Agriculture yields 400 million dollars cash to Oregon farmers each year. Field crops bring 162 million dollars. Fruit and nut crops bring 32 million. Berries and truck crops, used mostly for canning and freezing, bring 33 million. Forage seed crops bring 12'Yi million. Oregon also grows on a commercial scale many nursery and specialty crops: bulbs, drug crops, garlic, and seeds of many kinds. Cash income of the Oregon livestock industry is 180 million dollars. Milk yields 53 million, wool 2Vfc, poultry and eggs 37, fisheries 2Vz. This diversity of Oregon agriculture is made possible by the wide range of climate and topography. Great irrigation and drainage projects and almost universal use of power machinery expand production and profits. Ninety-five per cent of Oregon farms are electrified. The School of Agriculture at Oregon State college, the Agricultural Experiment Station with its eight branch stations and five experimental areas, and the state-wide Federal Cooperative Extension Service are dedicated to the advancement of Oregon agriculture and rural life. Man and nature—man with his vision and technologies; nature with her bounty of minerals, crops, and forests—these are the warp and woof.
