THE GRIDIRO T0llY The Lion's shifty, fleet backs, behind a hard-charging forward wall, ran roughshod over all opponents this year to win their fourth consecutive East County title. The team produced a new scoring record for the school with 319 points in the eight-game season. This was an average of 40 points a game compared with the 5-point average of Orange's opponents. ln the past four years Orange has won thirty-two games and lost two. Let's all hop aboard the 'Orange Express and travel back into history to review the 1951 championship football season. Starting off at the home station we were hosts to Brooklyn-not too genial hosts, though, for we sent them packing with a 45-19 defeat for their opener, The next week we rock- eted into Willoughby on a hot, sweltering afternoon. The affair started slowly, but with Larry Chesnik staking the boiler with three touchdown passes, Orange steamed away from the field of battle a 42-0 victor. Chug- ging into Cuyahoga Heights the following Friday evening, we had Bill Kieger in the engineer's spot for the big one. Engineer Kieger really ran this show, his brilliant play and three touchdowns gained him the title of Press Star of the Week. Final score: Orange 27, Heights 6. The Orange Express spent the following week in the roundhouse prepar- ing for the bombardment of Comets from Solon which was scheduled to arrive at 3:30 on October 5th. The aerial display failed to come off, how- ever, for Orange walloped the Solon Comets 41 -6. We celebrated our second Independence Day of the year with a 61-6 victory over the Blue Devils at their field. The Express rolled into Brecksville on October 18th at 8:00 P.M. lt began to look as if the Brecksville jinx was working again, the game began slowly, but the Lion attack finally began to function. Orange left the field'with a 40-0 win over the Bees despite the absence of senior left tackle, George Lloyd, from the lineup. Lloyd was out for the remainder of the season because of an injured knee. On October 26th the football special travelled to Chagrin Falls. The Orange Lions, on the wrong end of a 6-0 score after the first two quarters, raised a full head of steam in the second half to beat the scrappy Tigers 18-6 in a rough-and-tumble contest. Riding on the crest of a seven-game winning streak, Orange overpowered a scrappy Mayfield squad 45-0 in the final game of the season. As the Orange Express, having completed a record run, fades into the distance, we find the brain-trust of the team-coaches Walter Smith, Bob Greenwood, and John North-on the observation platform laying plans for the coming season.
