president Konstantin Chernenko dies of natural causes and is replaced by Mikhail Gorbachev. Gorbachev’s appointment sparks a good deal of speculation about U.S.-Soviet relations mainly because of the new leader’s relatively young age. At 54, he is likely to be in power for many years. April GORBACIIEV-REAGAN SUMMIT?-Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev says he has accepted President Reagan’s invitation to a super power summit and has ordered missile deployments in Europe frozen until November. Gorbachev has not mentioned a possible date or place for a summit. OREGON LOTTERY- The Oregon State lottery officially starts this month with prizes ranging from two dollars to possible millions. Each ticket sells for one dollar, with 10 cents from each dollar being put into a giant “jackpot” cash prize. May BOATING TRAGEDY- Two OSU students are killed at Lake Shasta over the Memorial Day weekend. Laurl Chiaretta drowns after trying to save Thomas Morrish who was struck by the boat which had been towing the pair and was returning to pick them up. MOUNT ST. HELENS- On the fifth year anniversary of the great explosion of May 18, 1980, Mt. St. Helens is still showing signs of life as witnessed by recent dome building activity. UNITED STRIKES- Scores of commuters and vacationers fight long ticket lines when United Airlines pilots call a strike against the company - one of the largest air carriers in the nation. PLAYBOY TRYOUTS- Playboy magazine photographer David Chan comes to campus to interview co-eds for the magazine’s up-coming “Girls of the Pac-10” issue. June DOWNTOWN MALL- Developers have unveiled plans for a 10-12 million dollar shopping mall to be built in downtown Corvallis. GRADUATION- 3,679 degrees are awarded to OSU students in the third largest graduation in the university’s history. The graduates range in age from 20 to 63 and represent 48 states and 64 countries. BEAVER HOOPS- The OSU Beaver basketball team makes it to the first round of NCAA play against Notre Dame. 13
