' uf., 41 u Fighting Football Lions Display Great No trophies, no championship, but a job well done and a glimmer of hope for the future are the results of the Orange High Lions' 1956 football season. Beginning with one of the greenest groups of boys it has ever had to handle, the coaching staff at Orange begins work, teaching and striving to produce a successful sea- son. Nervous and anxious, the Lions traveled to Chagrin to begin their season in the annual Round Robin games. Having played well, but hampered by a split-moment touchdown pass, the team traveled home over- shadowed by a 6-0 defeat, but looking forward to another week and another game. Their faith was not in vain, for the next weekend brought brighter results as the local Lions handed Cuyahoga Heights an 18-0 de- feat. But victory was not lasting as the next two games were to prove. Riding high the Orangemen encountered a fired-up North Royalton team and, as once before, the Hnger of fate pushed the Lions down in a close battle, 18-12. Yet bright as hopes were, the end of trouble was not in sight, as a big and bulky Brooklyn team downed the mignty Lions in a 23-6 encounter, the score not in- dicating the close game that was played. Morale again began to build as the thrill of homecoming took hold on every student in the school: and midst the pageantry and tradition of this eventful day the Lions emerged victorious, handing a 20-13 defeat into the hands of the Brecksville Bees. But again the honors of victory did not stay as the Lions met a strong Solon team and fell by a .score of 18-7 the following week. A stadium filled to capacity, a cool night, and an over-anxious Orange team and crowd characterized the next Friday night game with Wlarrensville Heights. Rumors had traveled to Orange that the boys would never play the same without the transfer Warrensville students, and this was the game in which the Lions would have to prove their worth. That they did, for in one of the hardest fought games all season the Lions repelled the over-rated lN'arrensville team 19-12. This game was to be our team's last rewarded effort as they were later beaten by Mayfield and Chagrin 26-13, and 1-l-0 respectively. However. the second half of the last game with the Chagrin Tigers was said to be the best the team had played all year. So the season closed, yet it will long be remembered by many, especially by Leo Matthews, all-county guard and the most efficient lineman of Orange: Paul Bailey, rotary cup winner for the most valuable player in the Orange-Chag- rin game: Al Tretera, most eliicient back of Orange: and by Tommy Thomas, most valuable defensive player of our fair school. Our team was not a winner as far as the scores and games are concerned, but a winner in l tic games of sportsmanship and manly honor. Yes, the memories of a season well-played. will linger on for it's the fans and the fun, along with the players and the coaches, the spirit of the school, and the yearning for competition that make the game of football what it is in America today! Although not as formidable a powerhouse during the 1956-57 campaign as it had been for three previous seasons. the Orange Lions under head coach Bob Greenwood and assistants, Bill Larkins and lVayne Peter- son, nevertheless displayed the colorful basketball that seems to be customary with teams coached by Mr. Greenwood. The Lions wind up the season with an overall mark of ten wins and nine losses. Their conference record of 5-3 placed them second in the league behind Hrst place. neighboring Chagrin Falls. For years the Varsity 6'0 Club has been considered an active and distinctive organization at Orange High. It is composed of boys who have received letters upon participation in the school's varsity sports: basketball. football, golf, and track. Yet the story of qualifica- tions does not end there, for before a letter-winner may become a member, he must pass an initiation. This usually means becoming a slave, washing cars. and making a complete fool of himself before the day is over. Yet in the end every member says, alt is worth it. The club elects officers during its first meeting. As the ballots are counted, Leo Matthews has been elected president, Chuck Rini, vice president, Bill Sayle, secretary, and Chuck Lewis, trea- surer. Under the guidance of these fine men, much has been ac- complished. In November a tip-off dance was sponsored by the Varsity ON and the basketball season was officially recognized. Other than danc- es the club sponsors two paper drives a year, sells programs, helps the needy, and promotes good behavior at all games. The sweater of a Varsity O man is recognized and respected, for the wearer is not only an athlete and a worker, but he is also a gentleman. thletics All, We Strive for embership STANDING: A. Moments to Remember Live in the Or-an 'B x Q- if -2'-z, Go-editors, Diane Schaffer and Paula Sample, make some last minute changes on layouts. i'Where is the Junior Class copy? Who mislaid the pic- ture of the basketball team? When is our next deadline: Will we meet it?'l These familiar questions are frequently heard in the halls of OHS as the 1957 Or-an staff works frantically to complete this year's memory book. Giving both a written and a pictoral coverage of the academic, social, and co- curricular life at Orange, the Or-an preserves many mem- ories of school life. In order to complete the book the staff spent numerous, long hours after school searching for themes, designing layouts, typing stories, tagging pictures, photo- graphing groups, and writing and rewriting copy. Louise Podojil suggested the open door theme which the staff selected as the theme of the 1957 edition. K'We planned carefully, we worked diligently, and eventually we made it, exclaim the staff members as the book is finally sent to press. It gives ninth graders the chance to decide if they wish to remain in the commercial course of study for the next three years. In senior high, business students enroll in typing, shorthand, and bookkeeping. Basic typ- ing, a one-semester course, is a must before graduation for all college-prep students. Bookkeeping covers the prin- ciples of debit and credit as they apply in the double entry system. In this class students gain the practical experience of completing a set of books for a retail grocer. Girls who volunteer for office assistant positions re- ceive much practical knowledge. They type the dummy copies and cut stencils for Highlights, they duplicate and mimeograph material for teachers, they handle corre- spondence, and they do some filing. One of their major projects this year was addressing and stuffing envelopes for the bond levy drive last fall. if Jerome Fitz Wayne Peterson Business Education Drix er Education .,a.,, V ,,,. .,., , . ta., y t iwgjwflrw.
