fE2'Qa If PRO DlY PFQESE In this edition of our year book we hope to give you an idea of our school and our school life. We have tried to show you not only our serious side, but also the recreational part of our school life. 'N We wish to thank the faculty members, Miss Elizabeth Smith, Miss McCreery, Mr. Sykes, Miss Pottinger, and Mr. Drews for their advice and assistance in enabling us to bring to you this, the nineteenth edition of the year book. We sincerely hope that you will enjoy it. f R f X Ji In . A -- !!l:g'Il idiillllli' 5 I-r 43 1 , , 4-:Q 4, We wish to dedicate this nineteenth edition of our yearbook to. Mr. Lloyd McGowan for his cooperation, loyal understanding, and unfailing good humor. Mr. McGowan has served us for two years as an agriculture teacher. This year he brought forth the Wayne County Ag Basket- ball champions. He has also supervised winners in various agriculture contests. Mr. McGowan has been always ready to offer his car and his own services in transporting teams and in chaperoning parties. He is always willing to help and advise, and he has proved a friend as well as teacher, not only to the agriculture students, but to everyone. DEDICATIC CARD EDU Nl We are proud of our Board of Education because they are constantly trying to improve our school for us. This year they have installed fluorescent llghting and have had the first floor interior decorated. They plan to do the other two floors in the very near future. Last summer, a sturdy macadam driveway was built. Floyd L. Mepham MY WAGE I bargained with Life for a penny, And Life would pay no more, however I begged at evening When I counted my scanty storey Fbr Life is a just employer, He gives you what you ask, But once you have set the wages, Why, you must bear the task. I worked for a menial's hire, Only to learn, dismayed, That any wage I had asked of Life, Life would have paid. Jessie B. Rittenhouse TO THE CLASS OF 1941! The little poem which I have selected to fill the top space on this page supplements very well the dynamic motto which you, the Class of 1941, have adopted, Uwe are not on top, but we are climbingn indicates that you are on your way to better things. You imply that you intend to get to the top--where there is always room. Too, you fully realize that it takes time and hard work to get there. There is always hope for those who realize their shortcomings and are willing to work for improvement. It is always with a pang of regret that I phrase a message to the Senior Class. This is especially true of this year's class. About 12 years ago I rode into Ontario on the HOntar1o Flyeru to begin my duties here. About the same time a number of tiny tots scrambled into their seats in the first grade. These same tiny tots are now on the verge of leaving their Alma Mater. Yes, you guessed it, you are the class to which I refer. We have traveled the path of knowledge together. It has been a most enjoyable experience for me to see you grow. Your joys have been our joys, and your sorrows our sorrows. We faculty members take a pardonable pride in feeling that we have had a hand in your success to date. From now on you are more or less Hon your ownn in this cold, cruel world. Some will go on to collegeg some will stay home and work on the farmg and still others will obtain positions with business and industry. , The best advice I can give you is to think carefully about the future. Do not be blinded by the glitter of a job in the effing. All that glitters is not gold. Weigh carefully your decisions before making them. You may be better off to stay on the farm or to go on with your education, than to take a position now which may only be temporary. Money is not everything. A man is poor, even though he may have many dollars, if that is all he has. The temptation is great at this particular time to give up the idea of further education to take a job now which pays fairly well. Look beyond the end of your nose when you make your decision. Life in the next few years will no doubt be filled with sacrifice. The lessons you have learned in Ontario High School should stand you in good stead. uLife is just one darned thing after anothern, states the cynic. Yet even the disagreeable things may be of real help to you. A philosopher once said that it's good for a dog to be pestered with fleasg it keeps him from thinking too much about being a dog. Good hard work, sprinkled here and there with failure as well as success, is good for us. It is said that most of us will rust out befzge we wear out. So with hard work, Class of 1941, you will get to the top. Best of luck n e c imb Mmnfff PRI CIP L Marjorie McCreegy, B. A Top--L. McGowan, L. Smith, G. Doyle, M. Calkins, M. Thape, A. Cross, U. The Junior Prom was our big thing, Whldh was held successfully in the spring. With popular DeBaene aga1n at the Pres1dent's stake, Vice-Presldent Betty Balley saw that he made no mistake. Walt Leary became Secretary as in his second year, And Dorothy Huxley aga1n kept the money without any fear. Miss Cross was on hand if we did need Some advice on activities so we might succeed. Greene Bottom--Yotter, Hollsbrand, Pruchniak, Mogray, Miss Pottinger, Dickinson, DeGroot, Secretary King In the year of nineteen thirty-seven we began our four year hitch. A as We enlisted the following officers, and we'll tell you which is which. The man we chose to lead us and to keep the class in hand, Was Mr. Gerald Harris, whose aid was Miss Elsie Hollebrand. As Secretary we chose Gerald Waterman lfrom the family of the same namel And to handle the money, Miss Shirley Hart, of drum majorette fame. Miss Cross was our Adviser, and to this we wish to add That we had a November party, and fun by all was had. The yellow rose, and blue and gold were our flower and colors in . turn And our motto, No reward without effort, we resolved never to , spurn. As sophomores we conscripted Bob Mason to lead our rising class, - And to help him and to guide him, we chose Miss Betty Cass. Our Secretary, Treasurer and Adviser, respectively Don Risley, Elberta Davis and Mr. Funnell, Were such true and faithful workers that you can be sure we rang the bell. ' As proof of that, the three parties we had came under the heading of swell. This year we have appointed Betty Cass and Gerald harris to lead our merry clan,N And we find Secretary Jean King and Treasurer Don Risley a very practical plan. Miss Pottlnger has been our Adviser and helped us in all we have done. In our party last fall and our Prom in May she proved a faithful one. We all believe that our junior year has been the happiest and best of allg t Our colors and flower have stood the test and our motto shall never fall! Facts by Jean King Poetry by Walter Leary Um RS SDF 0 RES In our freshman year Prexy Walt Cone Was elected to ascend our throne, And ready for duty's call Was Vice-President Betty Moll. With a smile that showed pleasure, Gladys Bailey became Treasurer. For the job of much work and toil We chose as Secretary Bill Coyle. To keep the boys and girls in tune, One party was held in October, another in June. With Miss Cross as our advisory head, At the end we all said, UOur freshman year ended too soon.u - Facts by Dorothy Huxley Poetry by Thomas Doyle Back to school we came the following September, A happy group of pupils we remember, Petrina Aqnello was chosen for the head chairg Upon her we unburdened our worries and care. Dick Cuvel1er was chosen second in command, And was ready to rule wlth his iron hand. David Pierce became our financier: He took charge of our money with great cheer. For notes of happenings we would call On our Secretary Betty Moll. In March we figured party time was here, And students joined us from far and near, Miss Elizabeth Smith, our Adviser, was always around To help us sophomores hold our ground. To guide us through Gerald McCarty was given the lead, With Peggy Bogue in second stead. After those followed Robert Perkins and Gerald Becker, Who were respectively Secretary and Treasurer. In eighth grade we had more serious work, With Mary Beneway as our clerk. To keep our money straight was Douglas Doyle, Who helped us end the year after strife and toil. During this year our motto, 'I'he success of tomorrow depends upon the preparation of today,n was selected, Then our class flower, the red rose, was detected. Bill Loftus as our leader and Lenora Luke, as elected next, Helped us choose our class colors, purple and gold, from the text. On entering high school, Miss Thape took us under her wing, Which started with a party where she let us have full swing With Douglas Doyle guiding our ship at a good rate, We selected Fern Wemes as second mate. To write the log we chose Leon Greene, And as Treasurer Peggy Bogue, as you have seen. In the table tennis anyone was allowed to compete. Jack Eaton won the high honor as champion, while Oakley Porray was close behind. The boys show enthusiastic interest in this sport. On the other hand, basketball also is a great sport, and the boys fight for the honor of winning very gamely and enjoy the game at the same time. The teams were arranged according to physical tests and were very evenly divided. Let's hope in the future that the boys will show as much interest as they have this year. We must thank Mr. Colburn for the noble and remarkable guidance in these sports. GIRLS' INTRAMURAL SPORTS . The girls started their sports campaign off with the intramural volleyball games this year as soccer was canceled due to various difficulties. The senior girls, led by Captain Betty Bailey, easily walked off with the volleyball crown, with no defeats. The junior girls, under Captain Evelyn DeGroot, finished second, and they were followed by the sophomores and freshmen. Next sport on the calendar was basketball. The four basketball teams were chosen according to the physical fitness index record. These games were close and hotly contested. The Eight Lessons was the tough luck team, losing the first four games by one point. The winner of basketball was the seven-Ups under their leader Antoinette Canting the Super Girls with Elizabeth De Dee at their head came in second, with the Eaglets and Eight Lessons tied for third place. The girls also show keen interest in ping pong, baseball, tennis, archery, and badminton. So the curtain falls on another year of girls' sports. Here ls hoping that 1941 and 1942 will be as successful. Congratulations to the winners and better luck' to the losers next time. Standing--Mr. Drews, Seated--Burnett, DeBaene, Cass, Cantin, M. The council was planned to act as a representative group to create a better union between teachers and students and to maintain a government of the students, by the students, and for the students. As president of the Senior Class, Donald DeBaene became the leader of the first Student Council. The other seven members were chosen by the students. Antoinette Cantin, acting as Secretary, and Herbert Gardner were the representatives from the senior class. Floyd Burnett, Vice- President of the Council, and Betty Cass were the members from the Junior Class. The sophomores chose Kenneth Covey, and the freshman, Douglas Doyle. Achiel Respalie was elected Councllman-at-Large. The faculty members of the organization were Principal William H. Drews, Miss Paulsen, and Miss McCreery. Two meetings were conducted this year. At these meetings, Mr. Drews explained the value and duties of the Council. This first effort toward a student government has proved to be worthy of recognition. In the future the Student Council will become a greater organization for the betterment of school life. I ASSEMBLIES This year the students have been taking a greater part in assemblies than they have in the past. Miss Lucille Smitn was again the adviser for the Assembly Committee. The student committee consisted of Margaret Mepham, Norma Collier, Bruce Pollock, William Loftus, Betty Bassage, and Donald Schimerhorn, with Margaret Mepham as chairman. Mr. Drews was the presiding officer. The first few assemblies were movies, one of which was put on by the School of Commerce. Later in the year the freshman citizenship class put on an Infomation P1ease program under the direction of Miss Paulsen. Miss McLymond's eighth grade presented a program called Town Hall. Miss Lucille Smith's seventh and eighth grade Girls' Glee Club also presented an assembly. Miss Elizabeth Smith's freshman English class streamlined Ivanhoe in a movie production. Our Easter program was a fashion parade put on by the Girls' Glee Club and the homemaking department. Lesta, a famous magician, visited our school representing the Rochester Business Institute. During Bill of Rights week we all enjoyed a movie on NThe Making of the Bill of R1ghts.n The Parents' Day assembly again proved to be an outstanding affair. Shirley Hart was selected as the Apple Blossom Queen. Mrs. Ransley gave an interesting talk about her early life in Kansas with the topic built around the theme Sunflowers and Tumbleweeds.
