F. F. A. News The Orangeville Chapter of Future Farmers of Americahas fifty-nine members this year: Fifteen Greenhands, forty-one Chapter Farmers, and three State Farmers. The members elected the following officers for 1955-56: President, LaVerne Barkerg Vice President, Gary Rote, Treasurer, Marvin Dunaway, Secretary, Dick Rote, Re- porter, Gary Koehnerg Sentinel, Rodney Frank. Four members from our chapter re- ceived the State Farmer Degree in June, 1955, bringing our total to forty-three. Those honored were LaVerne Barker, Gary Rote, Ed Enzinger, and Larry Heck. Winners of chapter awards were as follows: Sheep, Gary Koehner, Swine, Bill Schwarzeg Beef, Ed Enzinger, Corn, Larry Heck, Poultry, Eugene Gross, Farm Mechanics, Harry Bowen, Soil and Water Management, Steve Switzer. Honorary Degrees were awarded to Mr. Lee Barker and Mr. John Babler at the Father and Son Banquet in November, 1955. Mr. Barker is the father of our FFA President, LaVerne, and Mr. Babler is the father of the first State Farmer from the Orangeville Chapter. Sharon Freese was selected by the chapter members as 1955-56 Chapter Sweet- heart. Later in the year she will compete with other Sweethearts in the section for Section I FFA Sweetheart. Robert Schulz was selected 1955 Sectional and State winner in Dairy Project work in Illinois. Robert and his parents were recognized at the State Convention at Springfield in June. He participated in the International Dairy Parade in Chicago where he rode in a convertible decorated for the occasion. Later in the day he was guest at a luncheon. He also received an all expense paid trip to Toronto, Canada to the Canadian Livestock Show. In 1955 the Dairy Judging Team placed second in the District Contest. The team members are LaVerne Barker, Steve Switzer, Bill Schwarze, Elwin Foss, and Albert Bilgri. Alternates were LaVerne Solace, Rodney Frank, and Norman Kundert. The Crop Judging Team, which consists of Donald Kaiser, Gerry Rinehart, Jim Price, Bill Toepfer, and Steven Buehler, placed seventh in the section. Another seventh place was taken by the Fat Stock JudgingTeam. Members are Marvin Dunaway, Eugene Gross, Gary Koehner, Harold Grindey, Dick Rote, with alternates Larry Bear and Gary Rote. Marvin Dunaway also placed fifth in individual scoring. Chapter members have a dairy herd improvement project with herds in the school district on test. Testing are LaVerne Barker, Rodney Frank, Albert Bilgri, Eugene Gross, Rote Brothers, Robert Schulz, Robert Bessert, Richard Meinert, Edward Busjahn, Brian Brinkmeier, Daryl Sweetwood, LaVerne Shippy, Dwight Hull, and Dick DeHaven. Other activities in which the chapter participated during the past year included a corn picker safety campaign, pest eradication program, in which 3,253 pests were killed, county tractor rodeo for FFA members in October, five schools participating, Father and Son Banquet in November with guests, and a course in Fire Prevention. We also had a swimming class at the Y.M.C.A. in Freeport during February and March, and are planning this recreation again in 1956. FFA

In the fall a.nd the spring we have meetings after school n F W where we play basketball, football, softball, volleyball, and 1 , ' sometimes have relays. The purpose of our club is to foster a co-operative spirit in girls' recreation. Each summer we send two sophomores to GAA camp which is held at Conference Point in Williams Bay, Wisconsin.
