Chess. it has been said. his as much mystery as a woman. There is always more to learn more to admire, and more to enjoy. An unfortunate prejudice that keeps some people away from chess is the popular belief that only a mental giant can play chess well. Playing chess is a specialized skill which can be developed by training and practice. An important point to remem- ber is this: to enjoy chess you donlt have to be a great master, you only have to be a little better than your opponents. What is also important is to have a clear picture of the basic rules, familiarize yourself with the relative value of different pieces and get a sys- tematic grasp of the opening systems. Fred Reinfeld '4Chess In a Nut Shell This years Chess Club is the first on the OCCC campus. It's primary pui'pose is to produce better chess players and to interest students in learning the intellectually challenging game. Beginners are taught by the experienced players. Intercollegiate competitions are anticipated. Presently tournaments are only among the club's members. Winners of the 1967-68 Chess Club Tournament are congratulated by College officials.
