Oregon’s majestic forests of Douglas fir, spruce, and ponderosa pine awe the beholder. A primary source of Oregon wealth, the state contains an area of twenty-eight million acres that may be permanently classified as forest land. Immense sawmills dot the forest area teeming with activity; as it has been described, “The river muffles the screech of saws as timber giants are turned into planks and shingles.” Evidence of extensive timber cutting can be seen in the cigar-like log rafts floating down swift flowing rivers to the mill. Though vast timber resources have been harvested, Oregon yet has the largest amount of standing timber possessed by any state. A policy of scientific utilization and timber replacement is being developed to perpetuate this precious heritage. Six out of every ten men employed in Oregon manufacturing are engaged in forest and forest products industries. Pulp, paper, and furniture making depend on Oregon timber. The forests are the main source of material for the state’s manufacturing. Oregon State college, through its School of Forestry, aids in preparing men for forest management, forest engineering, and the utilization programs for forest products. 11

NATIONAL FOREST lookout stations guard against the menace of forest fires. The forest products industry, in Oregon, accounts for the livelihood of sixty per cent of its manufacturing population. Oregon produces, annually, more lumber than any other state. To contribute to the improvement of the industry Oregon State students in forestry take their places in this field. With knowledge of practical and theoretical forestry they apply their skill to the betterment and preservation of Oregon’s major industry. Forest fire prevention, sustained yield, and insect damage are but a few of the problems that the OSC forester is prepared to investigate. Adequate solution of these problems will come about through the efforts of technically trained graduates. Applying the scientific method to utilization of every inch of our forest giants the modem sawmill produces insulation material, broom handles, laminated panels, and many other specialty items as well as its normal lumber output. Manufacture of lumber and its by-products presents vocational opportunity to the business student in management, the science student in research, and the engineer in logging engineering. Oregon State college is doing its part in preparing men and women to take advantage of these opportunities and thus insure the permanence of forestry as Oregon’s foremost productive resource. 13 STANDING TIMBER comprise 28,000,000 acres of Oregon area.
