The Place... changes but little. Ivy-covered buildings in soft earthy tones are pretty much the same as when moms and dads crossed the quad. Comfortable to some, too conservative to others, there is none the less, a year-round beauty to the campus. The trees erupt in a riot of color in fall, and provide fragrance and shade in spring. The quad sprouts sun-worshippers in abundance on a warm afternoon, yet in the winter it can seem pretty bare. The Place 9

The People... make the University. Professors fill classrooms with vitality or boredom. Students come from everywhere in all shapes and sizes. Farmers from the flatlands. Rednecks from the hills. ROTC's running around with cold ears. Sophisticates from the city. Foreign students from exotic lands. And just plain folks. Friends come and go. The transiency hurts. As classes end, or people move across town, faces flow from familiarity back into vague anonymity. But some friends last. And when all is said and done, they are what is remembered. T he People 11
