We a1'e now entering on the stage to take part in life 's activities. When We entered the High School in the fall of 1914, sixty- two strong, we were determined to be the largest class ever To graduate from Ontario High. But each year members of the class of '18 have either quit school, been married or gone elsewhere to school. Ten members of the class were in sueh a hurry to leave Ontario High, that they graduated with last year's class. A former member of our class, Ruth Howe, passed away i11 the fall after battling several weeks with typhoid fever. Irving Harris is help- i11g to defend Old Glory. Several new members have come To fill the places made vacant by those who left, but still only twenty- three are leaving 'tOur Dear Old High in 1918. In our Freshman year we had many social functions which were i111n1e11sely enjoyed by all present. As our class constituted over half of the student body, upper classmen did not bother us much. They did a few things scarcely Worth mentioning, sueh as stealing our president from a meeting once. In the Sophomore year we did our part in helping to keep the Freshmen miserable. But in spite of this we succeeded in learning a few lessons which will probably be of use to us in later years. ID. A. Hiles was our class advisor during this year. Sleigh rides and skating parties helped to pass away the time. The most important events of our Junior year were the Junior-Senior Hop held at the Grange, and the Junior-Senior re- ception which was held at the elose of tl1e year. For this year M r. L. L. flulbertson was appointed our class advisor. During this, our Senior year, we have been very busy with Junior Red Cross, Honor Guard VVork, and with the XV. S. S. eani- paigns, Y. M. Cl. A. campaigns and other work of this nature. We have liberally supported each and all of the eampaigns to tl1e best of our ability. Every year members of our class have been in the track, fooball a11d basketball teams. Another star in our erown is that for the last two years, Ed Fraser, a 1ne111ber of olll' class, has been the yell-leader! 4- 7, O QC e Obffirrrn I' 'ffl usuent. S1-x'r:'tary and 'Preasuru Chuxd U. SENIOR CLASS WILL We, the learned Senior class of 1918, realizing that our days are near an enrl do will and bequeath to the school faculty and various other pe.ople , our youth- ful accomplishments which we no longer need. But knowing the extravagance ul certain persons who will receive a part of this fortune, we hereby declare that no person shall use his or her share until the first day of September 1948. In doing this we are sure of protecting the interest of those, who in their childhood days might become careless or extravagant. Item I. I THE COMPANY The most widely known organization of Ontario High School is the military company. The first company contained about forty members. Officers up to the rank of captain were elected from the pupils, Messrs. Hall and Petrie holding the rank of Colonel and Major, for the first year. The uniforms selected the first year were tl1e khaki service n11ifor1n. The following two years gray dress and blue dress uni- forms were worn. These were substituted in the fourth year by the regular army service uniform which has been used si11ce. The purpose of organizing the company was to teach the boys the rudiments of discipline and drill as taught to the soldiers, and to supply a means of exercise which was not obtainable because of the lack of a g'y1I1l121Sll11I1. The time devoted to drill was, originally three forty minutes periods, three times each week, one half credit bei11g given for the four years of drill. This year, however, due to the war, drill is given each day-one half credit being given for the year's work. The work this year has been more practical and instructive than in previous years. Trenches have been dug, dummies for bayonet practice erected. Attacks are planned in which bombing, bayonet and relief squads are all sent over the top carrying out their orders and duties as on the field of battle. All actions are re- produced as 11C2l1' to the real thing as possible. Something looked forward to with much interest and excite- Illltllt each spring is the competitive drill. The company is drilled by an army officer who by a process of elimination determines the best drilled cadet. To this person is awarded a silver medal. Al- though drill has IIUVCI' bee11 compulsory there has never been more than two or three boys each year not participating. This was the first organization of this kind in an Oregon High School, and has always been a credit to the school and has many times received much praise from notable persons. The result of tl1is n1eeting was the formation of a debating society with the following officers: President, Rose Bender, Vice President, Ed Fraserg Secretary and Treasurer, Wesley Glenn. The first debate which was a tryout for places o11 the inter- seholastie team, was held the third wek in lleeember, when Clara Uraig and Wesley Glenn, with Dwight Vox as alternate, were ehosen to represent the O. H. S. i11 the Oregon State Debating League. The question to be debated in our division of the State League was: Resolved, That Oregon should abolish the State Senate. Our team upheld the affirmative of this question against the Nyssa lligh Sehool, January 18, and received tl1e unanimous decision of tl1e judges: and defended the negative of the same question against Harney County High School at Burns, February 8, winning a 2 to 1 decision. These victories made O. H. S. champion of this division of the State League. ' On March 15, the O. H. S. team upholding the affirmative of the question, '4Resolved, That at the e11d of the present war the United States should become a member of a league of nations With power to enforce the decisions of its international eourtg won a 2 to 1 decision over Wallowa High School. This debate took place in the assembly hall of the Ontario High School. The O. H. S. now holds the championship of Eastern O1'egon. f ff ' 5 ' 'X Q f ee nuur Cguztrh C5315 Standing. About tl1e last of October the boys were suddenly seized with the fever and although there were only three lettermen, M el lnlloeh Overstreet and Christiansen, f1'om last year's team, there was fairly good showing, but before any games were played Jim Over- street had left school which weakened the team eonsiderabl y. Three games were scheduled, Nyssa, Payette and Weiser. The Nyssa and Payette games were played away from home and resulted in a win and loss. The VVeiser game scheduled fol l'll2llllir1- giving day was not played due to weather conditions. Ontario 34, Nyssa 0. The first game was played with Nyssa High Sehool on their home grounds. This game was expected at the least to be close, Nyssa having previously beaten Parma a11d Vale by large scores, but we had them outelassed from the start. Our boys were rather sore and stiff, havi11g had only a week's praetiee, but after the first few minutes of play we were on the offensive, the back field making yardage at will. Honser and Christiansen scoring two touchdowns each and Doane and Walters one apiece. Two ears of rooters accompanied the players. Payete 1233 Ontario 7. The game played at Payette was a mneh better and more evenly matehed affair. NVe scored our only touchdown a few moments after the lciek off. Payette scoring in the second and third quarters. Tn the last we worked the ball the full length of the field and would have seored had not time have been called. The feature of the game was the playing of Ohoeolates Loughry, Payette 's half. The 1918 basket ball season may be counted quite success- ful, we l1avi11g only lost o11e out of six games played. The team consisted practically of 11ew material, there being o11ly two of last years men left, Rader and Christiansen. Rader was pre- vented from playing until the last few games due to health con-- ditions. Our late start was due to the difficulty in securing a hall. At the end of the first weeks practice we had a hard game with Fruit- land which resulted in a victory for Ontario, not much team work, our real basket ball playi11g was shown us this game. The fol- lowing Week We defeated Weisei' High by superior team work and fast playing. The two games played with Weiser Institute at NVeiser and Ontario resulted in two more victories for our ever improving team. A very close game was played with the Alumni, in this game we met several old stars but succeeded in hooking it on them. The next game played was with Caldwell High School, this was our only defeat of the season and was no doubt due to the con- dition ot' the players, Bervin and Christiansen being unable to play. However it was a good fast game and one of the best of the season. This ended the season alld is perhaps one of Ontario's most successful. 'There was always a good turn out and much credit must be give11 the scrubs and coach S. M. Boucher, who made possible A winning team for Ontario.
