Originality, Lungs Produce Novelty Rallies, Cheers Familiar sounds of B-E-A-T could be heard echo- ing through the halls every afternoon after 3:05, as the cheerleaders readied cheers and routines for pep rallies and games. The girls worked without an adviser until the second quarter, when Miss Frances johnson, mathe- matics teacher, took the advising duties. Originality was the trade mark of the strong- lunged girls, as they developed new routines and held several novelty pep rallies during the year. At the novelty pep assembly held before the first Norwich basketball encounter, the ball players and cheerleaders gave demonstrations of cheering from the caveman era to the rock 'n roll era. The par- ticipants did such a realistic job that students ask- ed for more assemblies of that kind. The cheerleaders sponsored several dances this year, including a Get Acquainted Dance, the an- nual Snow Queen Dance, and a Soc Hop. Lighted batons in a darkened armory, plus the varsity majorettes added up to top entertainment during half time at basketball games. Such songs as A Sweet Old Fashioned Girl and Bleacher Boogie provided accompaniment for many solos, group routines, and duets. Early in the school year, the varsity twirlers se- lected seven jayvees. Without an adviser, the major- ettes worked after school, striving hard to obtain perfection. I n November, they participated in the ceremon- ies connected with the laying of the cornerstones for Valleyview Street School and Fox Hospital.
