ACTUAL FIELD WORK in preparing men for forest manage men! and engineering is made possible by our nearness to the forest . Forestry in Three Divisions Our school of forestry is organized so men can learn to manage these valuable properties and to obtain the greatest production and economical distribution from them. In order to teach these men efficiently, the School of Forestry is divided in three main divisions— forest engineering, forest management, and forest products. The forest or logging engineer who is a native of our own Pacific Northwest, is trained in timber appraising, surveying of rough country, preparation of maps, location and construction of logging roads and plans, and in bridge design. Forest management is faced with two responsibilities: that of educating men to be of service in managing the national and state forests; also that of educating men to help in solving the problems of the forest industry. Lastly, forest products is concerned with teaching the student utilization of forest products, including a variety of manufacturing processes. This involves efficient plant design, organization and management, quality control, improvement and development of products, human efficiency, and scientific merchandising. Because of the proximity of the forests, the femhoppers are able to obtain actual experience in the field through their courses here at the college. 27 JIM IIAULEY, president of the Forester Club.

To Keep Oregon Green With an area of 28,000,000 acres of forest in the state, Oregon has a right to profess greater interest in forestry than any other state in the union. Oregon State has perhaps one of the best organized schools of forestry in the United States. Well-equipped modern buildings, woo chemistry labs, dry kiln, saw mill, and all the equipment used for “scientific forestry,” as well as 75,000 acres of forest itself, are placed at the disposal of OSC fernhoppers. By teaching these men more than mere conservation is not only helping in the advancement of the forestry industry, hut it also aids in keeping Oregon green. AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY AIDS the forester in mapping and surveyinic. “TREE I DENT” CLASSES teach the woodchoppers the principal Pacific Coast timber trees. 26
