Basil Foor, with the help of Harold Hatcher, oper- ating a Tourist Camp just outside of Ottawa, Illinois. It seems that Basil has recently talked with Richard La- gassee, who is touring Illinois, playing concerts for Charity Balls. Basil learns from himthai:Marguerite Der- myer is doing this type of work in Gaylan. Harold is now going to his room to get a letter he has just received from Elwyn Merx. It seems that Elwyn has settled down to running a Standard Oil Bulk Station in Louisville, Ken- tucky. Working with him are Roger Smith andArthur Pence. Patricia Hawkins is their very efficient secretary. As the scene changes we see Marvin Vallad, as pro- prietor of a restaurant in Davenport, Iowa. Just coming into the restaurant are Olive May Derbyshireandlmcy May Fenicle who are relieved for a few hours of work attheir nursery for pre-school age children. Again the change of scene brings us to Chico, Cali- fornia, where we catch a glimpse of the hotel register, The name of Alberta Skinner and Evelyn Dowling appear. These girls, it seems, are on their way to Hollywood to apply for positions as gown designers for Paramount Stu- dios. They expect to get help from Carleene Tuthill, who is working as a model in one of the fine gown shops down there. Carleene has already told them.that Emily Wimple is doing very well at her work as an actress. As we look down on across street, whom should we see but Willard Pawson directing traffic. What's this! two people talky ing on a street corner. They seem to know Mr.2kMrs.'Jack Marr. It seems that Jack is employed by theDiamond Match Company. As we look back to a farm house near Angola, Indi- ana, we see Doris Warner,:atleast that was her name when she was graduated, very busy with her home work. A very prominent theater in Fort Wayne is featuring Marian Cum- mings and her band under the management of Betsy Outman. In Detroit, Michigan, Carl Winter is the head sur- geon in one of the hospitals. Harlan Woerner is pitching for the Detroit Tigers. 4' is ,WSW X. NNN X ' ff? I 1' if If29 N7 X . Dean has just heard from Elzie Black who joined the navy as soon as he was gradu- ated from High School. Now in New York Cityg Naomi Pickford and Ruth Pike are busy running a successful business--writing society columns for two of New York's daily papers. In the Congressional Library in Washington, D.C. we see Paul Gibbs looking up references for the debatelw is preparing. Back near Bowling Green, Ohio, Helen Baker is busy with her duties as Dean of Women, in one of their large Colleges. Ruth Wooden is Girls Physical Education In- structor at the school where Donald Seeger is teaching agriculture. We see a neon sign near ,Toledo, Ohio, bearing the inscription of Kent Forrister, Real Estate. Betty Steuwe is a long distance telephone operator near by. And new back to Onsted, we see Loraine Glancy,woHo- ing his fatherfs farm successfully. Alas! The vision grows dimmer and fades into the pastg and we see our classnates no longer. Much' to our surprise, we found that the world was not there to admire our brilliancy, and that the school still remained independently intact upon its mound. However, during that year, after a painful Freshmen initiation we were able to demonstratesomewhatourbril- liancy and cooperation in school activities. Moreover we had many enjoyable class parties under the supervis- ion of Mr. Huber, our class advisor. Then in our Sophomore year the school slowly began to realize that we were very much alive. We found our- selves being accepted for basketball, clubs, and various activities. One of the highlights of this Sophom re year was the vengence of last years sufferings. We were able to inflict the same painful experience on a new group of unfortunate green freshmen, as we had suffered theyear before. Mr. Hill led our class during this year. By autumn of 1940, we 56 Juniors, were able to as- sert ourselves as real upperclassmen by successfullypre- senting our play, nHere Comes Charlien, under the direc- tion of Miss Miller, our class sponsor. Some of our boys made the first team in basketball and baseball. In the spring we honored the Seniors atourannualJunior-'Senior banquet and with this our Junior year was drawn to a close. Finally we reached our Zenith of achievement -- the Senior year, where we made final preparation to go to make a world of our own. During that year we raised funds for our trip in the spring. Our efforts to do so centered first upon a play 'Mama's Baby Boyu, which was presented in the school and because of its success, it was again presented at tho Grange Hall in Tipton under the direction of Miss Filer. Thanks to the cooperation of many people in andnear Onstod, the custom of collecting papers and selling them was a success. This helped very much in raising neces- sary funds for our trip. Hugh Drake Reporter. . . . .Marcella Onsted JUNIOR PLAY The Junior Class of Onsted High School presented the three act comedy HLook Out Lizzien on March 27. The pkg was under the direction of Mrs. Sargent. Hazel Long, the only child of a backwoods Indiana farmer, tires of country life. She receives little sym- pathy from her parents, especially her father, who re- fuses to leave the old stone quarry. Hazel falls in love with Richard Biltmore, a stranger from the City. When the affair started the neighborhood gossip took a hand in things and as all gossips do, started a good deal of trouble. To impress Richard, Hazel has awkward Hank and stupid Lizzie serve as butler and maid, respectively.A When the daughter thinks that she sees Lizzie make a pass at the city stranger, the dynamite'starts1 When both the hired girl and her lover disappear, she is, of course, very downhearted. The countryside is in an uproar. If all comes to a happy conclusion. The play was a grand success and was enjoyed by everyone. CAST Silas Long . . . . . .Leonard Herrmann Sarah .... . It is composed of 68 members, 5 drum majorettes, and the manager, Gene Wil- liams. Last year 12 beginners were added. The band played at the county and state music fos- tivals, P. T. A. meetings, the Lenawee County Fair, and gave concerts during the summer. Just before school be- gan the band took their annual trip. This year it was to Detroit. When they get to Detroit they visited the W.W.J. Radio studio and newsrooms and from there to the Detroit News building where many interesting points were viewed. From the News building, the band took the Bob-Lo Boat to the Island of Bob-Lo. The trip was enjoyed by all mem- bers of the band. After returning to Detroit, the band retired to its suites at the Fort Shelby Hotel to enjoy a restful night which was fully appreciated after the ex- citement of the day. On the return trip home, the band stopped at theZoo at Royal Oak and spent several hours viewing the sights and animals . This winter the Drum Majorettes twirled in theState Drum Major's Contest at Lansing. Marcella Onsted was a finalist in the Senior Class. Mary Reynolds placed high in the Junior Class and Mardell Burton was placed inthe Juvenile Class. This coming summer the concerts will be given in 7 consecutive weeks after which they will disband untilthe opening of school this fall. -Plans for the trip this next summer have not as yet been made. We can say the Future Farmers have many objectives and purposes, but if we were to pick out one of the main objectives of the Onsted Chapter, it would be to develop competent, aggressive, rural and agricultural leadership. Our Onsted Chapter was organized October 18, l958. There are 51 Green Hands and Future Farmers year, and a large Freshman Class waiting to become of the organization next year. Highlights of the year were the County Judging test, trip to Farmers HeekznuiState F. F. A. Day at sing, and the initiation of Green Hands. The Club was organized in February'fmrthe purpose of improv- ing our school library. Committees under sponsorship of Mrs. Helen Sargent, wrote a constitution, conductedeiec- tions, and outlined duzwork of the club foriimisemester. Then formal organization took place, the officers being elected as follows: President. . . . . . Phyllis Tyler Vice President . . , , .Betty Burton Secretary M Treasurer. . . . .Peggy Morris Cleaning committees were appointed to clean books and shelves. Arranging committees arranged books on basis of the Dewey Decimal System. Mending committees reconditioned worn books.' The decoration committees planned two weeks displays. .Because the club has seen a vast improvement in the library to date, it hopes to continue in the enusing years, broadening its scope of activity and establishing a good much-needed library system in the school. 72 BOY SCOUTS The Onsted troop of Scouts has completed another year and at this time is going through the procedure of registering Some who were originally registered have withdrawn, others have come into the organization, and other are preparing their tests for registration so wecanlt tell the exact enrollment, at present. Besides the good times that the boys have had at their meetings they can list several civic and national services Beat they have performed during the year. Some of you readers al- ready know how diligently the boys dug into shingles that were laying around the I.0.0.F. hall and cleaned them up. Ask some of the boys about the trip to the football games at Ann Arbor and we are sure they'll tell you that they had a good time al- though they didn't have much ushering to do. Their project of aluminum collection was fairly successful and we hope that the material collected will be of some help, at least. The out- standing project has been the collection of paper. It requires lots of work but the cause is highly emphasized and it is our part, and yours, to cooperate in the Defense program. In a sum arized report of the Wolverine Council lLenawee and Monroe Countiesl recently received, we are delighted to find that our troop is in 5th place in tonnage collected. We have sold over 5 tons and we feel that you can be msproud as we are. We ex- pect to continue this project and solicit your support. .Among the other projects planned for the year are, cob lection of scrap metal Cproceeds to be donated to the Red Cross and U.S.O.J, First Aid training, training in signaling, summer camp for those who can go, ushering at Ann APUOI games, persmb al advancement and merit badge work. Our sponsorship has been changed from the P.T.A. to the Odd Fellows. Our local committee has been re-appointed and consists of John Iverson, chairman, Frank Johnson, L.R. Conner Richard Hill, and Max Johncox. Paul Harwood will again be Scoutmaster with Alvin Kimball Cwho was reappointed! Garrell Adler and Wayland Slayton as Assistant Scout masters. with this corp behind the boys we feel that we will be able to ac- complish more things in Cnsted than any troop in previous yeann We are proud of our boys and you should be too. They are willing to serve you and the community at large, will you help support them? BE PREPARED A GOOD SCOUT IS A GOOD CITIZEN. ,nn xp 'k. Later in the fall we started basketball with the Varsity well composed of seniors. BASKETBALL We got off to a peer start atiiw beginning of the year because we had lost seven players who graduated last spring. We lost the first five games but we im- proved after that and won six of the remaining twelve games. We placed fifth in the Little Six Standingsd Sand Creek won the championship this yearand St. Mary's came in second. We drew Blissfleld forthe first game in the tour- nament. We knew we didn't have much chance of beating them because they had a very good team this year. We were defeated 42 to 22 by a very fast passing team. ' Now that the basketball season is over, we are lookingfbrward to a successful baseball season because we have some good ball players backfrom last year, We should have aggmd chance of winning the baseball cham- pionship again this year.
