ONTARIO AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE ONTARIO VETERINARY COLLEGE 'W Class '5 OUR years ago you entered the Ontario Agricultural College with widely varied individual experiences and backgrounds. The secondary school courses required for college entrance were one element which you had in common, With these credits you entered a new life which presented new situations to be met and new tasks to be achieved. lt also offered opportunities beyond the classroom which hitherto had not been within the range of your experience. You were actually opening a new account with debits and credits, an account which would remain open for four years. Now this account has been closed and you have a new balance sheet, you know your present worth, this is the foundation upon which you will build the balance of your career. The world offers great opportunities to those with a will to do and a determination to offer, under all circumstances, their best efforts. Past experience is, valuable as a guide. Changes are taking place so rapidly, in the scientihc, political, and social spheres, that decisions must be based upon knowledge gained from careful study in an earnest endeavour to learn the truth. Leaders in thought and action are necessary and are being sought today in all helds of activity. Your training at the College has provided a background for growth and development into the type of leadership required. Remember that, A'You cannot win today's game on yesterdays score. ONTARIO AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE 1 A Ll ONTARIO VETERINARY COLLEGE Q Class '50 HE graduation of Class 'SO from our various universities marks the end of an era, as it is the last class to graduate in the hrst half of the twentieth century. Ninety per cent of the members of Class 'SO at the Ontario Veterinary College are veterans of World War II, and as such brought a mature element into campus life. It is the largest group to go forth from the college since 1910, the year in which this institution was afhliated with the University of Toronto. As a group, you have consistently maintained high standards in your academic work. You have diligently performed the tasks which were set before you, and have enthusiastically participated in such extra-curricular activities as athletics, music, and dramatics. By fulfilling the requirements set forth in the undergraduate curriculum, you have completed your formal education. Your true education is just beginning. Whether you enter governmental service, private practice, or the field of scientific research, your future development will depend on the way you use the basic knowledge obtained at college and in proportion as you avail yourselves of the opportunities which present themselves, An open mind, willing to accept new viewpoints after careful consideration of the question at hand, will serve you in good stead. You are commencing your career as veterinarians equipped with agents and facts which were un- known a decade ago, and can render services which previously were not possible. Your mission will not be fulfilled merely if you become expert practitioners or brilliant research workers. It is not enough for a man to make a living. I-le must make a spiritual contribution to the com- munity in which he lives, as welll As Robert Louis Stevenson has said: There is no duty we so underrate as the duty of being happy. A well-adjusted personality stems from a knowledge of oneself, and from a capacity to live one's iife without worrying what other people think. Remember to be loyal to your Alma Mater. This institution has a greater interest in your welfare than has any other individual or group, aside and apart from members of your own family. Loyalty is .i great attribute and is a basis. of friendship and fellowship. Best wishes to each and every one of you. ' 5 M? lluyl '
