This year because of unavoidable circumstances he had to leave in mid-term. As our coach, Mr. Colburn never gave up the fight, even when we were losing. He was well liked by the whole student body. He helped anyone in anyway he could and was appreciated-by all. To put it as one student did, NNothing is missed until one cannot have it. Mr. Colburn, we hope that someday you will be able to return to Ontario High School. I2 ll MONO 'Rza f w MICH MMM BOARD OF EDUCATION The members of the Board of Education are: Floyd L. Wwhgt ropeqn, he was asked. nwhy, suh, he answered, nde rope dat I tied de mule on the track wlf.U Perhaps, like the old Negro, we all expect too much of life, Class of 1942. There are times when we are unable to make adjustments because we do expect too much. During our 12 years together I have grown to know each and every one of you as a friend. It has been our job, your teachers and myself, to help you make adjustments in your lives and to prepare you for life itself. Often we have had to say nnou when it would have been far easier to have said nyesu. At the time you may not have known lt, but it was our purpose to ready you for the hard knocks of the ncold, crueln world. The only way to become a good basketball or tennis player is to play the game. It does no great good to read a book on the subject and then expect to step out on the court and play a brilliant game. You become a good player only through actual game experience. Life is filled with disappointment as well as success. When we full to make the proper adjustments we become embittered. Your school life has been planned, not only to.have you prepare lessons, recite and take examinations: far more than that, your school life has been set up to help you learn to live. Your school life has been pleasant for the most part. Yet your training here has been most valuable to you where you have met failure as well as success: where you have been tested as to whether you can take orders and criticismg and where you have had the opportunity to profit by your mistakes. One of my chief joys in a long line of teaching years has been the receipt of many letters from former Ontario boys-our boys--who are now in service camps throughout the United States. Nearly every ending contains some small word of apprecia- tion for the grand experiences which the writer has had when he attended your Alma Mater. Mhny of these boys have been promoted and we are proud of their records. Now comes the time for you to leave us. We regret seeing you leave, believe it or not. However, we are looking forward to hearing from you again. we shall rejoice with you when you achieve fame, and we shall feel for you if sorrow enters your lives. To us, you are always 'our boys and girlsn. Good luck and God bless you, Class of 1942. STAIT FACULTY This year we have been very unfortunate in losing so many members of the faculty. Our class, as all other classes have before us, thinks that our group is the best that ever graduated from Ontario High. Of course, we have done some outstanding things to make us believe that this is true of our class. In 1958 we entered our first year of high school with thirty-nine members in the class As ugreenn freshmen, Miss Cross was our adviser. Gerald Harris was chosen as class President with Elsie Hollebrand to assist him. Gerald Waterman was Secretary and Shirley Hart was Treasurer. In November we had a class party in the school gymnasium. We decided to keep our class motto nNo reward without effort,W our class flower, the yellow rose, and our colors, blue and gold. In 1939 we organized with the following officers: Robert Mason, Presidentg Betty Cass Vice Presidentg Elberta Davis, Treasurer. A few of our class members left us in our sophomore year. M . Funnell was our leader for this year. We participated in more entertainment this year by having three parties. We finished the year with a picnic at Holland's In 1940 Harris, Vice party in the than usual. Cove. we re-organized under Miss Pottinger. We chose Betty Cass, President, Gerald President: Jean King, Secretaryg and Donald Risley, Treasurer. We had a fall and got our junior rings. Our rings were a different type of ring In May we had our Junior Prom, which was very successful. Again we ended the year with a picnic at Ho1land's Cove. For our last lap in our four year march we chose Donald Risley to keep our twenty- three in order, with Shirley Hart to help him. Muriel Ingraham was Secretary and Gerald Harris, Treasurer. Miss Cross was again our guide. Gerald Harris left us to go to Williamson High, so Gerald Waterman was chosen to fill his place. Our talented members of the class staged a three act comedy called uPoor Dear Edgarn. This, as all other things we have done, was successful too. At Easter time six of our adventurous seniors stormed to the Capitol of our nation, Washington, D. C. After a three day stay there we marched on to New York City where we npainted the town red.' After a week of gallivanting we came back home ready to settle down and work for the last quarter. We held a round and square dance and did very well on the selling of magazines and senior candy. Our two outstanding members are Betty Cass, valedictorian and Donald Risley, salutatorian. Tonight we are gathered here for almost the last time. Whether or not we have been successful will be proven in the years to come. by Jean King Cl SSIEICATI NS WHAT THE SWAMI PREDICTS I am the Great Swami. In competition against many boys of various towns, Ontario High School bowlers lost their chance to visit Rochester for the finals. Unfortunately the Ontario teams lost by only eleven pins, Newark's first and second teams winning the opportunity to go. Our musically minded pin pusher, Carl Klapp won out in the doubles with Breweu from Palmyra for his partner. There were two teams headed by Gladys Bailey and Lorraine Cook. Gladys Bailey and her team walked off the field with the winning ball. After soccer the girls looked forward to the volleyball tournament. Five teams were chosen according to the physical fitness index record. The Yankees under Captain Betty Cass claimed the volleyball crown after playing the tie-off with the Strutters headed by Evelyn De Groot. The Blue Hornets came next, while the Dodgers and Vicious V's were tied for fourth place. Basketball was the next sport on the calendar. The girls were divided into four group Jean King with her Torpedoes played an undefeated season. The runners-up in order were the Defenders under Captain Gladys Bailey, the Navy under Evelyn De Groot and the Marines under hmriel Ingraham. At the climax of the season the undefeated Torpedoes played an afternoon game with a group of town girls who were former basketball stars. The tumbling team has also been doing some remarkable work. They met at least once a week during the winter months. Members of the team were Lorraine Cook, Gladys Bailey, Muriel Ingraham, Peggy Bogue, Lois Hospers, June De Lass, Elsie Hollebrand, Rosie Pitts and Delores Fahnestock. The girls, under the capable direction of Miss Pauline Drake, also show keen interest in table tennis, shuffle board, badminton, baseball, archery and tennis. BOY'S INTRAMURAL SPORTS Mr. Winslow managed a very progressive program this year with volleyball as the leading sport. The captains of the teams were Gerald Waterman for the seniors, Richard Cuvelier for the juniors, Gerald Becker for the sophomores, and Bruce Cuvelier for the freshmen. The seniors won a decisive victory over the rest of the teams. There was a play-off in basketball for the senior high too. The proud fresh en walked off with the honors. The captains of these teams were Floyd Burnett for the seniors, Robert Mogray for the juniors, Douglas Powers for the sophomores and Harold Allen for the freshmen. d Next year we hope for an even better program.
