A log school house was erecfed by fhe members of fhe Sociefy of Friends, who were commonly called Quakers, on fhe sife where now sfands fhe home of Alberf Bush, on fhe norfheasf corner of Easf Quaker Sfreef and Norfh Freeman Road. For fhree years, sefflers had been arriving from Massachuseffs and Vermonif in considerable numbers, and, while a few of fhem locafed in whaf is somefimes called fhe Newl'on Neighborhood , fhe largesf parf of fhem fook up land and builf fheir homes in fhe neighborhood of whaf is now Easf Quaker Sfreef and Freeman Road. Many problems confronfed fhese sefflers. The land was fhickly covered wifh frees wifh only an occasional clearing of a few acres. Herds of deer roamed fhe foresf, bears were plenfiful, and af nighf fhe bark of fhe wolf, fhe scream of fhe panfher, and fhe snarl of fhe wildcaf were frequenfly heard. Thousands of birds, including fhe wild furkey, eagle, and hawk, filled fhe frees, 'fhe blacksnake and rafflesnake were common under foof. The firsf greaf fask was fhe clear- ing of fhis land in order fo provide a place for fhe planfing of crops and for fhe pasfuring of animals. Nof fhe leasf of fhe problems was +ha+ one having fo do wifh fhe educafion of fheir children. Mosf of fhem, coming from New England where an educafion was considered of greaf imporfance, had received af leasf fhe benefif of a common school fraining, and some of fhem were fairly pro- ficienf in some of fhe more advanced subiecfs. Therefore, fha esfablishmenf of a school in which fheir children would be faughf fhe elemenfary subiecfs of reading, wrifing, arifh- mefic, spelling, and geography, and grammar, if nofhing more, was considered of fhe ufmosf imporfance. To fhaf end, fhe liffle log school house was buill' - fhe firsf school building fo be erecfed in Erie Counfy soufh of Buffalo. Abouf one hundred feef easf of fhis schoolhouse sfood fhe Quaker Meefing House which was builf of logs, and fhis Quaker Meefing House was.fhe firsf religious edifice 'lo be builf in Erie Counfy.
