STUDENT COUNCIL The officers chosen for the 1958-59 Student Council were: Jean Louret, presidentg Wayne DeMaster, vice- presidentg and Joyce Neubeck, secretary-treasurer. The Student Council this year introduced the idea of campaigning for class offices. The Senior Class used this method which proved to be successful. The planning of Homecoming was an important job of the group as they set up the election of the queen and court, organized the parade, afternoon program, bonfire activities, and half-time ceremonies. Near the beginning of the year, a schedule for organizations' presenting pep skits and selling concessions for home games was set up. The Student Council members were assigned to introduce assembly programs through- out the year. Special recognition was given to the Dads of the football team by the Council. In November the Council sponsored a three-day Twirp Season which was climaxed by a Twirp Party held in the SYTU- Their projects this year included the painting of the bleachers, which was done with the Conservation Club, cleaning the gym kitchen, and having a trophy case made in the gym entrance. The Student Council is shown serving lunch for Come to School Night. 36 NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The National Honor Society is sponsored by the National Associa- tion of School Principals. It is the only organization of its type which has an international charter. The school must make ap- plication to the Association of School Principals to get a charter. In order to become a member of this society the student must have a B average. The faculty all got an evaluation sheet on which they rated the students on four specific points which are: Service, Leadership, Character, and Growth. Two people were selected from the Junior Class and five from the Senior Class. This number may vary every year. This is the first year that Oostburg has had this society. The students of this past year are the charter members and their number is 7384. It is quite unusual for a school of this size to have this society. A formal initiation ceremony was held this spring for the mem- bers. They were also awarded pins for being a member of this society. The two honor guards for commencement, Robert Shukow and John Swart. Members of the National Honor Society, Judy Lammers, Jean Louret, Jean Louret, Nancy Ebbers, Joan Dirkse, Mr. Paton, the advisor, John Swart, Robert Schukow, and Ralph Veldboom, are looking at the charter. av - P1 1 X 4 Some of the staff is shown working on Mike Lynum, American Yearbook Company, the dummy in the annual room. shows sample covers to the editorial staff.
