John 5:39, As the graduating class of 1955 leaves the Open Bible College, we have chosen the name of BEREANS -SCRIPTURE SEARCHERS, Who were the BEREANS and why were they called Sc rip- ture Searchers? They were the first group of people, who, after hearing the gospel, sat down in a body and with the help of the Holy Spirit studied the Holy Writ to see if this new gos- pel be true. As Paul taught them through his mighty sermons they compared his preaching with the Word of God. This must have been the Old Testament for the New Testament was not yet in existence. They listened to the sermons, proved them by the Scriptures and thus came to believe what they heard. J. Glentworth Butler refers to them as being noble men and women because of their constant searching of the Scriptures. From the time of those BEREANS until today, we have had Scripture Searchers. The class of '55 have for the past three years been BEREANS, we have searched the Scriptures and found them to be true. As we leave we are going forth to inspire others to become Scripture Searchers too. Gloria Hall 12 Jaw! 70666 cmd eazfamwz' We, the class of nineteen hundred fifty-five, do hereby make and declare this to be our last will and testament, to be read on class night to those in attendance. ROXANE BERGGREN leaves her knowledge of Greek to Bro. Fulton! DOROTHEA CAMPBELL wills her hearty laugh to Sharon Pfaden- hauer who only giggles! HARRIET CASHMAN wills her quietness to Bob Thomas. We are sure the teachers will appreciate this! GLORIA HALL wills her ability to drive carefully to Mrs. Archer! ETHEL HEBBERT wills her ability to cook to all the brides-to-be. We hope all you grooms like soup! DWIGHT HUNNELL needs all the ability he has - but to any future song leader he leaves his one specialty - leading the chorus to the tune of On Top of Old Smoky. JANET OSTENDORF wills her ability to fit into small places to Don Krantz! M, L, REEVES wills to Bro. Archer the present he received in the Christmas grab bag - a package of combs! DEAN SCHAGER wills his ability to unknowingly sit through the wrong class to Jim Groen! ROBERT SMOLDT leaves all the underclassmen a half of a beef, a gift from the packing plant to him as he leaves their employment to go into the Lord's work. HOWARD STONE leaves his ability to get a three year diploma in two years to anyone willing to give it a try! RALPH WATTS wills his expressions of wit to Quentin Quiner - such as the time Bro. Bechtel asked, What is General Electric's Slogan? and Ralph replied, Don't be a bulb-snatcher! 13 As the sands of time trickle slowly through the great hourglass of eternity we look away ten years into the future to catch a glimpse of the class of '55. Years have scattered the small group throughout the world and we must travel far to contact all of them. First, let us travel to the University of California, in Los Angeles. Upon entering the great doors we see a distinguished gray haired gentleman rushing down the corridor wearing black spectacles and carrying books under both arms. As we enter the classroom we see none other than Dr. Ralph Watts, D. D., Ph. D. lectur- ing the class in Advanced Theology. Traveling along we come to the suburbs of Washing- ton passing billboards reading, Vote for Schager. Upon inquiry we find that it is our own Dean Schager running for Senator of the state. We wish him success because Congress needs Christian men like Dean. After speaking with Dean a short time we journey to the big state of Texas and enter the Metropolis of Dallas. In the suburbs of this great city a large church is being constructed. High up on the pinnacle we see Rev. Dwight I-Iunnell, hammer in hand, still doing carpenter work. Next we head toward Mexico City, Mexico. While making a tour of the town someone called to us. I-Ier face is familiar. Instantly we realize that it is Harriet Cashman. We find that she is busy boosting her husband who is the electrical engineer of the famous Gospel net- work to Europe. Traveling northward across the continent we come upon a strange looking igloo type auditorium just eighty miles from the North Pole in this strange land of the midnight sun. From the entrance of the igloo we hear the melody of The Old Rugged Cross and entering we see Ethel Hebbert preaching to the congregation of Eskimos. We next travel to Casper, Wyoming where Rev. How- ard Stone is conducting the morning worship service. We note that the choir is made up of all the little Stones, lead by their mother. In the afternoon everyone gathers on 14 the church lawn to look into the sky for something. Soon we see a small speck and then we see a sleek beautiful Bell Aricobra SP700 Jet Helicopter gracefully drop to the lawn. Rev. M. L. Reeves, Open Bible's Flying E - vangelist steps forth to hold the service that night. He tells us that he chose a helicopter to travel in so that he might carry the Gospel to the remotest parts of the world 1WyomingJ . After the service we travel with him to his home in Miami, Florida. Arriving in Miami we notice a huge DC7B PAA airplane load- ing for a flight to Rio de Janerio, Brazil. The charming little stewardess at the gate, smiling graciously and calling for tickets in seven languages is someone we could never forget. Yes, Roxane Berggren is now on the regular Miami, Rio flight. The only change we note is that she purchased a flight locker and now carries her six brief cases in one trunk. Now leaving the sunny state of Florida we travel across the At- lantic to Goldcoast, Africa. In the distant jungle we hear the in- sistent beat of the drurn. Nearing the sound we see a familiar fig- ure in native costume. It is none other than sun -tanned Gloria I-Iall. She tells us that she has been translating the Gospels into the native tongue. After visiting a few days we go back to our be- loved United States. Stopping in Maine, we visit Dorothea Campbell where she is working as supervisor over a big Christian orphanage. The grand total of 313 children makes quite a family for her. ln the neighboring state of Vermont we find Janet Ostendorf playing the organ in religious services held for the boys of the near-by air field. She plays the organ on week-ends and is a sur- geon in the near-by hospital during the week. Traveling southward for our last visit we come to Raleigh, North Carolina where Rev. Robert Smoldt is holding the fifteenth week of revival in a large city auditorium. At the close of these meetings we will travel to Rome, Italy for six months of services there. We return to the halls of O. B. C. to report to the students now enrolled the progress of one class of their alumni. May they also go to the ends of the earth to carry the Gospel to those who have never heard. 15 Olqmpcaaa 1 k 1 59' , sry' CLASSOFFICERS: Jim Groen, President: Dixie Woods, Secretary: Glenna Widmer, Vice President: Everett P. Pfadenhauer V MUSIC Music has a very permanent place in the curriculum of O. B. C. Nearly always the halls ring with musical sounds of instruments or voices. Outstanding vocal features are the Girls' Glee Cflub, Boyslq Chorus, and our school choir - all under the direction o Lavonne . Archer, Our fine choir consisting of fifty blended voices, has sung at Youth For Christ Rallies, con erences, and conventions. We also boast of a fine boys' quartet, always busily engaged in the Lord's work. Iri addition todthis, the Melodettes, composed of three Fresh- man ir s, have ma e several a. earances. Aiong the instrumental line lsjagl three boys with their shiny trum- pets. They are known as the Trumpeteers. This group and the boys' saxophone quartet really make fine music. Combining all our instru- ments we have a fine orchestra which is directed by Lottie Anthony. We are proud of the excellent representation of talent in our school. 7 Sax Zamtet z 1 Jim Groen, Bob Thomas, Don Krantz, Roy Van Dyke, Duane Anderson, Bob Thomas Ray Kepple. 7m Pat Newberg, Sharon Pfadenhauer, Grace Weidenbach, FIRST ROW: Miles Stearns, Harriet Cashman, Henrietta Pearce, Barbara Atkinson, Dorothea Campbell, Priscilla Hammond, Ray Gowing. And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! Romans 10: 14- 15 Truly this is our motto here at Open Bible Collegeg to preach the gospel of peace. We are in Bible College not only to study but to be LIVING EPISTLES, and to send out workers into the over-ripe harvest field. During the opening weeks of the fall school term, the burden of foreign missions began to rest heavily upon the students of O, B, C, Through the combined efforts of fac- ulty and students the FOREIGN MISSIONS FELLOWSHIP was organized. This Fellowship is made up of groups of students who are primarily interested in one specific field. These groups meet individually to read letters from the missionaries, to conduct other business, and to pray for the needs of the missionaries. Once a month all the groups meet as a body to give reports on various activities of the different groups and to have combined prayer for them. The FOREIGN MISSIONS FELLOWSHIP has been a real blessing to Open Bible College and an even greater blessing, We trust, to our missionaries the world around. This spir- itual task force is doing a real work for the Lord and the effects have been and will be far reaching, and crowned with many souls. God bless you missionaries, we're praying for you! RIGIQ1'i.De1be1t and He - He joined the Roman Cath- - Wayne and Mmferfe Pearce olic Church at the age of axlne Kelderrno 15 and was baptized in a an' village near Warsaw, Poland. At the age of 17 he went to Hamburg, Germany and became a Presbyterian Missionary to the Jews. While there he accepted Christ as his Saviour. In May of 1913 he left Europe for ARGENTINA, In 1918 he took up nurses train- ing and graduated in December of 1921. Peter came to the United States of America in May of 1922 to study for the ministry. He lived in Los Angeles until 1936. Upon arriving in the States he realized the smallness of his education. First of all, he was left an orphan at eleven years of age. While studying long hours at nursing he had no time to further his education. In order to become an American citizen he had to enter civil service which required a high school education. He therefore entered night schools because he was too old to enter day schools. He attended God's Bible School at Cincin- nati, Ohiog Kansas City Bible School and later came to Open Bible In- stitute. Upon coming to Bible School he could speak fluently in three languages and read and write in seven. Bro. Kizner graduated from Open Bible Institute in 1940. Since then he has been doing Missionary work in ARGENTINA, the land of his call- ing. 31 Rev. and Mrs. Edmund Outhouse and their two children Shirley and Sharon are the mis- . . S mane Pfadenhaw' sional-ies in Chile which this neue Phutigeket group represents. We have Claude W heard many wonderful reports of the accomplishments of these missionaries. The Sun- day School has grown immensely and they now have added four classes. They have to hold some classes outside the building. Plans are being made to build a new church which will seat one thousand members in Sunday School. Praise God for this wonder- ful expansion. The Chile F. M. F. They met with much opposition to the Gospel at the be- ginning of their ministry. Though many things happened, however, they remained faithful to their calling and now God has sent other laborers to help them. Three couples, Lewis and Tullia Miller, Bill and Toonie Heflin and Don and Margaret Smith, are their co-workers. The Open Bible Mission in Cuba has six churches, two of which are supporting their own native worker. The harvest truly is ripe in Cuba. and we praise God that He has sent forth these laborers into His great harvest field! An evangel- istic team composed of Rev. Harvey Klapstein, Edmund Outhouse and Charles M. Learning went there for several months of meetings Soon after that regular Open Bible Standard mis- sionaries arrived. Five years ago, Ivan and Kay Morton, the first Open Bible Standard mission- aries appointed to the is- land, found five Christians faithfully awaiting their coming. From this small beginning, the work has prospered and expanded. The church in Montego Bay has a Sunday School attendance of five hun- dred. Besides this headquarters church there is now another central area opened at Newport. Also, nine country churches have been started These begin as special bamboo churches, but as the number of Chris- tians grows and their special offerings are saved they are able to build a stone church in four or five years. One of the most important phases of the work has just been opened this year, the Jamaican Open Bible Institute, located at Newport. The first class consists of four- teen students. An orphanage has also been started in Newport. Besides the workers pictured on this page, Curtis and Martha Ruby and Dorothy Cummings will soon be doing missionary work in Jamaica. The two families settled in the Tokyo area, where they began their long, hard study of the language. Then Bro. Collins erected a church in the same area. A Japanese pastor in Chiba City turned his group over to Bro. Rounds. About six months later, on January 10, 1951, another family came to Japan, the Eddie Karnes. Bro. Karnes decided to settle in Koba fSouthern Japanl. He soon bought a church there. Many souls have been saved, churches have been built and there are now seven Japanese students in Bible School. The mission station is lo- cated about an hour and one-half from the city of Surabaia, an ideal spot for their Bibl S e chool. Most of the students in the Bible School are from the is- l and of Sumatra, others are Chinese and M anaden- ese. Miss Thiederrnan teaches in the Bible School d an also helps the new missionaries to learn the language. Evelyn Thiederman had to return to the U ' nited States a few months ago because of poor health. She went there in September, 1951 and began work for the Far Eastern Broad- Xxmet. casting Company. There she is responsible for such programs as Youth in Action, Teachers' Clinic and Songs with a Smile. The Philippines are about as large as the New England States combined with New York. They have a population of 2.0, 000, 000. The English language is widely used among the younger gen- eration, however, there is a move under way to make the Tagalog, one of the major dialects the national lan- guage of the Philippines. The station at which Lois works broadcasts in thirty- three of the eight-seven dialects spoken there. wzddawl Return visas to India re fused! On the same street of this polyglot island you may see an East Indian woman in a sari with a ring in her nose, Hindus in traditional dress, Portuguese, Af- Kaare and Jean Wihelmsen with their sons, Bryant and Hubert. ricans, and the sharp businessmen- the Chinese. Here on an island 50 miles long and 40 miles wide are 700, 000 people. One third of them are East Indians! Here are typical bazaars and Hindu Temples. Here the ministry of the Wilhelmsens in Hindu and English can best be utilized for the Glory of God. In one short year a large group of bloodwashed ones has been wrested by prayer and fortitude from the grip of the enemy of our souls. Today this group is helping repair and repaint the building which will house the mis- sionaries and be the home of the Open Bible Institute of Trinidad. Problems of mutual concern and interest are brought before this group and given careful, prayerful consideration. Here the views of both the students and faculty are freely expressed and mutually considered.
