Our purpose in high school is to become educated not only through studying and gaining knowledge but also through taking part in activities which help us grow in our readiness for entrance into the busy and ever-progressing world. Into this volume we have placed a record of these activities as some of the memories of our high school days never to be forgotten. We dedicate this book to the under-classmen, who still have many happy and profitable high school days ahead of them. But we dedicate this yearbook especially to the seniors, whose high school days have swiftly passed and who will soon know these clubs and other activities only as memories. Thus, that the memories of our high school activities may endure, we have recorded them in the Hes- perian, a treasure chest of memories of the school year 1957-58. During the past year the student council has aimed to advance the status of our school by more effective execution of its functions. One improvement of the council, which consists of the president, vice president, secretary, boys' repre- hai' 0-11 li., Joe Planton Vice President S-Q Bob Sack Secretary Becky Canon Elevator Editor T53 STUDENT 00N ll , ' -M 1 .- N57 1 i ,ei-in 'fi t .-.., sentative, girls' representative, editors and managers of the Hesperian and of the Ele- vator, was the addition of an inter-club council representative. The inter-club coun- cil was organized to bring the clubs of the school into closer contact with one another and to ease the financial burden of decorat- ing and improving the Pioneer Building for those clubs which sponsored social activities there during the school year. One of the major projects of the student council was to inform the students and their parents of the Oregon Youth Code. The council has work- ed hard to strengthen school spirit and to promote coherence of the students, faculty, and administration. We, the student council, wish to thank everyone, students and faculty alike, who have made our jobs easier during the past school year. .0111 A y 1 ,ww -, . et ' ' hyinsf r - J' I - are Maynard Buchmann Student Body President vs-'f -is pu Ed Serres Bailey Seida Carlene Johnson Inter-Club President Boys' Representative Girls' Representative . 1,-,Je x Nancy Hulse Marianna Koch Gayle Tschopp Elevator Manager Hesperian Editor Hesperian Manager 3 ? , K X HICUZTY 15 GV' fl Donovan, Affvndancr Clvrlz. As we, the seniors, gaze down the halls of our alma mater at this graduation time, we recall all the happy and never to be forgotten experiences of our high school days. We fondly remem- ber the formal dances, the basketball and football games, and the class plays, all of which have added much to our high school enjoyment. These events are now passed, but memories of them shall linger in our hearts forever. We shall soon enter the realm of the adult world. We shall miss the friendly classmates we have known and the teachers who have given us a helping hand on the road to knowledge. For now, all this is forming the past, and we look to the future. When I first came to this wonderful country, I was a little bit scaredg I didn't know very much English, and I didn't know anything about my American family. I didn't know if the students would accept me. But then, when I met all these nice and helpful people, I lost my fear and I enjoyed myself. I had the nicest year in school that I've ever had, and I owe it just to you, the students and the teachers. This year has been a wonderful experience for me, and you all helped a lot. I got to know quite a number of students from sophomores through juniors up to seniors, and I liked all of you very much. I mean it, too. We had a lot of fun together, and I thank you for whatever you did for me. Good-bye and I hope to see many of you over in Europe. Best of luck in everything you do. Because of the addition of two new teams to the league, the Pioneers will play each team only one game that will count in the league standings. This will necessitate the addition of several non-league teams to the schedule. The team will lack players of varsity experience as only three lettermen will return from last year. Bill Mahoney, who was na regular left fielder last year, has been moved to catcher. Bill is a real team player and hustles all the way. Ted Hendry, a letterman pitcher, has improved rapidly in the last year and is expected to be our pitching ace this season. The other letterman is Terry Kelsay, who has been moved from third base to shortstop. He is a good hitter and a fast base runner. The rest of the team will be made up of last year's Junior Varsity and some promising sophomores.
