PIPE DREAM Class Prophecy QTaken from the dlary of Nancy Daughenbaugh and read at the fifteenth reumon of the class of 6 The Vanlshmg Cnmmal Wednesday March 10 1960 2 45 a m Just had a call from Anna Parson There had been an accident reported at Rlttman Avenue near the home of Mrs Glenn Bowman CMarlene PFICCD We arrnved at the scene of the acctdent at 300 a m only to fmd Patrolman Duane Brown questlonmg some of the wltnesses who rn cluded Audrey Burdge Glenn Clark Mary Par son Lee Gray Nancy Stemnger and Dale Ment zer We were mformed by Patrolman Brown that thts was a htt and run case A 59 Chevro let had struck head on wrth the ear of Mr and Mrs Wendell Glunt QV1ola Bensonj who were returnmg from an evenmgs entertamment gxven by Mr and Mrs Jlm Moore CMary Crousej Patrolman Paul McMullen who was also present mformed us that Shrrley Carruthers an occupant of a near by apartment had wrtnessed the acctdent and called an ambulance Frve minutes later the ambulance arrtved drlven by Eugene Flood Marlene Kaylor R N and Dr Eugene Parson were with htm We followed them to the hosprtal and were greeted by the receptionist Nancy Daughen baugh who told us the numbers of the rooms to which the patnents were to be admttted We were surpnsed to fmd an old classmate Gerald Wrnnlck operating the elevator whlch took us to the thlrd floor where we awaited the arrrval of the doctor and patnent from the emergency operating room Finally they arrtved wlth the nurses aldes CBeryl Peterson and Fawn Gabertj and we were mformed that Mrs Glunt had suf fered a serious foot Injury lt was feared that she mnght lose her toe We dectded that we would personally fmd the person who was the cause of this sertous accldent md brlng htm to yustrce Leavmg the hospltal we Immediately went to the pollce statron where the Chtef of Pollce was questnonmg two of the wttnesses Audrey Burdge and Dale Mentzer They told us the Incense number the color of the car and de scribed the drlver Because of the hour we had to walt untll the followmg morning to start our mvestxgatron We went to the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue and checked the ltcense number there we learned that the owner of the ear was Thrrty four Fred Robinson We contacted htm and found that hrs car htd been stolen the prevlous nrght but he h tdn t reported ll to the proper authorltles Reahzmg that thus 5llUdllOH was becommg too eompllcated for us to handle alone we de crded to call '1 private detective to help us De tecttve Harold McMullen stated that the ftrst step was to check all servlce statlons ln the V1 emnty to see rf any one had brought rn such a car to be servtced He sent us to a large statlon where an nuto mechanlc CGerald Jenklnsl told us that a man had been there several hours be fore with such x car Gerald descrlbed the drlver to us as a slx foot three person with blond halr wetghmg about one hundred slxty pounds S we took htm wtth us to the poltce station to see the mug book He tentatrvely 1dent1f1ed the man thus we had our fxrst clue Where could we fmd hlI1l7 After hearing that he had been seen on the other stde of town entering a doctors offrce we requested a poltceman 1n a squad car to check on the up The doctor Cwho was Robert Wtlson Ill mformed us that such a person had been nn that mornmg to be treated for a fractured fmger so we dectded to search the vtcmtty fur ther for his whereabouts The flrst house we came to was the home of Kenny Kephart a famous basketball star who could glve us no help whatever We then went to vtslt How :rd Rogers Ca catche for the Brooklyn Dodgers! and his nelghbor Warren Shope Q1 pitcher for the New York Yankeesj Neither had seen hnde nor halr of the suspect On the way b ack to the squad car we met Robert Wnlson l 1 famous football player at U C L A After he trlng our story he told us that he had seen a man of that descrlptton earlier that morn Ing at the loc tl atr port We decided to check the flnght schedule at once to see whether or not the suspect might have made reservations When we arrrved at the anr port we met Sam Regt a ptlot and Charles Really his co ptlot who were scheduled to fly the next plane to San Francisco Of course we explained our mtsslon to them hopmg they would give us some helpful suggesttons They told us where we mught obtain the tnformatron we destred but we met wrth no success We continued on our way to the mam butldmg There we met Doris Wal ters 1 hostess for the out gomg fltght She sug gested that we contact Colonel James Lynn as she was qulte sure that he could gtve us the lnformatlon we needed no U9 1 ' , ' - s 1 ' 1 . . y 1 a .1 1 1 ' . .
