An lndian owboy, he reached the top of the heap ... in vaudeville, in radio and films, as a newspaper columnist and author, as a great humanitarian and heroic American. Yet, he remained humble, proud of his heritage in Indian Territory, and dose to the earth from which he sprang . . . Along with the rest of the nation, Oologah High School is proud to pay tribute to Will Rogers—the local boy who made good, and then some. He wanted to learn about everything, and wanted to learn by experiencing. To be clever, he poked fun at everything, and to be able to be successful, he had to understand everything—from a farmer's crop to the functions of the Congress and the activities of a president. 5 Being involved in so many interests, Will would have fit in well with today's young people. Politics, flying, the theatre, his family-all of them had a special place in Will's life. One of the most admirable qualities of his active life was his willing- ness to share all that he experienced with the people of the world. o Children were always special to Will. He always enjoyed the times spent with his own children as well as the children of the nation. He knew that in youth is the hope of tomorrow and the future of the world. 12 ■ 13 ■•mb 9 WnATmmtwm rbm WitA Cleg mmd «ore Q—lag CLAREMORE DAILY PROGRESS EXTRA EOmON J, II Mf WII-M M . twwv M it. i« tw cam a wczx ox two cum a oorx WELL ROGERS AND WILEY POST KILLED! 7 flew - a man Everyone has deep in their heart the old town or community where they first went barefooted, got their first licking, traded the first pocket knife, grew up and finally went away thinking they were too big for that burg. One big reason for this is that we have two extremely fine arts and crafts instructors. But, two good teachers alone isn't enough to produce the kind of arts and crafts work that is being done in O. H. S. What's the missing half? The ability of the students involved. Without their eagerness to be “artistic, (once in a while), some really nice projects would not be made. So, in these two pages, here are some pictures to remind people of the things they did this year. TOP RIGHT: No Norman, the camera Isn’t going away yet. It was waiting just for you to look up. MIDDLE LEFT: For once Ms. Brown is not busy helping some of her students. But, that doesn’t mean she doesn’t find something to keep herself busy. And if you don’t have the patience, then you do it right the first time. Now, either Lee Kooken is getting her work done right the first time, or she's showing her careful patience at it the second time. Are we correct in assuming that, Lee?! MIDDLE LEFT: Here is Ms. Brown giving some first aide to a seem- ingly careless jo Hollis. Aw, don’t cry jo, it won’t hurt a bit. (Well, maybe not very much!) MIDDLE RIGHT: Who on earth could these two characters be? Laurel and Hardy? Mutt and Jeff? Cheech and Chong, maybe? Heck! They didn’t turn out to be anybody especially famous. Teaching these subjects are Mr. Wellman, Mr. McLaughlin, and the intern teacher Mrs. McClure. These classes teach the basic skills for many jobs. The courses take hard work, but most students enjoy them. Many memories are captured during the year such as: Eight pages of shorthand every night, getting fingernails caught between keys, Mr. McLaughlin's corny jokes, timed writings, being five lessons behind at the end of the nine weeks, and last but certainly not least, the triumphant feeling of getting through the year with an ABOVE A VERAGEgrade! Their beginnings He in the early years of the nineteenth century. Beginning in 1835 a number of states passed laws which permitted tax levies for the support of a collection of boohs to be housed in school districts, but the funds collected under these laws were used to support public libraries administered by school districts. Educational leaders like Horace Mann wished to provide books in schools and proposed to establish libraries in school districts with state aid, but the earliest substantial library services to schools came from public libraries, in some instances, the books of the public library loaned to classrooms were gathered in a single location in a school, and these rooms became school library branches of the public library. During the first three decades of the twentieth century educational and library organizations showed a definite interest in the development of school libraries. It's our way of communicating with each other. English is the key factor to communication and is known world-wide as the generally accepted language. And bet you thought English was just nouns and verbs, sentences, paragraphs, compositions, and especially (juniors) research papers. PPoab “It's the grandest show business know anything about and the only place where an actor can act and at the same time sit down in front and dap for himself. ” These are words that have been quoted from Will Rogers. They have been found to be extremely true in all cases. To become an actor, one must have faith in himself to be ab t to go out in front of an audience and portray a believable char- acter. Once this has been accomplished, the actor is able to stand back and honestly say, “Hey, did that pretty well!” Only then is he able to conquer the trials and tribulations that inevitably can be found in the real outside world in which we live. Some first time events have happened this year to the Speech department. Oo ogah was the host for a major Speech tournament, and, for the Regional One-Act Play competition. They ordered brand new tee-shirts from Townsend Top Shop that were designed by Doug Kelley. Teresa Hall was the first actor or actress from Oologah High School to be named to the National Forensic League. In the Regional One-Acts, Oologah placed third and was eligible to compete at the state tournament in Oklahoma City. At one of the year's biggest tournaments, held at Oklahoma Baptist University, in Shawnee, Oologah made a dean sweep of the dramatic duet category by taking first, second, and third places. Also, some first and second year students found out that the Almighty Thespus really does see all, hear all, and know all!! But, with all these significant accomplishments, Mr. Vaughan really has some high expectations in store for next year. Right, Mr. Ford?! The news that the Journalism class puts out in the school newspaper lets the students know just what is going on. The class tries, also, to print entertaining articles and surveys. Most students think that being on the Journalism staff simply means typing a few articles every now and then. This is not true at all. A great amount of time and research is spent on coming up with a suitable piece of news. This under-rated organization deserves a small bit of recognition for the satisfying type of work that they continue to put out in order to keep us interested in all of the current school happenings. TOP LEFT: Here is the sign of the O. H. S. mascot which appears on each and every issue of the school newspaper. TOP RIGHT: The one and only Kelly Ford stands before his throne doing what? Something sure seems to be funny. They all look as if they are working. But are they really?? MIDDLE LEFT: Mr. Ford seems to hove a bit of a surprised look on his face as he listens to what Maggie Wise has just said to him. Of course with Maggie, it could have been just about anything! MIDDLE RIGHT: Wanted! Dead or Alive! I ana Richards, Junior O. H. S. student. For possession of a dangerous weapon! It may or may not have been clear to some, but I ana is holding a pair of scissors. Oh yeah, we forget that with Jana, a Q-tip can become a dangerous weapon! Just kidding, Jana! BOTTOM LEFT: Typing isn't the only part of preparing articles. Besides time and research, an extreme amount of writing (and rewriting for some students) has to be done before an article can be ready to be typed. Here, Teresa Taylor is shown doing Just that. And the teachers them- selves seem to really get into the class and do a great job in helping the students. And with students and teachers working together maybe they will finally get it conquered in the future. 41 reading Reading hasn't changed a great deal in the past. Their enthusiasm and dedication has led them to another great year. They showed true spirit at all pep assemblies and athletic events; and received Standing Ovations for their half-time show at almost every presentation. The group traveled to several contests this year. At Pryor Contest, the flags and rifles won a first place trophy. At Aurora, Missouri, the band received a first place trophy in field marching and a first place trophy in parade marching. They went to District Marching Contest at Union, where they obtained a Superior (I) rating, which qualified them to go to State Marching Contest held at Lawton, Okla. There they received two trophies: one for a second place rating in Class 2A, and one for “The Most Impressive Band Runner-Up.” They were only short ' 2 a point in being the best band in Oklahoma, with Durant being the victor. Thus, establishing Oologah '5 band as the “Second in the. State!” They owe all their achievements to their band director Charles Garner. He was the one who designed the routine and composed most of the show’s music. Without him they couldn’t have gone anywhere. All of his students think he is terrific and want him to know he is appreciated. One must be willing to devote many hours of their time to prac- tice and activities for the student body to raise spirit. First, tryouts are held and girls wanting to be a cheerleader learn the same cheer and try out. They are judged on technique, appearance, spirit, gym- nastics, and volume of voice. The girls that make it and are on the squad have a big job ahead of them. Many squads choose to go to a summer camp to learn the newest cheers and pompon routines. The camp instructors usually have many good ideas for pep assemblies and raising school spirit. When the school year begins the girls are usually found mak- ing locker decorations or posters for the halls. After school you can find the cheerleaders practic- ing and perfecting the cheers they know. Their first test is the first game when the spirit and pride for the Mustang team is high. The cheerleaders lead the fans in yells to cheer their team to Victory. Pep assemblies are the high- light of school on a game day. Cheerleaders put several hours of planning into the pep assemblies. They usually have a skit to get the students roused and excited. When the student body gather in the gym and nearly take the roof off with their spirit it makes the team proud and they want to win. WRESTLING - at Oologah The 1978-79 Oologah Mustang Wrestling team was led by a new head coach, Mr. Sam Pellisier, and Coach Mike Prado. The grapplers worked very hard during the season looking forward to the regional and state tournaments, it takes something special” to be a Mustang wrestler. The matmen had strenuous practices all through the season. Most of the practices consisted of running, weight lifting, conditioning, learning new Russian moves and practicing the ones they already knew. Besides the prac- tices, many wrestlers had to pull weight. The wrestlers have done a great job this year representing our school, and play a big part in our Oologah Mustang Pride. and around the world. Layout and Design by: Tina Ptatner cafeteria :ustodians maintenance Working Around the Clock... A behind-the-scenes at what keeps Oologah Schools working smoothly. These people are hardly ever noticed by the student body. However, they are there, working very hard to keep our schools ticking. We are all used to the beautiful school we have, but without them, a school like ours couldn’t exist. They use their skills to keep our building and grounds in good condition, and tip-top shape. Everyday hot meals are prepared for us by the cafeteria women. The maintenance and custodians keep every- thing running perfectly, and looking bright and shiny. Last, but by no means least, our bus drivers take time to get everyone here safely; without them, many couldn’t make it at all. All of these people have proven to be a great asset to our school. We couldn t do without them, and we want them to know how much they Te appreciated. 18 Layout and Design by: Jana May Never Done.
