Will Rogers-the most famous Oklahoman and one of the best loved Americans who ever lived—was born in the Oo ogah com- munity a century ago, on November 4, 1879. An lndian owboy, he reached the top of the heap ... in vaudeville, in radio and films, as a newspaper columnist and author, as a great humanitarian and heroic American. Yet, he remained humble, proud of his heritage in Indian Territory, and dose to the earth from which he sprang . . . Although formal education was not Will's favorite pastime, learning was. He wanted to learn about everything, and wanted to learn by experiencing. To be clever, he poked fun at everything, and to be able to be successful, he had to understand everything—from a farmer's crop to the functions of the Congress and the activities of a president. 5
