THE ORIOLE Dedication 2 Staff 3 Elementary 7 Junior High 15 Senior High 21 Organizations 33 Fine Arts 37 Athletics 51 Royalty 65 Seniors 71 Honors 83 Advertisers 87 Dedication The Annual Staff proudly dedicates the 1977 yearbook to Mr. Allen W. Richter. Mr. Richter joined the Orchard Public School system in 1969 as music director. During his eight years in our school, he designed and implemented a K 6 elementary music curriculum, instructed K-12 vocal music, 5-12 instrumental music, music theory and music arranging. Mr. Richter is accredited with starting a stage band in 1969 and a swing choir in 1970, as well as helping produce three broadway musicals; L’il Abner,” Calamity Jane, and Any- thing Goes” with pit orchestras. The O.H.S. band and chorus traveled many, many miles to perform at clinics, parades, music contests and celebrations — often with Mr. Richter as bus driver. One highlighted band trip was to Rapid City, South Dakota, for the International Dakota Days Celebration where the band, instructor and sponsors camped out for a week in the Black Hills. Mr. Richter describes this experience as (quote) A gas! In addition to his musical duties at O.H.S., Mr. Richter helped several senior classes raise money for “sneak and sponsored their trips. Some junior classes were also under his sponsorship raising money to put on Jr.-Sr. Proms. He was the 1975-76 student council advisor and co-sponsor of the National Honor Society. Mr. Richter also held offices in the Orchard Teacher’s Association. Mr. Richter took an active interest in Orchard’s activities. He helped charter a cub scout pack and served as its cubmaster and webelos leader for three years. He was a charter member of the Orchard Lions Club (he still boasts the loudest roar) which sponsored many youth projects since 1970, and was active in the Lutheran church. His hobbies include hunting, fishing, boating, woodworking, model airplane building and flying with his son. gardening and general fix-it puttering. We all remember his expertise at repairing mangled wire-rim med glasses! Even with all of these duties and activities, Mr. Richter always seemed to have time to talk with and guide his many students. He will long be remembered for his genuine interest and concern. Mr. Richter is presently working toward a Ph.D. in Music Education, at the University of Iowa, Iowa City Iowa. We wish him all of the best for many more years of successful teaching. 2 — Orchard Annual Staff — School Board And Administration SEATED: Karl Asch, Secretary; Burnell Von Seggern, President; David Willats, Vice President; STANDING — Harry Johnston, Treasurer; Marvin Haswell, Duard Dempster. Junior - Senior Prom “COLOR MY WORLD” was the theme of the 1977 Junior-Senior Prom held Friday, May 6. The gym decorations consisted of a large rain- bow mural, wishing well and pastel colored streamers designed and put up by the junior class. The stage was decorated with glittered panels. The evening began with a welcome by the junior class president, John Pruss. A delicious dinner prepared by the class mothers was served by a group of sophomore students. Following the dinner the sophomore servers presented a humorous skit. Mr. Jeff Hendersen, Mr. Randy Hendersen, and Denise Dempster provided musical entertainment followed by the reading of the class wills by Dave Asch and Kathi Pearson. The program concluded with the reading of the prophecies by John Pruss and Steve Strope. “Quazy” provided music for the dance which followed the banquet. 1 Annual Staff FIRST ROW: Sally Wilson. Her Orchard family was Mr. and Mrs. Duard Dempster, Tom, Denise, and Michelle. American Government, Math IV, Art I, Chorus, Speech, Office Practice, and Library made up Silvana’s class schedule. She also participated in girls’ basketball. In addition to her school life at Orchard, she enjoyed the typical high school social activities. Silvana rated the parties; the food; the music; and the people here tops! All of the students enjoyed Silvana’s stay in Orchard. It was not unusual to walk into the cafeteria, library, or study hall and see a group of students exchanging thoughts and ideas with Silvie” right in the middle. Her sense of humor warmed the hearts of elementary, junior high and senior high students alike. In April, Silvana returned to her family, Mr. and Mrs. Jairo Alencar Araripe, in Fortaleza, Brazil, where she plans to continue her education. .1 Rocio’ Martinez came to Orchard in August, 1976. Her Nebraska family was Mr. and Mrs. Harold Meyer, Marla and Jon. Her school schedule consisted of Typing, Home Economics IV, Girl’s Shop, Spanish. Chorus, and Office Practice. In addition she was a member of the Spanish Club. The Spanish classes especially enjoyed having Rocio here at O.H.S. since Spanish is her native language. In her leisure time, Rocio liked ice-skating, motorcycling, bike-riding, and playing ping-pong. The senior class made her a part of all of the activities on their busy senior schedule.” Rocio graduated from O.H.S. and in June returned to her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gabriel Martinez, four brothers and two sisters in Mexico City, Mexico. She plans to become a secretary. Masumi Takahashi, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Isao Takahashi, joined her Nebraska family, Mr. and Mrs. Veldon Godel, Kelley and Marci, in the fall of 1976. Compared to her large home city, Asahikawa, Japan, her Nebraska farm life seemed “peculiar but wonderful.’’ Her schools days were spent in the following classes: Music Theory, Art I, Home Economics IV, Girl’s Shop, Speech, Chorus and Journalism. Masumi also was on the volleyball team. Masumi enjoyed playing piano and taking pictures in her spare time. While in school, several classes were fortunate to have Masumi come into their rooms and teach them how to write and pronounce their names in Japanese, as well as how to do origami — the art of paper folding. The younger students folded paper animals and boats under her instruction. Masumi graduated from O.H.S. and plans to continue her education in America. She will be attending college in Provo, Utah, majoring in music. 76 Commencement Valedictorian Kathi Pearson Salutatorian Davis Asch 78 Senior Sneak Senior Summaries DAVID KENT ASCH Football 1; Basketball 1-2-3-4; Track I 2-3; Football 2-3-4; Junior Class Play 3; Musical Pit Band 1, Class Officer 3-4; Spanish Club 3-4; Annual Staff 3; Speech 1-2-3-4; 0 Club 3; Student Council 1-3-4; National Honor Society 2- 3-4; Band 1-2-3-4; Chorus 1-2; Sax Quintet 3; Stage Band 2-3-4; Pep Band 3; Sax Solo 3-4; Chadron Contest 2-3-4; State Speech Contest 4.
