SENIOR MEMBERS-Lett to right, tirst row: Kinsey: Muttsp Bryant: Gramling: Lalrc: Clarlrrq Robinson. Sr-cond row: Sims: Thurmond: Super: Salleyq Blount: Bradbury: Bruner, Manager. As impressive as this seven and three record is, it talres on added signiticance when it is con' sidered that graduation stripped eight starters and several reserves from the strong 1948 grid machine. Thus a tribute is paid to the time coaching abilities ot Bill Clarlc and 'iBuclro'i Edens and the coopera tion and spirit ot the players as they worlced together to produce lrom relatively inexperience material a powerful, tighting club. FOOTBALL SUMMARY OF VARSITY FOOTBALL Facing one of the stittest schedules in the state the lndians reported for practice in mid-August with eleven lettermen and squad men returned from last yearis team along with a host of newcomers. After three weeks of intense practice, l-lead Coach Bill l COACHES AND COACAPTNNS: Head Coach, W. J. Bill Clark: Assistant Coaches, T. A. Bucko Edens and E. L, 'Patel' Way. Co-Captains, Johnny Jumbo Gramling and Vernon Vi-ronicall Lakv. Clark and Coach Bucko Edens picked their varsity and began molding a light but determined bunch of Indians into a well oiled, smooth-running split TH machine. ln the season curtain raiser, the Redskins racked up a 27-T3 win over the powerful St. Matthews Yel- low Jackets, and the next week they captured a thrilling i3-6 victory from the Georgetown Gators. The lndians then took to the road for their next two games. The Charleston Bantams edged a fighting Orangeburg team 7-6 in the last minute of play. Journeying to Greenville the next week, the lndians bounced back to hand the Greenville Red Raiders a 7-O set-back. Aiken and Florence were knocked off in quick succession by scores of 26-7 and T8-O. After a weekis rest, the Redskins pulled a Q6-T4 victory out of the tire to down Dreher of Columbia in the homecoming game before meeting the undefeated Sumter Gamecocks. In a ferocious battle that saw Orangeburg lead 7-O at the half Sumter rallied to win T3-7. After another rest of a week the Indians tangled with their arch rival, Laurens: and striking with lightning fury, they blasted the Tigers 40-7. Winding up the season, Orangeburg dropped a T4-7 decision to Camden on Thanksgiving.
