Manual Training The Manual Training DeparTmenT was TirsT sTarTed in I9l3 by E. R. Forbes. Wood Shop and Mechanical Drawing were The subjecTs TirsT oTTered. The whole TirsT Tloor of The presenT Commercial Building was originally planned and used Tor shop purpose. There were 40 or 50 sTudenTs ThaT Took This work The TirsT year iT was oTTered. In I9l4 anoTher Teacher, Mr. C. l-l. PeTTiT, was added To The Teaching Torce of This deparTmenT. l-le divided his Time beTween wood work and drawing. Forge Shop was oTTered This year, and The shop was locaTed in The NorTh basemenT room oT The Commercial Building. The enrollmenT had grown To The exTenT ThaT Two Tull Time Teachers were required To handle The work. This Type oT work was new in This parT oT The counTry, and as a resulT mosT oT The boys in The school elecTed The work. So much inTeresT in The work was shown, ThaT iT was indeed a raTher diTTiculT Task Tor The Teachers To geT away Trom The shops each evening unTil nearly dark, and The TirsT Thing SaTurday mornings There were usually a number OT boys ThaT would rouse The Teacher oui' oT bed in order ThaT They mighT have a Tull days work aT The shops. ln l9l5 machine shop work was TirsT offered. The norTh wesT basemenT room OT The commercial building was TiTTed up Tor This work. When This course was TirsT oTTered, There was a demand Tor some auTo repair work, and iT was an amusing and inTeresTing sighT To see The way ThaT auTomobiles were goTTen down in The machine shop. These machines had To be Taken down Through The double doors on The easT end oT The basemenT. By removing boTh doors Trom The hinges and placing heavy boards over The sTeps, The machines were run in and ouT on Their own power. These occasions were noT as TrequenT as in laTer years Tor auTos were noT quiTe so numerous, and The parenTs were a liTTle more parTicular abouT The Fords oT Those days Than They are oT The beTTer cars oT Today. By l9l6 The enrollmenT oT The school had increased enough Tor The disTricT To run buses Tor sTudenT TransporTaTion. So in I9I7 The TronT halT oT The presenT shop building was To house The machine shop, Torge shop, and The school buses. The insTrucTors and The boys did all oT The repairing on The buses, unless a break down ThaT would lay up The bus Too long occurred. When This happened,an ouTdde mechamc wascaHed h1To hdp speed up Hungs In I9l9 Mr. Campbell Took The place vacaTed by Mr. PeTTiT. Mr. Campbell TirsT TaughT wood work and mechanical drawing. ln l923 or I924 a course in auTo mechanics was oTTered. Mr. S. O. STanTield had charge oT This work unTil iT was disconTinued. By l924 The school had grown To such an exTenT ThaT addiTional class rooms were needed To accommodaTe The sTudenTs. As The rooms occupied by The wood shop and mechanical drawing could be uTilized Tor class rooms, wiTh very liTTle expense, ii' was suggesTed ThaT addiTional rooms be builT on The shop building, To house The enTire deparTmenT under one roof. This suggesTion was ThoughT kindly oT by The Board,Torin l924-The second or easT haH oTThe shops buHding was erecTed and aH of The shops were moved To Their presenT locaTion. In l926 Mr. Livernash was added To The Teaching Torce, as Mr. Campbell was on leave oT absence. ln I'-728 Mr. Campbell again ioined The Teaching Torce and has been Teaching Torge shop and mechanical drawing. The shops oT This deparTmenT have had a sTeady growTh and new equipmenT has been added as The enrollmenT increased. Today we have as well equipped shops as any Town oT like size in The sTaTe. The insTrucTors Teel ThaT all of The boys in The school will be beTTer equipped To Tigh+ liTe's baTTles iT They have been exposed To some oT The pracTical work oTTered by This deparTmenT. 1932-1933111 1117 ff., T, my ' '51' 11, fs ihdf rr 35:1 :fg .F T - S' s f , Q' ET' Q HE? lp' L 3 ,J .F ,Z xl?
