and in the summer Through four undergraduate years, books are usually near at hand to remind us, even in our freer moments, that we have work to do. Books, of course, are not our only tools of study. On this scientific and technological campus organic and inorganic materials, apparatus and machines, and all manner of aids to teaching and learning are used. We deal with real things as well as read about them. We are tested for achievements and for aptitudes also. We find out what we can do best and choose our studies accordingly. But the man or the woman comes first. So we try also to make all we can of ourselves as individuals, regardless of profession. 5

We learn from each other because, even in the same class groups, one will always see something significant that others miss. We share ideals. We become fond of Alma Mater. We form ties that hold through life. 4

Day by day we share the fun that belongs to university life. In the role of students we engage in activities of many kinds that crowd evenings and weekends. Sometimes we create temporary new worlds to enjoy—a tropical isle, a pleasure yacht, a pioneer tavern, a cannibal feast, a fireman’s ball. In strange character and costume we feel at ease, forget ourselves, grow in the graces of social life, learn to know each other. Afterwards, when we have to settle down to study, we can do it better because of the fun we have had.
