Why? Because the students of today are awakening to the fact that when they are graduated from high school, they have not iust finished a iob, or completed a task, but they are now prepared to meet the challenge that a groping world helplessly extends. This challenge is one that is urgent, one that must be fulfilled, this challenge is for security. Our generation, we cannot avoid it, is the one that will bring or the one that will take away this precious possession. The theme for the Academy of 1946 is security, because we feel that we, the graduating class of '46, are destined to shape the future. - THE EDITORS Joseph Cummings William Oswald Lawrence Skiddy Harold Smith THE DEDICATION The Class of 1946 proudly dedicates The Academy to the memory of each and every boy whose name appears on our Honor Roll. Serving their country in World War Il, they gave their very lives in order that our future might be secure. Although we Americans were saddened by the death of loved ones and did without many things to which we were accustomed, we were spared the destruction and starvation from which the people of Europe suffered. Therefore, we are in a position to help the people of Europe regain their former health and happiness. This year the boys and girls at Valley with the help of Miss O'Connor achieved a one hundred percent enrollment in the American Junior Red Cross. They also filled five gift boxes for the children overseas, and ten Christmas stockings for the men at Rhoads Hospital, Utica. They gave a contribution for a Christmas party for the children at City Hospital, and also tothe annual Red Cross fund. Miss Horle's art classes have helped, too, in another way. Under the guidance of Coach Stover, the Valley lndians managed to get in the fifth place. Throughout the season the boys won three games and lost nine in the city league. Valley victories were realized at the expense of North twice and Eastwood once. The teams who defeated the lndians were: Eastwood, Central, Vocational, C.B.A., and Nottingham. The latter defeated the lndians twice. The Valley team also participated in several non-league games which included one victory over Auburn in three attempts, and victories over Tully and Solvay. The prospects for the coming season are fairly bright since we will have many veteran players back again, among which are: Norm Jock, Jim Brann, Bob Horning, Ken Mooney and Bob Palmer. We also have some Junior Varsity players who are coming up fast, including Jack Coon, Pete Cost, Stanley Mickey Mouse Clark, Bob Price and Phil Plessas. The Junior Varsity did better in the last season than the varsity, having defeated South Presbyterian Church team in one out of two tries, North, C.B.A., and they also lost to Vocational and Eastwood, but won again with Auburn in two out of three attempts. Lack of practice hampered the Valley sextet from a perfect season. They have three wins and three defeats. First they encountered Rome, being beaten to a score of 7-'l. They then traveled to Clinton and lost a close game of 3-2. They clashed through 3 wins with Skaneateles, and then another setback by the Rorre sextet to the tune cf 7-0. The veterans were Lynch, Greene, MacDowell, Blandford, Eaum, Mietz and Fuller. The newcomers who bolstered the team were Shea, D. Price, Dalton, Kinney, Barr, Phipps, Longo, and Perkins. Warm weather hampered any further games. TENNIS S Yll' t 2 HE outlook for Valley's tennis team is bright as the Academy goes to press. A lfst of newcomers is not yet available but possible material under the able eye of Mr. Scofield, makes the line-up look like a winning team. The varsity xy ask: consisted of Baum, Taylor, Longo, Egan, Mooney, Shea, Loehr, Reilly, Bailey, 1145, Stone, and Esce. The boys were coached by Charles Stover, recently discharged from the Army. His assistant was Stanton Hudson. Valley won its first game of the season from Nottingham after a hard fought contest. lts second game, played with Central at Archbold Stadium, was Valley's only conference loss. At our next game Eastwood fell before our capable players. This game was the first one Mr. Stover had been able to attend and the next game, in which we handed Vocational their first defeat since 1944, was his first coaching opportunity. Our fifth game was easily won from C.B.A., although that team can always be counted on to spring an upset. In the last conference game we defeated North. Due to C.B.A.'s lucky upset of Central, we tied for top honors in the city league with Central. Our two post-season games were with Liverpool, whom we defeated, and Watertown, who handed us our second loss of the season. All in all we wish to congratulate our team for making this football year a great success for old O. V. A. BASEBALL OACH STOVER and Manager Moshanas report very favorably on the prospective fl baseball team. The team will play each of the other teams in the league 55 .-','f twice in a round robin. 'Q E are happy to welcome back to the faculty of Onondaga Valley Academy 2 , fl' three of our former teachers who entered the Armed Services of the United 14-.71 Tv States during the war and returned to us during this school year. Miss Mary Alice Giblin entered Officers' Training School at Smith College, Northamp- ton, Massachusetts, on June 2, 1943. At the end of a seven weeks' course, she received a commission as Ensign in the U. S. Navy Women's Reserve, and was stationed at the Norfolk Navy Yard in Portsmouth, Virginia, in August, 1943. Here she was engaged in personnel work until her discharge on May 2, 1944. She returned to our faculty as Mrs. Frank J. Cregg, Jr. Mr. Era Scofield entered the Army on July 17, 1941. He spent one year at Camp Lee, Virginia, in the Medical Department teaching illiterates, foreign-born soldiers, and those of low mental ability. Then he spent a year at Camp Pickett, Virginia, in similar work. Next he served as Administrative First Sergeant in charge of college students in the A. S. T. P. program in the School of Engineering of the University of Pittsburgh. The final period of service was spent in Puerto Rico in the Adiutant General's Dept. in pre-induction psychological testing and research. For commendable service in this work he was awarded the Army Commendation Ribbon. In addition he was awarded the American Defense Ribbon, the American Theatre Ribbon, the Good Conduct Ribbon, and World War II Service Ribbon. He was discharged at Camp Dix on November 21, 1945, and returned to the Valley soon after. Mr. Charles Stover entered the Army on August 5, 1943, being stationed at Camp Edwards, Massachusetts, for seven months. Here he was in an Anti-aircraft Battalion, where he studied radar operation. As an orientation non-com he was assigned to give weekly lectures on world affairs to his battalion. This assignment he continued throughout his Army service. From Massachusetts he went to Long Island for four weeks, to Camp Davis, North Carolina, for six months, and then to Camp Hahn, California. From there he left for the South Pacific in December, 1944, stopping in Hollandia, New Guinea, for a short time, and then going to Leyte Island in the Philippines. Here the battalion shifted from Ant.-aircraft to an MP battalion. In May, 1945, he was sent home to Walter Reed Hospital in Washington and from there to Ft. Oglethorpe for reassignment. He was discharged on October 1, 1945, and returned to his teaching and coaching duties two days later. Among his awards were the South Pacific, the American Theatre, the Philippine Liberation, and the Good Conduct ribbons. The Onondaga Valley Academy is fortunate in having these faculty members return. Happiness at their return is tinged with sadness as we remember one teacher who will never return-Joseph Minsavage. His influence is still felt in the Valley Academy, and the Supreme Sacrifice he made will not be forgotten. JUNIOR HIGH ASSEMBLIES , ' of Mrs. Harmon. Each year the Boy Scouts put on an assembly. This year the S' I' assembly honored Mr. Hartson for his twenty-eight years of scouting, and Norman Putman, a student of Valley, was awarded the honor medal with crossed palms for his brave deed of rescuing a young girl from a burning boat at De Ruyter Lake. This medal has been awarded only twice before in the thirty-five years of scouting. Other assemblies were given by the homeroom classes. Mrs. Ketcham's 9th grade homeroom put on a very successful Halloween assembly. Miss O'Connor's homeroom gave two very good Thanksgiving plays . The Social Science groups of Miss Armstrong and Mr. Menassian ioined together and gave an interesting Armistice Day assembly. Mrs. Dederer had charge of the Christmas assembly, which included the Senior Chorus. The Christmas Message given by Jack Wells, a former lieutenant in the Army and a graduate of Onondaga Valley. James Woodard sang two solos and led the group in the singing of other carols. One of our outstanding assemblies was given by the Junior High Indian pupils, who come from the nearby Onondaga Reservation. They were in native costume and sang songs in the Indian tongue. They also gave many ancient legends of the Iroquois. Among those who took part were Dorthy Maybie, who sang Indian Love Call, Doris Green, who sang By the Waters of Minnetonka, and Wendal Pierce, who acted as the Indian Chief to welcome Asa Danforth and his family to our lovely Valley of Onondaga. 3 UNIOR HIGH assembles have been very successful under the careful guidance My my gw6f ggZgWfiQ??L if 1 Q W + W Wfm W A ZWY g 1 f Q56 g X, , MW 9 N59 gx- A , W Ki-fQb'xe'V'YM mx E , ff, .
