Bul allhough ils pasl has been rich and npleworlhy, il has a lulure, lor in realily il is a modern high school, parl ol lhe Syracuse public school syslem. There was a lime lhough, when boys and girls didn'l slream across lhe valley al eighl-lhirly in lhe morning and lrudge back al lwo-lhirly in lhe aller- noon. In lacl, lhe valley was once being consid- ered, very seriously, as lhe polenlial home ol whal was lhe Auburn Theological Seminary. A minor illness incapacilaled, lor a lime, lhe Rev. Derick Lansing, lirsl paslor ol lhe Valley Presbylerian Church, and when he recovered he resumed his pasloral dulies in Auburn where he founded lhe seminary lhal he had lormally inlended lo planl in lhe valley. Apparenlly lhe valley was ripe lor some kind ol educalional inslilulion, lor a group ol public- spiriled residenls ol Onondaga Hollow held a meeling on Augusl l5, I8l2, and a subscriplion paper was circulaled-ils obiecl lo raise lunds lo endow an academy. Applicalion was made lo lhe Board ol Regenls lor a charler which was granled lhe following April. The firsl board ol lruslees included lhe Rev. Caleb Alexander, Mr. Jasper Hopper and Mr. Joseph Forman. The Rev. Caleb Alexander lully inlended lo make a cenlral New York college oul ol lhe now lhriving Onondaga Valley Academy bul his plan failed. He was a lar-sighled educalional pion- eer. He has lhe dislinclion ol being lhe lirsl elecled presidenl ol Hamillon College in Clinlon, New York, bul declined lhe honor lo become lhe lirsl principal ol lhe Academy. ll was largely lhrough his inlluence lhal our school gol ils slarl. The lirsl building was ready lor use in lhe spring ol l8l5. The basemenl housed lhe kilchen, lhe panlry, and dining hall: on lhe second lloor was lhe chapel, lwo receplion rooms and lwo bed- rooms 'For lhe accommodalion ol lhe ianilor's lam- ily. Nine rooms lo be used by lhe sludenls con- lained sloves, lables, chairs, and beds. The lirsl sludenls paid lhe incredible sum ol SLIZM a week lor board. Laundry was exlra. Through lhe years lhe Academy has been lhe scene ol a number ol lires-some major, and olhers minor. Onondaga Valley's big lire occurred on Tuesday morning, April 8, l9I9. Headlines from an old clipping daled lhe day aller read- ONONDAGA VALLEY ACADEMY IS DE- STROYED BY FLAMES-HISTORIC LANDMARK BURNED TO GROUND SHORTLY BEFORE TIME FOR REGULAR MORNING SESSION-ORIGIN REMAINS A MYSTERY. This arlicle lurlher as- serls lhal lhe llames were discovered aboul len minules before lhe regular morning session. Aller lhe alarm was sounded, nearly one-hundred boys and girls marched lo salely. Al nine o'clock lhe slruclure was a roaring lurnace and all lhe near-by residenls ol lhe valley besides many hundreds ol speclalors lrom lhe cily were driven a hundred yards or more away by lhe inlense heal. Al nine- lhirly lhree floors ol lhe building caved in and lell inlo lhe cellar . . . Al len o'clock, eighly min- ules aller lhe lire was discovered, lhe building was m ruins . . . In I938 lhe Academy was once again lhe prey ol llames. Al lhis lime, lhe building was only par- lially damaged. Two rooms, lhe audilorium and gym, were com Ielely ruined. The aclual cause ol lhe lire is undblermined. Day aller day, year aller year, lhe school has sloodg each new class has seen many changes- new leachers, new lexl-books, new melhods, and new laces-bul always lhe same unchanging Valley spiril has remained.
