“Water is power” says Oregon’s Governor Douglas McKay. Abundant rainfall not only keeps Oregon green but piles up in surging rivers an inexhaustible source of power. It has been said, “. . . the Columbia as the last major waterway discovered and developed in the United States, remains our youngest river. It is one of our last frontiers, still in the dawn of its impact on civilization.” The Columbia has more than one-fourth of the nation’s potential water power. Increase of available power and rapid population growth give opportunity and challenge to Oregon industry. More than four hundred and fifty new industries have started in the Portland metropolitan area. At the same time older industries have expanded. These developments, supplementing longer established industries resting on agriculture and forestry, provide greater economic stability for Oregon. Oregon State college, center of science and technology, has a vital relation to the growth of industrial Oregon. The School of Engineering and Industrial Arts, the School of Business and Technology, and the School of Science serve industry through instruction, research and extension. Under its federal and state charter the entire institution is devoted to serving the industries, and professions of life. 7
