1984 September HUNTING MISHAP- Thomas Hogg, OSU professor of anthropology and assistant dean of research dies from a ricochet bullet in a hunting accident. ENDURANCE RECORD BROKEN-Three cosmonauts aboard the Soviet Salyut 7 space station break the 1 12 day space endurance record for consecutive number of days in space. A.I.D.S. SCARE- Fear of contracting A.I.D.S. (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) keeps many from donating blood and bloodbank reserves are dangerously depleted across the country. ARTS PARK OPENS- The Bruce Starker Arts Park, sporting an amphitheater, fountain, pond and bike trails, on a 15 acre plot of land between Corvallis and Philomath receives its official dedication. REAGAN GROMYKO- President Reagan meets with Soviet foreign minister Andrei Gromyko, the president’s first in-depth talk with a Soviet leader. October DETROIT WINS- Rowdy fans go wild after the Detroit Tigers win the 1984 World Series for the first time since 1969. THREE SHARE NOBEL- Three researchers win the 1984 Nobel Prize in medicine for their work in pioneering studies in immunology that have led to promising new treatments for diseases ranging from allergies to cancer. They are Niels Kaj Jeine, Georges Koehler, and Cesar Milstein. BABY FAE- A dying 14-day-old infant girl receives the transplanted heart of a baboon sparking many ethical controversies. GANDHI ASSASSINATED- Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi is killed by assassins, setting off violent rioting by Hindu mobs seeking revenge against members of the Sikh faith. November ELECTION RESULTS- The incumbent republicans. President Ronald Reagan and Vice-President George Bush win the 1985 presidential election with a resounding sweep of 49 states, carrying 60 percent of the popular vote. The defeated democratic ticket of Walter Mondale and Geraldine Ferraro still make history though with Ms. Ferraro being the first woman to run on a national ticket. SNIPER ATTACK- A University of Oregon student terrorizes the U of O campus, killing one man and wounding another before taking his own life. WHERE’S THE BEEF?- Clara Peller, age 80, immortalizes the phrase “Where’s the beef? with her TV commercials for Wendy’s restaurants. ETHIOPIAN FAMINE- Americans become aware of the major African famine gripping several nations of that country. Ethiopia being among the worst hit. SECOND ARTIFICIAL HEART TRANSPLANT-William Schroeder, the second person ever to receive the artificial heart transplant seemed to be faring well after the 6 hour implant operation. Doctors say Schroeder has fewer other complications than did Barney Clark, the first artificial heart recipient who was able to live for 1 12 days with the implant. December SWEET SUCCESS- Dr. Daniel Azarnoff introduces a molecular model of the artificial sweetener “Nutra-sweet”, a nonnutritive, low calorie sweetener that is quickly replacing saccharine in many low calorie foods. BHOPAL DISASTER- Deadly gas leaks from a Union Carbide plant in Bhopal, India killing an estimated 4 10 people and causing health ailments in countless others within a 25 mile radius of the plant. NEW FOOTBALL COACH- David Kragthorpe is chosen to replace the ousted •Joe Avezzano as OSU’s new head football coach. January DRY SPELL A SURPRISE- January quickly becomes the driest on record. But the lack of precipitation seems to be well countered by the reserves from a near record snow pack which grew substantially during November and December when record setting rainfall was recorded. STUDENT AID IN JEOPARDY-President Reagan proposes a massive cut in federally funded student aid programs in an effort to “help balance the budget”. 12
