The School of Home Economics celebrated its 60th anniversary in March of this year, with a total of 35,001 graduated students. Oregon State’s home economics department besides being one of the oldest in the West, is considered one of the best schools of its type in the United States. As well as preparing students to become efficient homemakers, mothers, and teachers, the department renders itself responsible in helping to develop a well-rounded personality, enabling a woman to deal with the problems of the ever changing modern world and her home, with its complex social and civic relationships. Dean Ava B. Milam, who has been supervising the department for many years, will retire at the end of this school year to enable her to carry on her work in foreign lands. RALPH COLBY, (Iran of lower division of liberal arts, has the important task of deciding the required subjects for undecided underclassmen. LEATHER CRAFT is only one of the many craft classes offered in original design in commercial art and craft subjects. THE PSYCHOLOGICAL PLACEMENT EXAMINATION is used as a basis for planning the student's educational and vocational program. For the Undecidet Non-specialized education at Oregor State is centered in the Lower Division of Liberal Arts. In cooperation with the School of Science, it offers a two-year curriculum of liberal studies. The Lower Division serves the student who wishes a broad general educatit for his preparation for intelligent citizenship. It serves the student who expects to specialize later in some field of arts and letters or social science, or who plans to follow a professional curriculum. The Lower Division of Liberal Arts serves not only its own enrollment, but every student in the college. It provides both lower and upper division courses to meet the needs of those enrolled in the technical and professional schools on the campus, supplying basic courses and liberal minors. It supports activities in art, music, journalism, dramatics, and public speaking whic enrich the college years and prepare for a fuller life. The aim of liberal education, stated very simply, being to help one ’understand himself and the world he lives in, the work in arts and letters and the social sciences offered by the Lower Division of Liberal Arts contributes largely to fitting the men and women of Oregon State College to become well-rounded individuals and responsible members of a free society. 30
