NATIONAL FOREST lookout stations guard against the menace of forest fires. The forest products industry, in Oregon, accounts for the livelihood of sixty per cent of its manufacturing population. Oregon produces, annually, more lumber than any other state. To contribute to the improvement of the industry Oregon State students in forestry take their places in this field. With knowledge of practical and theoretical forestry they apply their skill to the betterment and preservation of Oregon’s major industry. Forest fire prevention, sustained yield, and insect damage are but a few of the problems that the OSC forester is prepared to investigate. Adequate solution of these problems will come about through the efforts of technically trained graduates. Applying the scientific method to utilization of every inch of our forest giants the modem sawmill produces insulation material, broom handles, laminated panels, and many other specialty items as well as its normal lumber output. Manufacture of lumber and its by-products presents vocational opportunity to the business student in management, the science student in research, and the engineer in logging engineering. Oregon State college is doing its part in preparing men and women to take advantage of these opportunities and thus insure the permanence of forestry as Oregon’s foremost productive resource. 13 STANDING TIMBER comprise 28,000,000 acres of Oregon area.

Agriculture yields 400 million dollars cash to Oregon farmers each year. Field crops bring 162 million dollars. Fruit and nut crops bring 32 million. Berries and truck crops, used mostly for canning and freezing, bring 33 million. Forage seed crops bring 12'Yi million. Oregon also grows on a commercial scale many nursery and specialty crops: bulbs, drug crops, garlic, and seeds of many kinds. Cash income of the Oregon livestock industry is 180 million dollars. Milk yields 53 million, wool 2Vfc, poultry and eggs 37, fisheries 2Vz. This diversity of Oregon agriculture is made possible by the wide range of climate and topography. Great irrigation and drainage projects and almost universal use of power machinery expand production and profits. Ninety-five per cent of Oregon farms are electrified. The School of Agriculture at Oregon State college, the Agricultural Experiment Station with its eight branch stations and five experimental areas, and the state-wide Federal Cooperative Extension Service are dedicated to the advancement of Oregon agriculture and rural life. Man and nature—man with his vision and technologies; nature with her bounty of minerals, crops, and forests—these are the warp and woof. The product is the texture of Oregon life as we see it today with its “assurance of a magnificent tomorrow. J5
