I 0 I 0 Three years ago Orange Glen High School was cn mere structure lacking in traditions, goals and achievements. Gradually our school began to ex- pand and take its future shape. As the years pro- gressed the student body showed increasing spirit and continued to make Orange Glen a school of which they could be proud. Much of the credit for these advancements is due to the students whose hard work and leadership transformed a few build- ings into a united body, strong, willing and ready to spur forward. Graduating this June are many of the students, who diligently and conscientiously strived to fill Orange Glen with bursting spirit and high honors. To you seniors, in view of all you have done to make our school a privilege to attend, we dedicate the 1965 Torch . X r u l lg if V iv Ft , ff U xv, -l- , , ,N V . .761 ll' 1 'yi VJ i X x it iw . I S I T455 Q' LAK l .L Q 4 chan fcfixf' 7 -7:9 ,- -g Dear Students, Quite often the criticism is voiced that the teen- ager of today does not follow a worthy set of goals, is a carefree and careless individual living a day to day existence, is a selfish individual with no thought given to the welfare of his fel lowman or to the coun- try which has given him so much. These same criti- cisms were advanced fifty years ago, a hundred years ago and, yes, even several hundred years ago. The criticism of today's teenagers is as questionable now as it was in the past. lt is true that a certain small percentage of stu- dents in our own district fall into the category de- scribed in the preceding paragraph. However, those working closely with students realize that the per- centage is small and that the vast majority of students are striving to achieve and live by a worthy set of goals. As evidence we point with pride to the achievements, attitudes, spirit of cooperation and self-discipline of our students which is worthy of commendation in every respect. We are proud of your records and achievements. We especially congratulate members of the Class of '65 for their leadership during the past four years. Regards, G. W. Quade G. W. Quade District Superintendent SEATED: William M. Kennedy, Dr. Ward C. Sangren. STANDING: Chester E. Galyean, Colley Jeffers, Wilbur F Bradley Jr Mr. Patrick V. Ross Principal Shall we give them 10 or 15? Growth and progress have been the hallmark of 1965. Growth in population and the means to support these millions, growth in the opportunities afforded all Americans to live together with greater respect for human dignity and greater tolerance for human shortcomings. We have seen great pro- gress in the sciences, a renewed appreciation for the arts, indeed, we have seen progress in every area of man's endeavor. Growth and progress are, likewise, the hallmark of Orange Glen High School. Recall that just three short years ago, Orange Glen High School opened its doors to a student body of iust under four hun- dred and fifty students. Our new campus was filled to capacity and there was much work to be done. We now have a student population of iust over ten hundred and fifty. Our campus is filled to capacity and there is still much work to be done . The task before us, however, will be accomplished! The dedication and demonstrated excellence of the class of 1965 will serve as a standard and an incen- tive to all future Patriots . lt is with a deep sense of pride and gratifi- cation that I extend congratulations and bid fare- well to the young ladies and gentlemen of our first graduating class. l am confident that your pursuit of excellence will continue throughout your lives. Pair bf Gridder In every football season there is always one game that people remember as the most thrilling. This season, the game at Vista High School turned out to be the most outstanding. The Patriots entered this game as under-dogs, however at the end of the contest the Pats were out in front, 7-6, due to tremendous determination and spirit. The Patriots started out the season on more or less the right foot when they battled Poway to a scoreless tie. However, in the second contest, powerful Lincoln of San Diego traveled to Memorial Field for another game that will live in the eyes of Patriot rooters for years to come. The Pat's again were dubbed as heavy under-dogs, and eventually succumbed to the more experienced and faster Lincoln Homets by a score of 20-6, however not before staging one of the best fights in the short history of Orange Glen. Orange Glen seemed well-armed for their fight to finish high in the standings of the tough Avocado League. However, because of many early season iniuries and other unforeseen circumstances, the Pat's wound up with a disappointing record of two wins and seven losses. Individual honors given to the Patriots for Player of the Week were presented to Dave Johnson twice, John Rinehart, Ira Chaffin, captains Norm Johnston and Mike McPhee, Bob Chimarusti, Butch Callendar and Jim Geoppinger. Also, Dave Johnson, while capturing two Player of the Week awards, was voted into the All-Avocado League defensive team. A great honor for anyone. Excellent coaching divided into young, eager and determined football players equals over-all, a young, eager and determined football team. Such was our Junior Varsity football team for 1964. Head coach, Dave Parker, along with his fine assistant Paul Watts, guided the young Pats to a re- cord of 4 wins and 4 losses. Led by Most Valuable Player Dan Huff, Captain Jim West and some excellent blocking and tackling by the rest of the team, the JV's trampled their first three opponents by decisive scores. In actual league play, the JV, in one of the most exciting games of the season, ripped arch-rival San Dieguito by a score of 6 to 0. Football teams in the future look tremendously bright for Orange Glen High. Behind the able leadership of coaches Dave Chappie and Bill Wetzell, this year's Frosh were a sure bet to better the past performances of Freshmen teams in the past. Led by quarterback Paul Moyneur, end Albert San- chez ond linebacker Jerry Fenton, the Frosh molded a tremendous season's record of 6 wins, 1 loss and I tie. Patriots of Orange Glen can be confident that this yeor's Freshmen, in years to come will fight hard for their Alma Mater. Due to a tremendous team effort and the ex- cellent leadership of Coach Wetzell, Orange Glen's Varsity basketball team displayed out- standing potential in its first year in the tough Avocado League. After a slow start, the Pat- riots began to move, with good showings in both the Perris and Fallbrook Tournaments. At the end of pre-season play they had molded a re- cord of 7 wins and 5 losses. In basketball, as in football, the Patriots played their most exciting game in league com- petition against Vista High School. Playing in our gym, these never-say-die Patriots battled the Panthers down to the end of the game, finally succurrbing by a 57-56 score. This was the closest the Patriots came to winning a game in the tough Avocado League. While playing with detem1ina- tion and showing tremendous potential, Orange Glen's Patriots did much to uphold the reputation of sportsmanship and resolution in every sport they entered. Several individuals played well for the Pat- riots during the 64-65 season. Ryan Wilson, realizing his potential this year, used luring fakes to outrnaneuver his often taller opponents, lead- ing the team in scoring. Richard Gillet, perhaps the most consistent player in the line-up, con- tinually drilled the nets with his long iumpers and played well on defense. Ebb Nowry found his own at the beginning of league play and did a great iob while rebounding against bigger foes. These Patriots, along with the other team mem- bers, combined in a supreme effort for Orange Glen, never giving up against more-experienced competition. Dixon, who followed Paul Watts at the helm, showed signs of outstanding leadership as he lead the young Pats to a seasonal reading of 7 wins and ll losses. With inexperience going against them this year, the Junior Varsity fell to an unexpected low for over- all team standings in the tough Avocado League. Winning their First five games in six outings, the JV seemed well on their way to a successful season. However, when League play finally came, the iunior Pats were unable to muster any victories . The Patriots final two triumphs came at the expense of non-league rivals Elsinore and El Caion. Boasting a tremendous season's record of IO wins and 3 losses, the smallest of the Patriots at Orange Glen, the freshmen, battled each opponent with the enthusiasm and spirit that Patriots are noted for. After dropping their first game to Ramona by a close score of 35-32, the little Pats bounced back to win their next eight in a row. Contributing to the attack ofthe Frosh was their successful coach Dave Chappie. Chappie, in his second year of coaching at the Frosh level, has proved himself very capable of coaching the young athletes that will be tomorrow's varsity candidates. The Patriots, with all of last years team returning and some good prospects up from the iunior varsity showed many observers in early practices that they had a nucleus of a fine team. However when the first two games rolled around all indications of a good team were hard to find . The Pats were thumped by Elsinore 12-3 in the first encounter and then went on to lose to Army-Navy by a score of 3-l . ln the third game it was a different story, however. Again meeting Elsinore on the latters diamond, the Patriots put togeth- er timely hitting and pitching to muster a 3-0 victory. When league competition finally arrived, the Pats were in full gear and eager to meet their rough opponents. Up to the time the Torch went to press, the leading Patriot hitter was second baseman Dennis Vinie. Catcher Ernie Olivas had been the Pat's outstanding defensive performer. The Patriot grapplers accomplished a tiefor second in their first year in the tough, Avocado League, losing only to the more experienced Vista and Oceanside teams. Grand Ave. 745-4841 Spilog uc Busy sounds coming from the Yearbook Class have ceased. The 1965 Torch is finished. A photo album, campus description, historical document, and record of activities have been the obiect of the Torch effort. Work for these 25 people has filled afternoons, evenings, and weekends for an entire year. The dummy book filled with third copy triplicate forms, sitting on the advisor's desk, represents the finished book -the final product of much preparation, much work, and much worry. The task of the staff has been lessened by the patience and assistance of many groups and individuals who have been vitally interested in the success of this publication . . . Mr. Damelio, Yearbook Advisor, Mr. Ross, Principal, the Office Staff, and the R. Wallace Pischel Publishing Company. To these people we wish fuses Co- Editors to give a grateful THANK - YOU. F -.
