FRY We salute Mr. Richard Fry upon his retirement from teaching with 27 years invested in the Orchard View system. Mr. Fry ' s career here can be compared to the building of a mighty skyscraper. Workers con- tinually work on the building. Soon, the tall skyscraper is up in the sky and no one can see the workers; but, the people on the ground can see the work progress- ing as floor after floor is completed toward the buildings final height. Through the years Mr. Fry has worked for Quality Education and sometimes, like the skyscraper construction workers, gone unno- ticed Richard has taught Science courses at the High School from its inception to the present day, and has taught Spanish these last four years. Behind the teaching scene Richard also has been involved with Orchard View students as a class advisor for 16 years. Drivers ' Education teacher and director for 25 years and yearbook advisor for years. We wish you well Mr. Fry and thank you for your contribution to this small place upon planet Earth called The Home Of The Cardi- nals. Mr. Fry was born and grew up in Roscoe, Ohio. He graduated from Roscoe High School. After working a year, Mr. Fry entered and later graduated from Olivet Nazarene College in Kankakee, Illinois. After graduation, Mr. Fry, his wife and daughter moved to Reddick, Illinois where he taught and coached for one year. Then in 1959, he started teaching in Orchard View Junior High when it was housed at the present Orchard View Elementary building. Later he became one of the first teachers at the then new Orchard View High School. Also during this time, a son was added to the family. While he was teaching at Orchard View, he obtained his Master ' s Degree from Michigan State University. During the course of his time at Orchard View, Mr. Fry has taught English, Biology, General Science, Drivers ' Training, Spanish and Yearbook. Hobbies that intereste him are: travel (He hopes to do this a lot!), golfing, bowling, reading and photography. The football field was full of mud. But our team pulled off a great up- set in the final seconds of the game. We beat the Spring Lake Lakers 13 to 7. Nerves were on edge as the ceremonies came closer and the rain threatened to move our Homecoming in- side. The rain stopped and we crowned our 1985 King, Howie Mortenson and our Queen, Shari Hall. Marci Chapman and Lisa Vines filled the other two starting spots. We have several talented ladies who will be ready to play aggressively next year and execute well. M - f ■■3B 1 jixsol The date is May 10. It ' s a warm evening. Cars pull up in groups, and students dressed in the finest formal attire step out into the night. Inside the YFCA building the party has just begun. Some will be celebrating the close of the schoolyear; some the end of school altogethe r. They intend to make the most of prom night. The girls form circles on the dance floor to compare dresses, while the guys take seats at the tables. They admire the decorations the junior class spent weeks preparing, (the underclassmen did a very fine job.) The D.J. decides it ' s time for the guys to dance, too. He backs off the tempo with a slow song, and the girls move in to capture their dates. The dance floor becomes filled with couples, only a few venture off the floor onto the terrace. Pictures are taken of couples who want to remember the prom, because the music will be over soon. The 1986 Orchard View Prom was a night to remember. POMP AND CIRCUMSTANCE — 1986 Seniors — Graduation night has finally come upon us. Tonight, we are not celebrating the end of high school, but rather, we are celebrating a new beginning in our lives. Any events that have occurred in high school are now just simply memories. It is time to move on. But I think it is only appropriate that we pay one final tribute to high school. Let ' s talk about Orchard View. Let ' s talk about the teachers. Some of our teachers have become our friends. They have readily answered most of our questions. And some of them had some very interesting habits: For example, never again will we have to hear one of Mr. Chupp ' s poems read over the intercom; never again will we have to hear another of Mr. Van Duinen ' s stimulating lectures; and, never again will we have to hear Mr. Saxe say Okay, the bell rang. All of us have participated in classroom activities at one time or another. When we did, we did it in uniform fashion. For example, whenever someone was called down to the office, all of us had to go, oooh. More importantly, because we acted in uniform fashion, O.V. accomplished many things this year. We won the Seaway Conference Championship in Wrestling, we collected the most pints of blood ever in this year ' s O.V. annual blood drive, the girl ' s basketball team had another outstanding year, and the football team did fine. All of a sudden, high school is over. There are no more shoulders to lean upon. There are no more people to grab onto in the hallway. But now, we face reality. Let me tell you the definition of reality. Reality is similar to running a maze. Each of us is a mouse placed in his own little maze. While in this maze, the mouse is constantly being timed by someone holding a stopwatch. Meanwhile, the mouse has to decide whether to go to th e left, to the right, to go straight ahead; and he has to decide as quickly as possible. He has to make his own decisions. Each mouse is responsible for finding that cheese at the end of the maze. If he does find that cheese, then the mouse has accomplished his goal. We all have our own goals, and have to do it on our own. Buchholz Distributors of Benjamin Moore Paints «ins=- HAPPY RETIREMENT Mrs. Beatrice Nobes Mrs. Nobes has been the only high school art teacher Orchard View has ever employed. She has been in the educational field for 28 years; 25 of those spent at OV. In 1945 Mrs. Nobes taught grade school at Muskegon. She took time off to be with her family, and later became a substitute teacher. I ' ve taught at every school in Muske- gon except two, she noted, But my real claim to fame during that time was earning a Masters Degree while having four young children at home; the youngest was only one year old. In 1961 Mrs. Nobes came to work at Orchard View. She devised the high school art program and initiated the annu- al Art Fair. She also set up the Middle School art room when the time came. When asked to reflect on her years at OV, she thoughtfully replied, Orchard View is a good school to work in; it ' s a school that reflects the times. I ' ve been fortunate to have had some terrific students in my classes here. After retirement Mrs. Nobes plans to do some flea mar- keting with her husband William, who retired from his job with the City of Muskegon four years ago. And I ' d like to do more painting, She added, Maybe take a painting class, and possibly travel a bit. I ' ll cotinue housecleaning and the necessary things, along with some volunteer work, but I ' m going to rest awhile too. If something great comes along — I ' ll just do it. (And that is what retirements all about.) Mrs. Quarto Mr. Joyce Quarto Mrs. Quarto has been a guidance counselor at OV for 23 years. Mrs. Quarto started her career in education as an elementary music teacher at Wolf Lake School. Music has always been important to her and after retiring this Spring, it will again be emphasized in her life. Mrs. Quarto will be organist at Our Lady of Grace Church. She will also be a substitute organist at other churches, and will play at wed- dings and funerals. I ' ve always played, she reminisced, I played funerals when I was only ten. In 1 962 and 1 963 Mrs. Quarto taught physical education at Jolman Elementary School and was also a guidance coun- selor there. In the fall of 1963 she began work at the high school. Mrs. Quarto ' s husband Nick has been retired from the Muskegon Intermediate School District for two years. They have three grown children and three grandchildren. f m ; g.M.g.g.g.l.l.g.M.H.g.i 48 State Common Carrier R S Truck Leasing Margaret J. Smith President 1651 Walker Rd.
