To list the many things for which we, the citizens of Our Town, would like to say thank you, would be impossible. You found your way into all our hearts, and we are more than sincere in saying that your wonder- ful friendship will remain dear in the memories of all of us. You'll never know how much it meant to the kids when you found it in your heart to make your time our time. Our many problems were shared and solved through your sympathetic understanding, and your wonderful philosophy of life. Your good taste and high standards of perfection have been an inspiration to all, and so it is with the utmost pride and affection that we dedicate this 1953 Oneidan to you . . . . our small way of saying thank you. Standing TOW BOARD The Board of Education wel- comed our new Superintendent, Mr. Willard Prior, this year. Ad- ministering the school system, the members of the Board carried on their endless work including routine matters of hiring new teachers and planning the school curriculum. One of the major problems facing the Board again this year was the centralization of all the school districts in the Oneida system, which will be decided upon in the near future. The Class of 1953 sincerely appreciates the fine cooperation and help of the Board in making this Senior year so memorable. We, the Class of 1953, first settled in our town in the fall of 1950. This was our Sophomore year, and it proved to be a very successful year, including our Trip on Broadway, the first big dance we sponsored in our career. Our next year proved to be even more active, and under john Perretta's second year of guidance, we were very successful in all the projects we undertook. Our Oriental Mood highlighted a year of enjoyable activity. The last year in our town will remain the most unforgettable in the minds of all of us, and as we look back over the year, we are justly proud of our many accom- plishments. We ask you, our fellow citizens, as you turn the following pages, to share with us the memories of the years we have spent in Our Town. 1- A P MSTOS 13 L c .g u . .N . ,, -2 -A C ASS OF I953 'Q J' we Q vi .Q 1 i it QW- 5 , 'I -',i f ,L'-1-, .' CLASS OF I954 September found us up and coming citizens, ready to take an active Part in the affairs of Our Town. Clubs, sports, and the ever present class work were just a few of the functions that have benefited by our class participation. Every class has its special financial difficulties, and ours proved to be no exception, as junior Prom expenses confronted us. Suggestions for various proj- ects, which were offered by our newly organized Ways and Means Committee, proved to be a profitable solution to our problem. Paving the way to success were the Christmas Dance, the hilarious junior Basketball Game between the girls and boys, a bake sale, and the Basketball Dance which closed the season. Now, june finds us anticipating the greater responsibilities we must assume as Senior citizens. 35 C ASS OF I955 In the autumn of '52, when we moved into Our Town and took up our residence as its newest citizens, we had much to learn from our friends and neighbors who had resided here before us. Showing our ability and interest in the various town activities, we soon became a recognized part of many prominent civic organiza- tions. Anticipating the expenses of our Spring Dance, we engaged in an ambitious project of selling campus jackets in the traditional orange and blue. Our large and energetic Scholarship Club holds promise of brilliant scholastic records for the Class of '55. The end of our first year finds us loyal and enthusiastic citizens of our thriving school community. First Row, L. to R.: Behr, Kilroy, Trapasso, Brown, Arnold, Happle, Lucas, Graham, Kolm, Brophy. The club also undertook a new project during the last school semester. It issued school news and activities for a High School page in the Oneida Daily Dispatch. Barbara Lomery, Kitty Carney, and Gail Peebles were selected as delegates from the Editorial Staff to accompany their advisor, Miss Madeline Raite, to the Empire State School Press Association which was held at Onondoga Hotel in the fall. To conclude a year of club activity, a banquet was held in june at which time awards were presented to the l953 staff members and secretarial group. The outgoing Editor was presented with a gold trophy, and the new staff was announced. The group owes much of its successful achievements to its advisor who contributed a great deal of her time to the benefit of the town paper publications. nrpna l Seated, L. to R.: Garofalo, DuBois, G. The chorus made its Christmas and Spring Concerts the most im- pressive productions in its history. Enthusiastic choristers journeyed to the County Festival in Morrisville and to the State Festival in Rome to display their talents. It was with regret that they said good-bye to Miss Doris Sands at the end of the first term, but they were fortunate to welcome Miss Evelyn Fowler as her successor. 48 The Boys' Trio, trained by Miss Doris Sands, have entertained a many school functions and have been in demand by local organization: The rich bass background of Bill DeVries with the mellow baritone r Neils Poulsen and the tenor voice of john LaMotbe combine to produc an exceptionally fine blend of male voices. GIRL NSEMBLE Various songs filled the air every ednesday afternoon in Room 18, here the blending voices of the irls' Ensemble could be heard re- earsing for the year-'s program. lost of these girls added their armony to the Chorus as well as ntertaining social groups outside 1e school. Sweet voices ranging from high opranos to deep altos sang cheer- xlly throughout the first term under iss Doris Sand's direction, and the :cond term, under the direction of iss Evelyn Fowler. O MATH Lus Unkr the guidance of Miss Frances Burns, the Math Club V l has spent a very interesting year learning about different V. I , r phases of mathematics. The group spent a great deal of the first semester working on geometrical ornaments for a surprise Christmas tree To deviate from the practical projects, the club made a Geometry film strip. This is a club to watch in the Q QL Q future ART CLUB The Art Club, one of our new addi- tions this year, has accomplished much in the field of sculpture. TRI-VALLEY LEAGUE CHAMPIONS The residents of Our Town can be proud of their football squad which performed for us last fall. They played their way into the Tri-Valley Championship, after being undefeated in every league game. One of the greatest contributions to this year's team was the fast moving T-fox-mr tion that was introduced by head coach, Ray Agudo, and a greatl welcomed newcomer to the Oneida faculty, Chuck Patricia. Sparked by the brilliant running plays of Carl Phillips and Pete Perkins, and the blocking and deception by the linemen and baclrfield, the team displayed the best brand of football that 0.1-LS. has seen in many a season. john Peretta, Jerry Friske Co-Captains XX ff 4 ff H, A, XX L. to R.: Coach Agudo, Manager Dave Brown, Coach Patricia. In- cluded in these were double defeats over Cazenovia, Rome, Chittenango, and Waterville. This record enabled the O.H.S. Redskins to clinch second place for the sec- ond year in a row. Next year, the Orange and Blue will be without the able assistance of Harry Zophy, Paul Tanner, Dick De- veans, Bill DeVries, Bill Przybycien, Bud Haenlin, Ronald Durkee, and Marty Angelino who were Seniors. But Coach Duncan can look forward to a victorious '54 season with Terry Quain, Bob Corona, and John Clements returning. Right Fareground: Coach Duncan. The JV Football team had a very victorious season under the observant eyes Ju of james Gleason and William Fariel, who are newcomers to the Oneida faculty this year. Most of the squad was made up of new players, but there were a few veterans from last year's team to help out when the going was tough. The team won six out of six straight games, and then decided to tackle the V.V.S. Varsity, excluding only Seniors. They did a magnificent job, losing by only five points. JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL The IV Basketball squad, under the coaching of Ray Agudo, came through in fine fashion after a shaky start. Because of inerperience, they lost four of their first six games, but with this valuable experience gained, they won eight of the next nine. The team established a new high of 85 points for both JV and Varsity competition against Waterville. Kneeling, L. to R.: Flanagan, Amold, Miller.
