Country Store brings back “good old days” From the time you walk through the door, it's a big step backwards into childhood and nostalgia. Cookies as big as your fist. A huge candy counter. And when you pay for your peppermint ice cream, complete with a sugar cone, you reach up to a counter as high as your shoulder to give your money to the smiling lady behind the ornate, massive handcranked cash register. The Country Store was born from a composite of employee, staff, student and faculty ideas according to Paul Scoggins, director of M.U. Food Services. “It really became a ‘family' effort. he said. “Whenever any of us had a little spare time, we’d take off and dredge through antique and secondhand stores or work on refinishing. The success of their efforts is apparent as treasures have been gathered from all over Oregon. The coffee and pastry counters came from Aurora and Dearborn. The potbellied stove originated in Alaska. Another bakery counter was acquired from Horner Museum. At lunch the meat, cheese, and fruit counter becomes a crowded place when students throng to pick out as much or as little as they want for a welcome change from hamburgers and french fries. F'or those a little less calorie-minded, there are gastronomic fountain delights, assorted gooey pastries, and miniature loaves of fruit and nut breads. Scoggins has received many enthusiastic comments from visitors. We just tried to recreate the feeling that so many of us remembered.” he added. And as we went on. it began to take on a personality all its own.” Just as in the good old days, the Country Store became a social gathering point and a welcome change from the everyday pace of things.
